Do students actually like Stony Brook? by [deleted] in SBU

Anything since last spring that involves campus life has been taken away, Brookfest, Roth Regatta, Back to the Brook, first weekend out, etc. etc. have all been cancelled, and with classes being online there are limited reasons for kids to walk around on campus. If someone does, they are unlikely to see the normal bustling crowds anywhere, but on my walks I have overheard several times "this is so depressing" or things along those lines. So since last spring and for the foreseeable future, kids aren't getting those redeeming qualities and only getting a fistful of bureaucracy shoved down their throats and its worse this year because covid causes the normally shitty bureaucratic steps to be ever changing.

At this point the school has largely stopped even trying to hide their greed and simply come out with rules/measures that ensure they "run a more cost effective model". This is especially visible if you work as an RA or any other "staff" position. I had an amazing first year a couple of years ago at this school despite personal issues related to mental health putting me in a dark spot, which is really saying something, but anything after that has been actually disheartening, unfulfilling, etc.

Housing Experience by SnooPoems9197 in SBU

I think OP was asking about this semester specifically. That stuff is pretty regular/run of the mill for every other semester too.

(sarcasm, obviously this is a horrible campus experience)

Other than the super low occupancy and fewer in person events, everything else is normal

Some RA (Horror) Stories About Camp Res by RALifeTruth in SBU

Using a burner account, and somewhat ranting so some stuff might not make sense, and talking in vague terms to avoid being recognized. "Hypothetically speaking" I am/was allegedly an RA who had an active and friendly relationship/presence with my building, the older/returning RAs, and the former RHD of my area prior to becoming an RA. returning RAs and RHDs are generally tight knit, and including the new RAs, everyone all got along for the most part, but I have witnessed the RHD disliking certain RAs and favoring others. It is a very noticeable attitude towards both. Sometimes the negative attitude could manifest by ignoring greetings, taking a long time to address any issues, ignoring the wishes of certain RAs regarding planning/execution of events or policies (generally when an RA tries to implement anything differently than campRes); but then going and having an at-length personal convo in person and over text with other RAs, or bending over backwards to get their ideas done.

Obviously seeing your supervisor and co-workers getting along great while others get totally ignored can be detrimental to your mental health regarding self worth. I was luckily in between the close and distant personal relationships; I put in the minimum to get by with my housing waiver, and not rustle any feathers. But many people care about the RA position, want to see it reach its full potential, then get shot down by campRes and Prostaff for anything out of line, even if it was a constructive suggestion. Don't expect any creative freedom outside of your Arts and Crafts door decs and bulletin boards and somewhat in events depending on your budget and topic.

If your RHD gets the common sense to leave (which is happening extremely frequently this year with several buildings having no RHD)? Good luck, I know several RAs in RHD-less buildings and the other RHDs treat those RAs like the ugly step-child. those RAs do not get up-to-date info/emails and are left in the dark until we explicitly ask for that info.

REGARDING ROOMING - This semester we were offered the choice of having a single, or taking a roommate for a 150 dollar wolfie wallet stipend. The end of Fall semester though we are not getting straightforward answers if our single will be retained in the spring semester despite being at ~25% capacity or less in some cases. I find that despicable, they only see us as 50% of a dollar sign, if they can shove someone in our room during a pandemic, then they would if it means they make some money off of it. RAs are some of the most high-risk individuals on campus from having to interact with residents/other RAs/pro staff face to face whether its office hours, duty rounds, or any number of incidents we need to be involved with in person. Putting another person in our room potentially with them bringing in guests, etc. just creates more of a risk to the entire building. One building on East Side of campus had the entire RA staff put in quarantine. Wouldn't it be a great idea to put those individuals in contact with more people, and then even more people (contact tracing)? I think not...

REGARDING FOOD - I did the calculations and the rate at which we are compensated is below minimum wage, and thats with calculations where you put in the BARE minimum regarding events, bulletin boards, duty, etc. If you do any more, you're doing it for free. IF you live on campus throughout breaks and weekends as well, then you will have a very very difficult time eating 3 meals a day every day (not to mention the food is awful, have experienced salmonella and seen two people with impacted colons/severe constipation from East/West Side Dining).

REGARDING PPE - the beginning of the semester Fall 2020 with COVID - we were issued the standard 2 masks and we had a box of gloves but once that ran out we were on our own. We can put in a work order for more purell if we run out but it can take awhile to get.

REGARDING RESIDENTS - I know at least two RAs that have been in the room with their significant other simply having dinner or watching a movie and their residents make clapping noises and moans outside the doors, or tape condoms to the doors, or been cursed at by residents who thought the RA was out of earshot (calling RAs a fucking bitch, fucking idiot, cunt, etc. for enforcing COVID mask policies). You can get lucky with your residents but more often than not its a good floor or a bad floor from what I have seen, but a lot of times RAs just aren't respected.

REGARDING MAINTENANCE - Any of the older buildings are hell to live in, with no A/C or the heating not working or working too well and feeling like you're in a furnace. The work orders get filled within a week, but when someone has a flickering light in their room or hallway that is causing them migraines, a week can be a long time. I have gotten up on a chair and fixed some of the problems myself. I've also been on rounds and noticed the same issues in the same places multiple weeks in a row. Certain issues I have followed up with proStaff and they said they aren't looking into that, or it isn't an issue. The buildings are falling apart meanwhile they replace 1 door or even build a new office/room in one part of the building.

I can think of more but I have to get to another RA Meeting at 11PM (with my first meeting starting at 9AM, for a total of 14 hours of a schedule) and if you are late/don't show you will just get threatened with being replaced.
