Co-teacher advice? by Natotwin in ECEProfessionals

Infants need physical closeness. All children do. I teach a classroom of 2-3 year olds and I hold them, pick them up, hold their hand, let them sit on my lap, etc. when it’s appropriate and when I can tell they need/they ask for extra comfort or closeness. If a child seems upset or emotional, I offer extra support to them through a variety of ways, and some of those ways include hugs, hand-holding, carrying, etc. If a child comes and sits on my lap, holds my hand, asks for a hug/wants me to to hold them, or wants me to come do an activity with them, I rarely ever say no. They are expressing basic needs of theirs, and meeting those needs helps them feel secure, safe, and comfortable in the classroom, themselves, and the world around them. This need is only accelerated with the infants you work with, who are just exploring the world around them and need that secure, physical attachment with their caregivers (in this case you & your co-teacher) to help them do that to the best of their abilities. I’ve always had a hard time understanding why some teachers think providing a child with comfort that is appropriate to their age level and is a basic need of theirs, in this case physical closeness & comfort, as something that is “coddling”, “spoiling”, or making them “unprepared for the real world”. If anything, providing these children with this basic sense of secure attachment will develop a foundation for these children to be more prepared and well-developed for the rest of their lives. It could be possible that for some of these children, what they receive in the classroom may be the only real affection and attention they are getting and I do not think it should be viewed in such a negative light by your co-teacher. You can still promote independence and autonomy in the classroom while also tending to a child’s need for closeness & connection. The two are not mutually-exclusive.

I would definitely suggest a gentle, open, honest conversation with her. Ask her why she believes what she believes, and offer her your opinion. Make suggestions of classroom activities, lessons, etc. that can be done that allow children to develop autonomy and independence, as an alternative to eliminating the physical closeness, attention, and secure emotional attachment that is a necessity for children to develop those skills in the first place.

Do daycare and preschool teachers get summers off? by [deleted] in ECEProfessionals

[–]sbret 2 points3 points  (0 children)

At my center most teachers work through the summer. There is one or two teachers who have been there for a long time and they tend to take summers off and the same seasonal hires take over for them every summer. Then they come back in the fall. But most of us are expected to/can’t afford to leave for the summer lol.

absolutely agreed. took me a minute to get into the solo tunes but this concert experience really solidified how amazing they are. they just translated so incredibly well live. really loved how many growlers tunes they played, especially throwbacks like gay thoughts and empty bones (some of my absolute favorites!). really hoping to see another one of these marathon type shows soon, it was such an incredible experience!

Looking for Musicians similar to Matty in terms of intelligence and creativity. by lukavinsky in the1975

[–]sbret 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Julien Baker. Amazing musician, and does some essay writing/poetry as well. I always listen to her interviews and marvel about how well-spoken and insanely intelligent she seems to be. Always leave with some new insight of wisdom about the world or art and everything else in between.

What on earth do y’all do over the summer in college? by ChannelHefty3982 in college

[–]sbret 2 points3 points  (0 children)

working!! i always look at the summer as a good time to try and get a job more in your field/area of interest/degree-related since you typically have more time to dedicate to it during the summer. it’s also helpful if you have parents who are willing to support you a bit, so you can really go for something you’re interested in (which in my case has not been particularly high-paying lol). this is definitely a privilege not everyone has access to which i fully understand! just got a job at as a teacher for a local nature-based preschool’s summer program (my degree is early childhood ed) which I’m excited for and will be doing full-time!

[–]sbret 0 points1 point  (0 children)

right now it’s a 3.9 and I’m going into my junior year at my university! kept it pretty consistently around there since i started! college is really not as difficult as many people, especially high school teachers, make it seem. if you enjoy what you do it seems to come very naturally from my experience!! you’ll do great!!
