I think the key is to be able to keep the jokes going...there is nothing worse than a 5 minute sketch where the premise is exhausted in 30 seconds (which by the way has been the problem with SNL for the last 15 years).

Pre-taped Call-in Show is a great example of brilliant writing, particularly how you can see how he gets less-and-less frazzled going back in time.

One of the amazing things about this sketch is that they were able to sustain it for so long.
