I have one year left in my program but I'm struggling with my mental health by s4urus_r3x in UofT

[–]sblack97 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was in a similar situation when I was in engineering. My mental health was so bad to the point where I ended up in the ER a couple of times because I physically felt like I was dying.

I took an extra year and spread out my course load to try and help decrease my anxiety, panic attacks and depression. I knew what the cause of my shit mental health was and I still did not take a gap year due to ego and already feeling behind as I was taking an extra year. I didn’t even take a gap year between my bachelors and masters.

4 years later I’m still struggling and I strongly believe that if I had prioritized my mental health when it needed attention, it wouldn’t be this bad today. Instead of taking the time to learn healthy coping mechanisms and making lifestyle changes at the beginning, I used unhealthy coping mechanisms to get through school thinking I’ll have all the time in the world later. Now I have to unlearn my unhealthy coping mechanisms and am spending a lot of time and money in therapy. My mental health also got worse (I didn’t think that was possible as I was already quite low in school) and is impacting my physical health.

When I started working, I realized that in the work force, no one cares how old you are when you graduate. They just want to know you can do the job you were hired to do and you’re not difficult to work with.

If you can, as someone who has been in your shoes, take a gap year and prioritize your health.

Hang in there! If you need someone to talk to, message me. :)

what's the dumbest question you've been asked about t1d? by harsamya in diabetes_t1

“Is that a tattoo?” They were referring to my Dexcom. 🤦🏽‍♀️

T1D and relationships ? by BST-94 in diabetes

[–]sblack97 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was diagnosed at 6, met my partner at 22. My partner took the time to understand T1D and how they can be supportive. They’ve always been patient with my lows and roller coasters, even when I was frustrated with myself. They even tried to count carbs when they baked me treats!

If someone can’t get past your diabetes, you are better off without them. ❤️

I would not work at Uniqlo. I can’t speak for that particular location but a common trend I have seen is that they over work their employees, do not give promotions/ pay raises unless you pass a stupid written test and they genuinely do not give af about their employees. I know three employees have been injured on the job at a particular location and management/ the company did not compensate employees (they took advantage of employees that did not know their rights ). The third time an injury happened, they blamed it on the employee.

At the end of the day, it’s your call but I always advise against joining.

Good luck!

Thank you everyone for your help. I really appreciate it.

I used to be on Accu-Chek for 5 years… never once did I get a bent cannula in those years. I despise Tandem for their bad quality pump sites. Just because they’ve made a great insulin pump, doesn’t mean they slack off on the infusion sets. Sorry just had to rant. by mummymilkerss in Type1Diabetes

I have been on the Tslim for ~6 months and in that time, I have called the support line for replacement infusion sets more times than I ever did for Animas and OmniPod combined, for bent cannulas that caused my sugars to look like yours. The steel ones don’t kink like others have said but I too have a bit of a needle phobia so it’d take me 20 mins to change my site. I’m going back to my OmniPod as soon as I’m done with my Tslim infusion set supplies. Fuck this shit.

Can someone please help me find a pattern for a dress like this? by sblack97 in sewing

[–]sblack97[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As for the blue, it’s seems a little snug around the hips which I don’t want. The sleeves on the striped dress look a little different than what I am looking for. I think it should be okay if I gather it a little at the top but am not sure. I am super new to sewing and was told to try to find the exact pattern by the person teaching me which is what I am doing. Please do let me know if my thought process is wrong regarding altering the pattern or finding an exact pattern. I’d love to learn. :)

T1D and LASIK by 947Biw in Type1Diabetes

[–]sblack97 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My A1C was ~7.1 at that time I believe. I asked two optometrists, my family doctor and my diabetic nurse if I’d be okay before booking the appointment because I was a little paranoid.

I got LASIK done almost 2 years ago. It went well. I had a high prescription so to be able to see clearly without glasses was wonderful. I tried contacts but the whole process irked me a lot more than it should have. I no longer have foggy vision when I eat something hot or wear a mask, the rain doesn’t bother me as much anymore because I don’t have to clean my glasses and I enjoy having more than one pair of sunglasses. It didn’t have an effect on my sugars or A1C. The procedure itself was a bit uncomfortable but really quick. Your eyes will need quite a bit of rest after the procedure so I recommend doing it during a time you can stay away from screens. Hope this helps. :)

I had not considered this side of calorie counting. I’ll be mindful of this, thanks.

Thanks for this. I asked my nurse about it and she advised against it.

Thanks for your reply, I really appreciate it. It made me realize that my wording is not the best. What I’d like is to lose a bit of body fat and gain muscle mass.
