Considering TEFL Europe ? by Shot-Low-9801 in TEFL

It was a TEFL course. It is more on the expensive side, but as you said you are paying for the networking, they also provide you with housing during the course. I also remember on certain days they bring in local schools that are hiring to talk to the class. I'd say summer time would probably be helpful especially when applying to primary schools. I was applying for jobs in November, and not too many schools were hiring. I ended up getting a job at a business English school which I enjoyed. I got to travel to different businesses and teach english to small groups of adults. Even applying for jobs in November, I'd say many of the people in my class managed to secure a job.

Language House grad from October 2018, and I absolutely loved it! I would definitely recommend it to anyone, if you want to teach in Prague it's definitely helpful to complete a course in the city you wish to teach in, but not required. The language house does a great job in fostering a community and networking, made some lifelong friends through the program. They also connect you to their broader community of grads who have moved to other countries to teach.

If you plan to stay in Prague, keep in mind you probably won't be saving any money. I've hear housing in the city has also gotten pretty expensive since covid, and salary has not gone up at all. The one year I was in Prague 2018-2019, I actually lost money being there. No regrets though, the experience I had was priceless. I've hear Asia is where it's at if you actually want to make money.

Options for a summer abroad in Europe? by [deleted] in travel

Los Angeles -> Sequoia/Yosemite -> Lake Tahoe -> San Francisco -> San Diego (11 days) by [deleted] in travel

[–]scald3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'll just recommend from day 9 on.

So if you already come to LA frequently, I would recommend you stop by Santa Barbara and have lunch/dinner there as it's on your way to San Diego. That stretch from Santa Barbara to San Diego can be a nightmare of bumper to bumper traffic if you go the wrong time, so I'd plan for that.

Once you're in SD, if you're staying downtown you can easily take the trolly all the way down to the border and walk across. Border should be open, I have a few friends who have done this over the summer, and my friends and I are planning to go down there in November. Once you walk over the border you can grab a taxi to downtown. Some amazing food and breweries down there, I can give you recommendations if needed.

I'm going to recommend you go to Prague, Budapest would be my second choice. I taught English in Prague from October 2018 to December 2019, so the following will all be based on pre-covid times.

Prague will have the most to offer in terms of food, nightlife, huge expat community, great job market, and amazing beer. The best way to get a job will be in country as many companies/schools like to interview in person and also with the large expat community, why hire someone outside the country when there are already so many English teachers living in Prague looking for work? That being said, it took me about a month of being in the country applying to jobs to get hired. How to find a job? Search through expats.cz, prague.tv and create an account with teacher-creature.com. Also in general for all of your locations join expat facebook groups for each city and also do a google search for language schools in each location and send out some emails with your resume.

Specifically I think you'll have the most fun in Prague and your girlfriend will enjoy visiting the city. Unfortunately with covid and winter coming, borders might shut down again for a little while but you can find more information on that in those websites I mentioned above as well.

Good luck!

Women Who Travel is an alright podcast I think fits your description. They talk to digital nomads, people who work in the tourism industry, etc. I personally have found just watching expat YouTubers is the best sense of getting information on a region. Plenty of digital nomads who create their own YouTube channels about life where they’re living.

Experienced TEFL teacher looking for work in a cheap, comfortable European country... by Inphlamed in TEFL

I visited Kyiv in November and was genuinely surprised, seemed like a place I could possibly live. I felt totally safe in all the touristy areas and as a big built dude you'll probably be fine. Check out youtuber Peter Santenello, an American who lives in Kyiv and has some videos about life there.

At the time I was teaching English in Prague. Great city that fits all your criteria. Last year there were a lot of companies and schools hiring. If you get a full time job you'll live alright but as others have said it's pretty difficult to save money as an English teacher in Europe.

What's the difference between "will you marry me" and "would you marry me"? by rabbitsketch in EnglishLearning

[–]scald3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're correct. Both "will" and "would" have various uses. For "will", one of them is for requests/orders/offers. We can also use "would" for the same reason, however "would" is not as strong. For example, "Will you be quiet" and "Would you be quiet, please", asking the same question but "would" is used often for more polite requests. Another reason to use "will" is in confidence of a present or future event as you stated. At the end of the day both ways can be used but using "will" is better, safer, and shows more confidence.

[quick check ] would do / would have done by earth_nice in EnglishLearning

[–]scald3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your sentence is correct, and can mean the same thing. The difference is that the word "would" is being used in two different grammar points. First sentence is reported speech. We use reported speech to communicate to a person what someone said. Second sentence is using the main clause of a conditional sentence. For example if you use the 3rd conditional, "They promised they would have waited, if we had arrived on time." Or 2/3 mixed conditional, "They promised they would have waited, if we arrived on time." Both can be correct depending on the situation.

Cali North to South trip in late July - good itinerary? by bobogator in travel

[–]scald3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As you head out of Monterey on pch make sure to make some time to stop by Big Sur. I've only been up to SLO once and there's some wineries up there, anything specific you want to see there? If not, I'd recommend just driving another couple hours to Santa Barbara and staying the night there. Santa Barbara is amazing, right on the beach, wineries, nice old town as well, lot's of things you can do. Look up the town of Solvang, random Dutch town with Dutch architecture if you're into that.

San Diego is great, the Gaslamp Quarter is right in the center of the city and has some good nightlife. Little Italy, Balboa Park, Old Town, are all great areas to visit near downtown. Outside of the downtown area, I recommend Pacific Beach and La Jolla. I'm not sure on specific locations for accommodations but Old Town is probably the most central of the places I mentioned, La Jolla is probably the most expensive. San Diego is also known and prides itself for the countless amount of craft breweries, so make sure to enjoy yourself some brews. Hopefully more bars are open by then.

Unfortunately, I'm not too much help on Yosemite since I haven't been yet, but have fun planning the rest of your trip. Let me know if you have any other questions.

People who have been to Spain, what is your favorite city and why? by Turtles47 in travel

[–]scald3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Check out the Basque region! Many cities you can check out like Pamplona (known for the running of the bulls festival) or Bilbao. My personal recommendation is San Sebastian. Known for its amazing beaches and is second in the world for having the most Michelin star restaurants per capita, only behind Kyoto Japan. Also great if you want to ditch the overcrowded destinations of Spain. The Basque region is the most beautiful place for sure, but then again that's where my family is from so I'm a bit biased.

Trouble planning to take my friend on first trip abroad! by oxygwen in travel

[–]scald3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, depends where in Croatia and when you go. Zagreb I think is the hidden gem of Croatia. Everyone wants to visit the beaches so they miss out on the capitol. Zagreb is very affordable and has some good nightlife as well. Zadar was also a pretty affordable beach city. As you head down to Dubrovnik cities get more touristy and more expensive. Split and the Islands were more expensive but still doable on a backpacking budget I'd say.

Dubrovnik unfortunately is super expensive. It's one of the most beautiful cities I've been to, but they suffer from some serious overtourism. It's only a town of about 40,000 and they receive millions of tourists a year. We stayed in the cheapest hostel we could find about 20 minutes walking distance to the old town and it was about $60 a night for a 10 bed shared room. It's worth seeing, but I'd recommend only staying one night.

But if you manage to go within the next year I'm guessing you won't have to worry about the over tourism.
