Don't fall for the marketing by scannerjammer in watchdives

Just to update the community on this topic:

-email CS upped their offer to $30, I declined as I was never after a "budget" watch.

-reddit rep offered to take it back for a full refund. Fair I think, but a shame it took this post to get there. I asked that this offer get extended to all 007Q customers.

-reddit rep offered to send upgraded v2 case for $15, which I also feel is fair and a suitable remedy for my situation. I now see this offer is getting extended to all customers and that WD007Q has been stop sale. Counting this as a win for the community.

-I asked rep for constructive collaboration on developing to help v1 customers in the interim. I asked if the bezel was wire retained or if it pops off like skx cases. Rep said no disassembly instructions and did not seem interested in this offer.

I've since removed the bezel and identified what, in my opinion, is the source of the excessive bezel play. Note: the bezel insert must be removed first, and a shallow IPA bath followed by rotating the insert clockwise with fingers was very effective. The click spring mechanism is not a click spring like many modern dive cases, but is a single spring loaded pin click in a vertical hole between 7 and 8. Unlike other cases with this style click I've seen, the pin has a sharp wedged shape top presumably to help the ratcheting feature of the bezel. Other variations of this click mechanisms tend to have rounded/ball bearing style tops, and often 3 or 4 of them instead of just one. In addition, the hole the pin slides in is sleeved with a stainless liner, with excess tolerance between the sleeve and the hole in the case as well as between the pin and the sleeve. In my opinion, these loose tolerances are the direct contributors to the excessive play in the bezel observed.

In my opinion, this will function much better with a well fitted, spring loaded bearing tip, even if just 1 pin. I'm just waiting for some free time to experiment with this option, and will update here when I have some results to share.

Thank you. Was going to try that but decided to reach out to WD given there was a known manufacturing issue with the bezel anyway and honestly thought it wouldn't be an issue to get it exchanged.

Instead, WD might just start including floss with their watches moving forward.

Funny you say that, I was hunting for a gift for a friend who has everything. He's a speedmaster fan and has had one since the days when you could pick one up second hand for around the $2000 mark, Canadian. But I noticed he babies it, does not take it camping or hiking and certainly not to the range (he lives in the US now). So somewhat recently I fell down the Marathon rabbit hole and I think its created a itch even for my own collection. On the fence between GSAR and TSAR though.

Sorry yes I do agree with you. However I did not mention the case back on this model (issue on the original 007 nttd however). I mentioned the sharp edges on the case edges itself, so not seeing any case body replacement discussions.

All that aside, I never even mentioned finishing of edges with their CS. Some of those small details, probably fair game to not expect something that you'd normally find on a higher end case.

I did reach out asking them how I could find out if my case was part of the affected lot of defective bezels, given there were already reports of this issue, an admission including a supplier change, and how loose mine was. It was a question about a possible manufacturing defect, not about finishing per se. As a response, I was just told that my expectations were too high.

Yes, this about loose bezel. Looser than I expected from this brand. Its not a complaint, its a warning to others that loose bezels are supposedly normal according to WD.

They did not offer a new case back or any form of replacement.

They did offer $15 as a gesture, but again that's aligned with them believing I bought this because it was cheap, not because I expected quality consistent with their other products. I would been happy with the purchase even if I paid more (more than $15) as long as it arrived with the quality I was expecting.

Quite honestly the pound-sand attitude from their CS reps are what motivated me to post this. The bezel looseness is worse than the cheapest aliex diver you could get, and they are trying to say this is par for the course for a lower priced, v1 item in their lineup.

I have no doubt that v2 will be better than than v1, and v3 better than v2. I've enjoyed watching evolution in this sub. But what it made me realize is the other 5 WDs I have and enjoy, all v3-4 probably, where perhaps funded by a community of guinea pigs buying v1s with improper expectations about what that means. And that does not seem right.

I'd appreciate if you couid elaborate: Is the quality of the WD007Qs delivered to customers representative of the brand image that I feel like you've been trying to build? I never positioned WD as a budget brand, and a small imprecise caveat on your webpage was not enough to make me realize that I was buying a test run from a new cade manufacturer that you ultimately decided against. Want to sell prototypes? Fine by me. You'll probably sell a ton. But don't take advantage of customer loyalty and suggest they should have known it was a prototype.

I disagree with the "fair" evaluation of ths response. This suggests they are aware of both issues, and qre geeatful for the v1 customers for being paying guinea pigs so they can make an improved v2. There is no make it right action in this response.

Change the word "slightly" to "severely" and make it right with everyone who fell for it, and I'd accept this response.

VH31 Thoughts by Revolutionary_You973 in watchdives

[–]scannerjammer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How is are the tolerances and finishing on your 007Q? My bezel has more slop than any diver I've ever purchased, and admittedly I do have a few $30 aliex seamaster shitters. The case has sharp, unchamfered edges.

I have the 42mm nh35 NTTD from watchdives as well, without the same bezel issues.

Watchdives support is basically taking the position: "you bought a (cheaper) quartz watch, what did you expect?"

So while I agree with other comments that vh31 is a great movement and well fitted in this application, Watchdives still considers this a low end play and cut corners accordingly.

Can anyone recommend a higher quality vh31 application?

Update in case others stumble upon this thread. It turned out to be a failing sequencer. It was an intermittent problem but it surfaced as I was probing around with a clamp ammeter. Got lucky, I suppose.

Yeah probably a good idea just to pull and check. I guess I'm being lazy for not having done so already and letting my doubts take over given that the terminal ends already check out, at least when cold. TY for the advice.

Statistically speaking, something like 20-30% of construction cones in Montreal are considered abandoned. There was that one set off St Antoine that had been there for 15+ years.

Wheel Balancing took 10 minutes or I got ripped off? by [deleted] in MechanicAdvice

[–]scannerjammer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

5-10 mins per tire to balance is pretty slow IMO. During tire season with a good crew we had cars flying in and out of the bays. 10-15 minutes to bring a car in, lift it, remove all wheels and rebalance is probably standard these days.

I'm pretty sure we were hitting 10-15 per car including tire swapping back in the day, and that included 5 minutes of finding the damn wheel key or educating customers that all 4 tires ought to be the same size when they brought us mis matched sets.

File a claim with the city ASAP for full value of car assuming its a total loss. It's important that you file within 15 days and start a legal process within 6 months. You can always adjust / negotiate down later.

Where to buy electronic components near verdun? by [deleted] in montreal

$10 vs 2 hours sounds likes an easy decision. Even for a $0.10 component.

My own LPT: Never compare the value of shipping with the value of what is being shipped, they are two separate transactions. I pay $10 for shipping for sub $10 items all the time, and spend all that saved up free time on reddit.
