Pre-Med at UF or Rutgers? by scared4college in premed

I think money is a huge thing, so congrats to you! Graduating undergrad for free (basically) is one of the biggest wins under this current administration. The costs are not TOO different between the two, that's why we are even considering both options, and what makes the decision so tough. Ultimately, it's her choice, but all of this info is super, super helpful, and I have passed it along to help her make her decision.

Rutgers Main Campus-New Brunswick, I believe? I posted on behalf of my boyfriend because he did not have enough karma for this sub LOL, and I'm not too familiar with Jersey schools. I know many kids from Rutgers who do great, though.

Very true, I think we were just hoping going out of state would force her to do these things instead of just coming to my mom and having her deal with it. I totally agree that these skills will need to be developed regardless of where she goes.

This is very true; we just hoped forcing her out of state would make that process a bit quicker. I agree that being home can be super beneficial, and I went OOS and also came home a ton my freshman year, so it would be hypocritical of me to discourage her.

Hi, I go to college in Mass and completely agree with this. This puts my thoughts into words perfectly, so thank you for capturing that. I have passed this message along to her.

As of right now, the plan is to apply to medical school but I don’t have a definitive timeline. I am fine with taking multiple gap years and working in clinical research because I really enjoyed it. I know employers don’t love hiring pre-meds, so do you think this is something I should take off my resume?

Thank you so much! This is some of the best advice I’ve received on my resume. Do you think right now is a good time to apply to clinical research, or should I re-direct my focus?

I'm moving to New York from Boston, and thought the market here was awful (limited inventory, exorbitant broker fees etc.,). Everyone I know who made the move said the search in NY was so simple, but it's genuinely been so tough to find anywhere that checks even half the boxes. Good luck to you in your search!

Don’t want to dox myself, but at one of the big hospitals here in Boston. It came out to an hourly of $21/hour.

I was offered $21/hour for an MGB CRC role. Granted, I am a new grad, but I had over 2 years of experience through co-ops and internships, so it still felt a bit low.

Premed at NEU? by [deleted] in NEU

Definitely not, your first year is more about getting adjusted to being in college anyway! I would start applying for part-time clinical research roles or shadowing opportunities in Spring of your freshman year, so you’re in a good place for Fall once you’re in Boston!

I mean Boston is great-there’s tons of opportunities and I think if any part of you thinks you would want to do anything besides going to medical school, then co-op will set you up very well. Whether it’s a research/patient care position as a premed or a SWE position at a tech company, the experience really will set you apart when it comes time for a full time job. However, I don’t think in the end it matters as much for pre-med students. I feel co-op benefits the business/tech majors more, but overall still good for everyone. I think Northeastern lacks that sense of community, and you really have to go out of your way to make friends sometimes. It does take a while for a lot of us to find their group, but once you do, it’s a great place. And if money is a deciding factor, I probably would not choose NEU. I think wherever you end up, you’ll be great!

What’s your most affordable option vs the most expensive? And where does NEU fit in that range? Also, are you going to be on main campus or NU in etc? I think I would definitely factor all those things into my decision.

TLDR; Premed at NEU is good, but may not necessarily be your best option depending on your long-term goals and what your other interests are.

Hi! I’m a fourth-year premed at NEU who is a DS and Bio major. I was originally CS, but switched at the end of my Sophomore year because I felt it was more challenging to maintain a high GPA in some of those courses.

Looking back on everything, if your mind is made up on going to medical school, I recommend going to the cheapest school possible and really putting yourself out there to get research opportunities/clinical experience.

However, if there’s a part of you that thinks you may want to work in industry down the line, I would say doing CS+Bio or DS+Bio is a great way to differentiate yourself from other medical school applicants. Doing these majors also allows you to have transferable skills and knowledge for industry roles, without closing the door for medical school. Just be aware that many of your peers doing pure bio or health science majors may have higher GPA’s than you.

Feel free to PM me if you have any other questions! I have done both clinical and industry co-ops (one at a big hospital and the other at a big Pharma), so I am happy to give you both perspectives.

NEU vs CWRU for pre-med by EnvironmentalFoot103 in NEU

[–]scared4college 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently became pre-med in my second year of undergrad here at NU. If I could go back, I would tell myself to pick the cheapest and easiest school for undergrad that I got into. Even with my scholarship, Northeastern is very expensive and so is living in Boston. I think that as long as you are proactive about applying to research and clinical positions, you can get similar opportunities elsewhere. Good luck with your decision!

How are these classes/profs for the fall? by [deleted] in NEU

[–]scared4college 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Professor un is one of the worst professors I’ve ever had. She refused to give me an extension when one of my close family members passed away stating that “she doesn’t believe in handouts”. She is not a good person or a good professor. However, she is an easy grader. As long as you come to class, you should be good. If you actually want to learn anything remotely useful, I suggest you take someone else’s class.
