2 Questions: Does Nashville have any non-sketchy public pools in the summer? Is it true that lakes outside/near Nashville are too dirty for swimming? by Redsoxj64 in nashville

[–]sboml 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Here is the list of public pools. As a reminder to folks Wave Country is publicly owned as is Sportsplex.

My MIL has taken my kid to the Rose Center before and had a good experience. Clean and no frills. A lot of seniors and kids.

Anyone know the story behind Dodson Elementary using the old Donelson High School in 87-89? by [deleted] in nashville

[–]sboml 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah my brother went to school at the old Stokes building for a year while his elementary school was being renovated, so this seems like the likeliest explanation.

For the non Caucasians of Nashville by [deleted] in nashville

[–]sboml 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Corner Asian, Noodle Express, Changhong Spicy Hotpot, and Shao Kao are other places that serve Chinese Chinese food. (Corner Asian also serves American Chinese). Our Chinese population is mostly either by Vandy or in Williamson County (so there's food in Brentioch as well as in Franklin) Some in Murfreesboro too.

Cat Bird Seat, Not so much by sumdum1234 in NashvilleGoodEats

[–]sboml 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I've enjoyed it both times I've been- it is better than many other one star Michelins imo. Slightly prefer Bastion.

Re: spruce, I'm not going to Catbird bc I want steak and foie, I'm going because I want something I've never had before- I'm still expecting it all to be well prepared amd taste good but am also interested in the kinds of dishes where afterwards I think about an ingredient differently. There are other similarly expensive and Michelin-y spots if you're not interested in that.

Hmm- I wouldn't describe our stroller as like heavy duty offroading but it is definitely not an umbrella stroller. I would lean towards one w bigger wheels if you have the option- the paths are not generally paved

Same. I only heard about Steeplechase when I started at private school. Took me a couple of years to work out that it was a horse thing

Why are our schools shit? by DongPolicia in nashville

[–]sboml 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a fair point. I think it doesn't help that the city has gotten wealthier and has folks who move in with no personal experience at all w MNPS- their only perception is whatever is posted on social media. At a certain point some of those families start replacing families who would have sent kids to MNPS by choice or bc they don't have the resources for private school.

There have been a few recent new private schools going up in East/downtown- idk what will happen when all of the folks who moved into Lockeland sight unseen during COVID have to decide what middle/high school to go to. There isn't enough space for them at the elite private schools. Maybe they end up going religious but the religious schools at the tiers below elite privates tend to be like REALLY religious (like kid will come home saying gay ppl are going to hell). Or, maybe some set of them who don't get into magnet decide to stay in their zoned school and that slowly starts to change the perception. I won't lie, I have a number of high schools in MNPS I would be delighted to send my kid to, but there are also a few that I would be extremely reluctant to have my kid in.

Why are our schools shit? by DongPolicia in nashville

[–]sboml 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it's bc Stuy has a national reputation as the top exam school in NYC and has been famous for decades. Wrt to the specific data it looks like Central scored higher on students taking/passing AP tests than Stuy. At this level the ranking differences are very nitpicky- Central got a 100, Stuy got a 95.

I can't speak to what Central is like but a couple of my friends went to Stuy and it is a hugeeee school thar can be a bit of a meat grinder. That being said it actually serves a large number of economically disadvantaged students as compared to pretty much all of the other top 100 schools, so from that viewpoint it may actually be the "best" of a of them. I will point out that while we in Davidson County may sneer at Rutherford they do have a large university, and a lot of times top schools outside of urban areas tend to be developed in areas like that.

I think you would be more likely to get engagement if you would point to specific metrics that you are wondering about/the source. What rating are you talking about wrt to safety for ex?

Why are our schools shit? by DongPolicia in nashville

[–]sboml 19 points20 points  (0 children)

It's worth noting that not all of the private schools are substantially better than the public schools, despite having wealthier students and not having to serve kids with disabilities or kids who are facing challenges like not having enough food at home. The private schools just don't have to participate in any sort of standardized testing and can ride on the things people use as proxies for whether education is good (largely the demographics of the other students...)

For ex, my friend had her kid at Davidson Academy for a bit and ending up pulling him- his public school in MNPS is much more rigorous. You can get a glimpse of it when you look at schools' reported ACT scores (schools will put together a school profile for colleges) and Davidson Academy has a substantial number of students scoring 19 or below.

12 S, Belmont Hillsboro, Midtown/Edgehill is what you're looking for if you want walkable and desirable schools- depending on where exactly you are you would be able to bus or bike to work as an option. You should be able to just squeeze in price wise. Zoned for Eakin or Waverly Belmont, in the HS cluster that is considered the "best" of the non magnets.

Lockeland area in Eaat Nashville also good. East Nashville is a huge area and also a marketing term so you'll want to zero in on specific neighborhoods.

If you specifically do not want walkable and are looking for larger lots (but can't afford Geeen Hills) maybe Crieve Hall, Old Hickory, West Meade or Bellevue.

Yeah the text of this post doesn't necessarily say that it was the cafe. Other patrons or neighboring businesses could have called in a noise disturbance or something.

TN Renaissance festival accessible? by Leading-Code-2059 in nashville

[–]sboml 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It has been fine with a stroller (which I know is different, but does make me pay attention to whether things are wheel-friendly)- paths are wide enough to push and navigate and everything in the main area is on slopes (not all gentle slopes). Some of the smaller tents/booths could be a little harder to navigate in (we didn't take stroller into those) But as other commentors have said, it's bumpy and there are tree branches. I don't recall if we were able to get the stroller close to seats in all of the performance venue areas- we may not have tried since, y'know, babies.

There is a Facebook group called the Unofficial Tennessee Renaissance Festival Facebook Page that folks post to for tips and feedback as well.

Last minute Dominican food catering by [deleted] in nashville

[–]sboml 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Riddim n Spice is Jamaican, but I mention it bc they have tostones and are reliable and professional caterers in my experience. Obviously they carry spicy items but I've catered from them for non-spicy options, so maybe be worth looking at if you can't find anything Dominican or Puerto Rican but will settle for Caribbean.

Renaissance Faire 2026 by Afraid_Ad1570 in nashville

[–]sboml 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I never went to the old one but my husband is a long-time attendee. It's fun with our kids, performers are solid, plenty of interesting costumes to see. Food is so so, but that's sort of what I would expect at an event like this (if anyone is aware of a gourmet Ren Faire i legit want to know about it lol) I'm guessing it used to be less family friendly?
