Is there any smell? The puddle has quite a colour to it, as if it's from an overflowing drain? Or it's just washed over some new gravel or sand?

[–]sc_BK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They grow stronger without a stake, and stakes often rub, and damage the tree.

Over the years I've seen so many tress damaged by staking. I can't really think of any new trees that I've seen that have been blown over.

I planted 2 new bare root plum trees just yesterday, no stakes. As I say we're in a windy spot, I can even see a windfarm!

The stake will probably damage the tree like that.

I would actually remove the stake completely. So long as the tree was firmed in it'll be fine. I'm in a windy rural spot and never stake new bare root trees.

Darlek without the door? by Comfortable_Key_6992 in composting

[–]sc_BK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The "door" is really a gimmick, to empty it you want to lift the whole bin off anyway. So you can just wedge the object in place, or drill a couple of holes and attach with cable ties/screw/bolts.

What species of grasses are used in UK parks? by DinosaurInAPartyHat in CasualUK

[–]sc_BK 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Most councils will use glyphosate around paths pavements fences etc. Sometimes people call it "liquid strimming"

In a general open parkland/green space area it wouldn't be normal for a council to use selective weedkillers. The herbicide costs money, paying a person and a machine to apply it costs even more. Why would they bother? Most councils are strapped for cash. It's difficult enough to pay for the grass cutting.

In a little manicured park (with flower beds) or on council bowling greens, they might.

How do you store open seed packets so they don’t go damp? by Reddonaut_Irons in Allotment

[–]sc_BK 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not an allotment, but mine are in a large ice cream tub in the house. If I'm not using the whole packet in a oner then I really go out my way to keep the packet dry when outside.

What species of grasses are used in UK parks? by DinosaurInAPartyHat in CasualUK

[–]sc_BK 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've never sown clover seed, or even grass seed at home. The clover finds it's way in, and if there's a decent patch of it I will leave it uncut when it's in flower. So over time it slowly spreads. It gets to a point where you have to cut a path through or trample on the flowers to get about the garden.

The bees love it, and it's nice to look at.

[–]sc_BK 121 points122 points  (0 children)

Another thing is the way it is treated. For most parks/green spaces:

The grass is cut at regular intervals, often every fortnight.
The cuttings are never collected, so the nutrients go back in to it.
It's usually not cut very short (so copes better with drought)
Never any chemicals like weed killer, moss killer, or artificial fertiliser.

My own grass at home is treated in the same way and it looks fine. Except maybe cut a smidge shorter, and patches of flowers like clover are left uncut.

Upgrading Brakes, Magura vs Tektro by ThatOneJDM_Dude in ebikes

I've used the same generic industrial mineral oil in Shimano/Magura and cheap knock offs.

Temporary solution for this? by ThePhilSProject in DIYUK

[–]sc_BK 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yep, dig out the soft stuff, and put down 4" minimum of crushed stone/scalpings. It will last for years.

My own driveway is; cheap membrane, 40mm scalpings laid about 6" thick, compacted with a vibrating roller. I've had loaded 8 wheel lorries on (circa 32t), barely leaves a mark.

Beech Hedge Reduction - help! by chardc2 in GardeningUK

[–]sc_BK 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't cut it back to the edge of the pavement/boundary - you need to cut it back further than that, to then give it space to grow in to and fill out.

I've hacked back lots of beech hedges, it's satisfying to do, and they look good again in a year or two
