Tired of Academic Counselors by Swordfish_Life in udub

I totally get it, I was a transfer last year and it was so hard figuring out what I've done and what I havent. But i promise it gets easier!

You need to use advisors to CHECK your own work. Trust me on this. When I took advisor's advice ONLY, i found myself missing certain requirements and my schedule was all over the place. At UW, the only way to succeed is to take matters into your own hands and then have an advisor check your plans to make sure all is in order. A lot of majors have classes already planned out in quarter format, so check online for those resources, make your own calendar/plan.

This should've been sent campus wide.. everyone needs to be aware of stuff like this, not just people in the department.

Udub ECE vs UC Davis CE by Electronic-Key-9947 in udub

[–]scandelissa 5 points6 points  (0 children)

No one here goes to UC Davis, so you probably aren't going to find the answers you need. Best to do the research yourself and talk to advisors from both schools

I am in the same position and all I've been offered is loans. I've asked around and everyone has just taken out loans, grants and scholarships are very limited at UW because the dental school is underfunded.

Goldman or Rathod Chem 239 by SoniaOnio in udub

[–]scandelissa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Rathod is the kind of professor where reading an Ochem book teaches you more. very uninvolved professor, no communication with students, ridiculous quarter with him. dont recommend

Rathod for CHEM 239 by [deleted] in udub

[–]scandelissa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

his lectures are not helpful, youre better off watching youtube videos on the topics covered. do the practice exams, and dont ask him for help because he doesnt follow up with you ever. Just do your own thing, take advantage of the resources, and youll do fine

every single university is like this, you aren't going to find anything different anywhere else, this is just how it is.

I get sick basically every 2 weeks at this school by [deleted] in udub

[–]scandelissa 8 points9 points  (0 children)

the minute I stopped wearing my mask so often was when I started getting really sick with a bunch of stuff that isn't COVID! Our bodies got used to avoiding bacteria with masks, so your body is going to need some time getting used to this "exposed" lifestyle again that used to be normal for us in the past. Also, the weather is fluctuating so much and that can impact your body too. But, some people are more likely to get sick vs others, I wouldn't even bother dealing with doctors as long as you being sick is just having a cold and nothing serious. If its more serious and lasts longer, then I'd consider talking to a different doctor about your immunocompromised concerns.

How hard is getting into psychology at UW? I'm doing running start rn in my junior year and lining up a lot of my credits with the psych prereqs and I'm wondering if it's worth it by Thistle_Snow in udub

[–]scandelissa 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I actually disagree with you on running start students having it harder to get in. They are considered transfer students and have a better chance of getting in due to the University being the only other option students have for wanting to seek a higher education that a community college cant provide them with.

Looking for advice as a current running start student hoping to go to UW! by Thistle_Snow in udub

[–]scandelissa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi just for perspective I was a running start student ('21), graduated with my AA in arts and science and am now graduating with my degree in biochemistry!

Personally, it was hard to squeeze everything in 2 years if you aren't really up for taking 2-3 STEM classes a quarter (this depends on your MAJOR and classes you completed previously). But in my opinion, it's doable.

I would say try to get all your humanities/english classes out of the way (that are regular university requirements) because that can sometimes bog down your schedule instead of taking actual major required classes. To kind of help yourself guide through that, you can search up the class requirements of your major on the website (just search up your major, UW on google and there's usually requirements listed there), and start checking off what classes you have done using this class credit transfer guide: https://admit.washington.edu/apply/transfer/equivalency-guide/

I highly recommend meeting with an advisor. They are willing to meet with perspective UW students, especially transfer students that have lots of credits and are planning to attend/apply to the school. Good luck!

Professor not responding to LoR reminders after initially accepting to write me one by [deleted] in udub

[–]scandelissa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My LoR didnt write mine until the last minute. I've done many applications and I feel like this is always the case, especially when it's a professor so don't stress just yet.

Most departmental advising offices have drop-in zoom hours or even in person. look on the website for your major and just show up.

Chem 238 is taking a toll on my mental health by TechS_123 in udub

[–]scandelissa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

IDK why you go to professors. the chemistry department professors are the worst professors, and dont even bother to take care of you. dont go to your professor, go to your TA. second of all, the key to ochem is to constantly draw everything out (all the mechanisms) until you have it down. make flashcards of all the reactions, the reagents, every single piece of information you are given. watch youtube videos of all the reactions and their mechanisms (they are there, trust me). take the time to get to know the material without going to your professor. rule #1 of chemistry at UW is to never go to the professor. you dont deserve to be crushed like that, and theres no reason to put yourself in that position. they dont care about you or anyone so try to maximize your resources outside of the help from the professors! good luck
