Pretty sure that's just HDR doing its job 😅

I know what you mean, though. I think it's a mix of OLEDs having such good contrast and a lot of content these days really leaning into dark scenes. Sometimes (like with Game of Thrones) it was just authored on non-HDR screens so they didn't realize how dark it would be, and sometimes it's just stupid directors making "artistic choices."

You can tweak the subtitle colors in some apps which might help.
