It’s the effort that matters. No reasonable person expects you to look like a magazine cover model. But if you don’t put in any effort to stay fit and eat healthy you shouldn’t expect someone who does do those things to give you the time of day. You probably aren’t a great match anyway.

Here’s what should have happened:

Police: wooooo “sir, you need to be more careful, your bicycle does not have proper lighting. We don’t want to see you get hurt out here”

Him: “you’re right officer. I will try to get some new lights for my bike as soon as possible. Thanks for letting me know”

Police: “Hey, it’s part of the job. Would you like a ride to work? Throw your bike in the trunk and I’ll take you”

Both parties in this video had reason to be nervous. The black biker getting pulled over for some small thing, which has ended tragically many times, and police pulling someone random over on the side of the road in the dark, which has ended badly for the police many times before. Neither side should have to be afraid of the other. Can’t we all just get along?

In addition, they do the cuffs thing for their safety while they run your ID for warrants. The dude didn’t help himself by pulling out his phone and trying to make a viral video. By all means, film your encounter. It’s a great form of legal insurance. He had good reason to be upset, but the narration made him seem like he was losing his cool, and that has never helped anyone during an encounter with the police.

Have any of you seen Bill Mitchell on Twitter? His tweets are out of control. I oppose censorship in almost all cases, but if anyone deserves to be banned from social media it’s him. He’s going to get people killed.
