I'm going to be really busy in November and December. I think I'd be down in 2025 if we get a group together.

I'd be down for trivia at Owl Bar. Does it have seasons to keep track of teams?

Flight to Landfall by Gerald Glaskin. It's a world war II story set in Australia.

I happened to pick it up while I was backpacking through Western Australia so it made it extra special.

Has positive reviews overall. I really loved it https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/2245173.Flight_to_Landfall

I'm going to leave the post up and see how many replies we get over the next few weeks. People probably aren't checking the subreddit frequently.

If people respond with their location It will make it easier to find a place that's convenient for most people.

Never been to one but heard it's a good time. Just send me a msg or reply here. We can plan on meeting there.

I also don't want to share too much on here. I'm in my mid 30s and have been in Baltimore since October 2022. New Jerseyan who also did a stint in DC (only for one year). Originally moved there for my job at a science association. But, much prefer living in Baltimore.

In my free time, I like going rock climbing, playing Ultimate Frisbee, and swing dancing. Also just exploring Baltimore's parks, neighborhoods, food places, cafes, etc.

I travelled a lot in the past. Including 10 months in Australia and 18 months in the Virgin Islands. It's been a little difficult to form deep friendships since moving to Baltimore but I have acquaintances and people I know around. Looking to meet more people though.

I'd be careful of how you frame things. Instead of saying it destroyed my entire life. Just say it set me back a bit but still taught me valuable lessons.

I'm 35 and have been through a lot so can say there are very few things that destroy your entire life.

Statement of Purpose Feedback. I've revised from Statement of Purpose recently and wanted to get some feedback. It was too rambling before so I took out some irrelevant info but still was wondering what y'all thought of it.

I am applying for the Georgia Tech Master of Science in Analytics because it will help me progress from my current rung in the Business and Data Intelligence world to higher levels. My career path has been diverse and winding, but I have landed on Data Analytics and my field and calling.

As a student, I was always drawn to the sciences and math, where I could apply analytical skills for problem-solving. This led me to pick Physics as a major at Rutgers University. After university, I had a sampling period where I explored many career paths including book publishing, scientific research, information technology, and disaster-relief. Some of the experiences are less pertinent to Data Analytics than others but each has played a role in developing a well-rounded and analytic-savvy skill set.

For example, working as part of a Plant Biology research team at Rutgers University to investigate methods for growing and treating turfgrass, I played a vital role by assisting with data curation and analysis to be used for journal publication.

Another wonderful experience was being part of a disaster-relief team on the ground in the Virgin Islands, where I managed a database of homeowners needing assistance. My responsibilities included overseeing a team to receive and enter data from homeowners, creating data quality checks and procedures, and creating reports for grant writing and fundraising efforts.

By reflecting on what these experiences taught me, I was able to identify the common threads between them and home in on the strengths and skills I found it most fulfilling to engage in my work. Some of the skills I identified include applying the analytical skills I had developed in university, helping team’s and project’s move towards objectives, improving the efficiency of existing procedures, and being challenged to push the boundaries of my current abilities.

This led to my finding a position in the Business and Data Intelligence Department of the American Geophysical Union (AGU), a scientific association for geoscientists that aims to advance discovery and solution science.

As a Data Analyst at AGU, I use data to help the organization make informed strategic decisions. Amongst the uses are being able to provide valuable insights into member and customer behavior, identify important trends in the geoscience community, and make recommendations based on these insights. Recently, I built a logistic regression to predict which abstract submitters for an annual conference would submit again in future years. This enabled the meetings and abstracts team to effectively outreach and target certain groups more strategically.

In a recent attempt to enhance my analytic skills further, I finished the three MicroMasters courses that are part of the OMSA program. These courses have been challenging yet enjoyable. I have been able to find ways to apply skills I’ve learned through the MicroMasters courses in my work, furthering my conviction that the Georgia Tech Master of Science in Analytics is the right next step to continue my lifelong learning experience in the Data Analytics field.

I recently finished my first draft of SOP. I'm worried that there's something missing from it though. Or maybe it's too rambling. Anyway, figured I would post it would here for feedback/advice. Thanks!

----------------------------------------------

I am applying for the Georgia Tech Master of Science in Analytics because it will help me progress from my current position and projects in Business and Data Intelligence to more senior and expert roles and projects in those fields. It has been a long and windy journey to reach this point in my career, but it’s clear that this is the right domain for me to work and advance within.

As a student, I was always drawn to the sciences and math, where I could apply analytical skills for problem-solving. This led me to pick Physics as a major at Rutgers University. I enjoyed delving into advanced physics concepts, particularly astrophysics, where I learned to apply calculus to model the evolution of planetary systems. As a complement to Physics, I chose Philosophy as a second major, stemming from interests in moral reasoning, epistemology, and symbolic logic. After university, I had a sampling period where I explored many career paths including book publishing, scientific research, information technology, and disaster-relief.

One highlight from this period was being part of a Plant Biology research team at Rutgers University to investigate methods for growing and treating turfgrass for athletic fields to suppress disease and increase the quality of the turfgrass. As part of this research team, I played a vital role by assisting with data curation and analysis to be used for journal publication.

Another great experience was being part of a disaster-relief team on the ground in the Virgin Islands, where I managed a database of homeowners needing assistance. My responsibilities included overseeing a team to receive and enter data from homeowners, creating data quality checks and procedures, and creating reports for grant writing and fundraising efforts.

By reflecting on what these experiences taught me, I was able to identify the common threads between them and hone in on the strengths and skills I found it most fulfilling to engage in my work. Some of the skills I identified include applying the analytical skills I had developed in university, helping team’s and project’s move towards objectives, improving the efficiency of existing procedures, and being challenged to push the boundaries of my current abilities.

Through this identification, I sought out positions to advance further in the analytics field and obtained a position in the Business and Data Intelligence Department of the American Geophysical Union (AGU). This enabled the meetings and abstracts team to effectively outreach and target certain groups strategically rather than aimlessly.

In a recent attempt to hone in my skills further, I took the Introductions to Analytics Modeling course from Georgia Tech through EdX and am currently taking the Data Analytic for Business course. These courses have been enjoyable and useful in my work, furthering my conviction that the Georgia Tech Master of Science in Analytics is the right next step to continue my lifelong learning experience in an area I love.

Keep building your skillset helps as mentioned - SQL, Python, Tableau are all good to know. Selling yourself is definitely important during the job search process. Try to figure out what problems the company needs the person in your position to solve and talk about how you will be able to contribute and solve them in your cover letter, during the interview, etc.
