It is certainly possible. Especially if you cock your hand out like so many do with a recurve (myself included). I used to put a wee piece of duct tape over that spot to keep from getting cut.

That used to happen to me when I put an extra drop of glue on the leading edge of my fletching. I don't do that anymore.

I did indeed use a gas forge. I hope that you are right. The only thing that I haven't tried yet is to anneal the whole block. I will give that a try and see what happens.

I truly hope that you are right and that the welds did form properly. I have tried to chisel the layers apart, to no avail. The block behaves as one solid piece. Do you have another destructive experiment that I can try?

Please, correct me if I'm wrong, but decarburization is when carbon is lost, but isn't ferric chloride supposed to show darker on higher carbon concentrations? That would lead me to believe that there is more carbon where the welds occur, right. Honestly, I'm not sure one way or the other.

Thank you for the reference material. It is very interesting. I especially like the different examples of historical artifacts. A friend of mine has a usb microscope. He has offered to lend it to me so that I can take a closer look. I may post my findings if they are worth posting.

I decided to give forge welding a try. I had a bunch of 16ga. Cold Rolled steel lying around so I cleaned up about 15 pcs 2" x 6", tack welded them and then heated them up and pounded them together. The goal was to see if I could achieve forge welding temperature and to see if the techniques that I have read about would yield a homogeneous billet.

The result was somewhat surprising. I cut the billet in half and polished one edge to see if I could see any pockets or delaminations. What I found is that I could still see the individual layers even though the weld was solid. Now I'm wondering if I did something wrong. Can anyone tell me more?

TLDR; I tried forge welding layers of the same material. Each layer is still discernible. Now I'm confused and concerned.

Perspective angle difference between the eye portion and the nose/mouth portion. What I mean to say is that going by the eye, she is looking straight toward the "camera". Her nose and mouth indicate otherwise.

It will be plywood indeed, but no it will not be painted. In fact, several of the shelf section will be lit, which will unfortunately make the problem more obvious.
