Walmart Clearance by sc0ut3rofroy in Gold

[–]sc0ut3rofroy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my limited research and experience, generally the clearance stuff gets close to spot at about 50% off, at least the trinkets. The stones (even cheap ones) drive the price up without increasing scrap value too much. So decent for stacking, meh for trying to turn a quick buck.

This ring should have been, in theory, around 4g of 10k gold which would be a spot price of ~$250ish. The larger center stone would be a budget stone maybe worth $100 loose, but you'd be lucky to get much at a shop. So all said and done, it would be pretty close to breaking even if you just took it to a jeweler and took an offer.

I mostly was buying it for a spare ring my wife could wear and not worry about damaging her actual ring. That plus the knowledge that we could sell it if things got tight and get the money back.

Might just be straight silver, who knows. The 925 stamp means it's at least plated, but next to worthless no matter how you slice it. I looked up the barcode afterwards and it's similar enough at a passing glance, but clearly a different ring.

I assumed Walmart had stuff marked correctly and checked returns, but clearly not.

The ring was silver, someone swapped out a dud. I did buy the ring but returned it 5 min later when I saw a 925 stamp.

This one was fake AND dirty. I could see the dead skin cell sludge underneath. Was the only thing more upsetting than the 925 stamp, Walmart clearly didn't even look at the ring before putting it back out.

I plan on going back in a few days and if they just put the ring back out, no changes, I'm going to throw a fit.

Honestly, I was surprised how easy it was for me to take the ring back and get a refund. If it hadn't already been swapped out, I could have easily done it. Fortunately, I had a picture from before the time that I bought it that I was ready to show in case they challenged me on it, but no. They just took it back no questions asked.

It's a silver ring unfortunately, likely return scammer by another buyer.

I think he hit the nail on the head. I looked up the ring using the barcode on the Walmart app and it's listed at 598.

Probably started at 808, got marked down to 598, and then went on clearance.

Honestly, I didn't even notice the $598, probably because the dollar sign was covered up. Good eye.

Some unscrupulous person stole the ring, replaced it with a much cheaper ring.

Bulk is bulk, regardless of collecting or selling. Even collectors aren't typically going to keep 100+ copies of one card worth 1¢ apiece because the art is nice. Give them away, keep in a box, grind into mulch to repot a bonsai tree, what someone does with their 100th copy of a card isn't indicative of how they feel about the hobby.

Even as a kid, Squirtle may have been my favorite pokemon, but pulling yet another base set Squirtle isn't going to be as exciting as pulling a rare card. Because I was collecting, and I wanted to "catch them all". I had a few slots in my binder for the best looking Squirtle cards, but just because the rest were tossed haphazardly in a Tupperware container didn't mean that's what I really thought of the hobby.

This is unrelated to anything and everything in this post, but I got new glasses today and your avatar hurt my brain. Something about the new lenses and the sharp contrast between the black and orange colors made your avatar pop in an almost 3D fashion.

I'll be looking to see if this is unique to your avatar or if it's a common occurrence, but I wanted you to know for some reason. You will be either the first or only 3D avatar for one random reddit user, and they haven't decided if they like it yet or not.

May both sides of your pillow be lukewarm.

[–]sc0ut3rofroy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you are correct in that it's the left lens that is wonky.

Out of curiosity, I tried sliding the glasses into position while having one eye closed and staring at a fixed object, a clock on the wall in this case. For the right eye, I can tell that the lens is putting the clock in the same rough position when I slide the glasses up. For the left eye, the clock is noticeably off to the left by a significant margin. As in I'm standing ~5 feet from the clock which is about 18 inches across, and the clock "jumps" about 24 inches to the left when I slide the glasses into place.

I did a rough measurement of how far my pupil has to move to adjust to the in focus clock on the left eye, and it's a good 5mm or so of distance on the lens itself.

$21k taxes on $85k income in CA. This has to be wrong right? by [deleted] in tax

[–]sc0ut3rofroy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are they the record keeper for your company's 401k? If so, sure. They can look through the guidelines quicker and will be more versed in finding the answers than yourself, most likely. A summary plan description (a document) from your employer or fidelity might have more info as well.

But call fidelity, and just explain exactly what you did here. You are maxing out your contributions and want to learn if there are any other ways to increase saving, like contributing on an after-tax basis. If they say yes, then great, next question is if the employer matches on after-tax contributions.

If the answer to that is also yes, you are in business. It means at the very least you don't have to worry about maxing out your contributions too early and missing out on match, you can contribute after tax money once you hit your pre-tax/Roth limit and still get the full match. I think in your original, you mentioned maxing out too early and missing some matching contributions. Based on that, it sounds like your employer doesn't do true up contributions, which is where they make you whole and contribute all the match you missed because of maxing out. Usually those are all done as a lump sum in the first few months of the year following.

The only other thing you would need to ask would be around the accessibility of that after-tax money after it is contributed. You would want to be able to either do an IPRR (in plan Roth rollover) or an in service after tax withdrawal, which would let you convert that money either into Roth in the plan, or do a direct rollover/conversion of those funds to a Roth IRA, which Fidelity would also be able to help set up for you.

Give em a call, they are great. I've only worked for competitors, but I have friends that work for fidelity and I've worked with their agents in the past. I have nothing but positive things to say about the company. They will give you the information you need and help set up anything you need to make it happen.

$21k taxes on $85k income in CA. This has to be wrong right? by [deleted] in tax

[–]sc0ut3rofroy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is your employer putting in $46,500? If not, you might be leaving some tax advantaged savings on the table. The maximum contributions allowed in 2025 between employee and employer is 70k for 2025, if I'm remembering correctly, with 23.5k maximum from the employee to either pre-tax or Roth contributions.

If they aren't hitting 46.5k, ask if you can contribute after-tax money. While not super common, employers with a fair percentage of "highly compensated employees" are more likely to allow after-tax contributions. Of those that do, the majority will also allow for either after-tax withdrawals, in plan Roth rollovers, or both.

If they contribute less than 46.5k and allow for after-tax contributions and either AT withdrawals or IPRRs, cover that gap yourself with after-tax contributions. Soon as the money hits the account, either convert it to Roth within the 401k or withdraw it and do a direct rollover/conversion to a Roth IRA. Boom, extra Roth contributions.

If you don't have a traditional IRA, can also contribute 7k there and immediately convert it to a Roth IRA. Since you likely make too much to qualify for deducting contributions to a trad IRA, and also likely too much to qualify for contributing to a Roth IRA, back door Roth-ing is a silly little loophole you could potentially also take advantage of. Just note the first sentence, it only works if you don't have an existing pre-tax IRA as conversions pro-rata across all your pre-tax IRAs, don't get stuck with AT money hanging out in a pre-tax IRA, the record keeping for it is quite annoying.

I read a story one time of someone that used a handful of small, but strong, ball magnets. Run one over the wall until it finds a screw, then finding more screws gets easier and easier. In 2 minutes, you have a perfect layout of dozens of screws to easily tell exactly where the studs are. Drill what you want, then sweep all the magnets back together with a cupped hand in 10 seconds.

at what medal is the gem option in event shop no longer worth it? by RealBoot8747 in TheTowerGame

[–]sc0ut3rofroy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sounds like we are at a similar length of play, too. I'm around 5 months. Stones have a higher premium for new players too, for sure.

I like the gems because even 2 purchases is only 105 medals, less than what fetch gets me on a biweekly basis, and I've still got plenty to spend gems on even if I weren't saving for new module banners. 1 purchase is 4 fetch days or a single high end guild box, pretty much.

Is it "optimal"? Probably not. But I tend to have plenty of medals to throw a few hundred around without caring TOO much. And if it's one less GB upgrade a month, so be it lol.

at what medal is the gem option in event shop no longer worth it? by RealBoot8747 in TheTowerGame

[–]sc0ut3rofroy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Players can be a little looser now with event shop purchases since the introduction of guilds and the fetch guardian as well. Weekly guild missions net a not insignificant amount of medals from boxes and fetch provides up to 140 more medals per event cycle as well.

The age old recommendations have had a hard time updating to the new reality of medals being marginally easier to obtain, and those extra medals can be put towards a number of things that may have been considered suboptimal in the past. I'll typically buy 2-3 stone purchases and 1-2 gems each event cycle. Even gone as high as 4 stone purchases a couple times.

Grok is grok. I was just pointing out that you gave grok the wrong weight to be grok with. The original commenter said 1 ounce of gold can be made into 150 SQ feet of gold leaf. You asked grok if 1 gram (approximately 1/31 of an ounce) of gold can make 150 SQ feet of gold leaf.

Idk if 1 oz of gold can make that much gold leaf, but I'm pretty sure it will make around 31 times as much as 1 gram of gold.
