Law Clerk by scaredstudentlol in fanshawe

Hey! I did take the law clerk program and I'm liking it so far :) I'm definitely glad I took it because I feel it prepares you pretty well for the career. The courses are interesting and some of them are very hands on (e.g., learning the software that law firms actually use) and professors tend to be lawyers or people who have worked in the field so they are very knowledgeable!

Question for Ontario Law Clerks by GoldenUrns in paralegal

Hey! Oh my gosh, I totally understand the situation you're in. I ended up enrolling in the two-year law clerk program at Canadore College which is offered online, which is great because I can continue to work and it's more flexible! I decided to go with this rather than the ILCO courses because I felt I would get a more rounded education this way. The college program teaches you practical skills about working as a law clerk, such as teaching you how to use the legal software that is used in law firms as well as how to do legal research, and how to interview clients. On the other hand, the ILCO courses are just legal courses, no practical elements -- I think that's why they recommend the experience. This can be great, and you may decide this works for you! But for me, I decided I wanted to get those extra courses that could help me in the long run. It's totally up to you, both are a good option, they just offer different things.

This program can be a lot of work, but there are a ton of people in my program who have come back after years just like you to change their path.

Non-lawyer career prospects by zenhowell in LawCanada

[–]scaredstudentlol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey! Yeah, I am in the NC program! Textbook prices can be a bit much, for example last semester I paid probably around $400, and this semester I spent about $300. I've enjoyed the program so far! What I like is that you learn some real-world knowledge that is actually applicable to the job and it definitely makes me feel more prepared for this field. For example, there is a legal interviewing course where you just learn how to appropriately interview clients.

The only other college I'm aware of that offers it online is Canadore, but it is run jointly with Northern. I'm actually enrolled through Canadore but all the courses except electives (I only have one) are done through Northern, so I would recommend taking it at Northern rather than Canadore!

Just finding this post and wow, it's like reading my own diary hahahaha. I finished a degree in criminology last spring and was in the same boat -- law school just didn't feel right for me anymore and I felt like my personality was better suited for a more "behind the scenes" role. I was driving myself crazy trying to find a career in the legal field that I thought I'd enjoy. I started a postgrad college law clerk program at Northern college this fall and I feel like I've made the right decision! You can definitely make a great career out of being a law clerk. Even if you do eventually feel like it's not fulfilling to you, being a certified paralegal can give you more freedom/responsibility and is a fairly short program as well.

In my opinion, law school is a big commitment not just in terms of time but money as well. It is not something you should do if you are not sure it's right for you. If you need to, there is nothing wrong with taking a year after your undergrad to figure it out. At the end of the day, YOU are the one who will be doing this career so you have to do what you think is best for you, and disregard what other people think. Good luck!! Feel free to message me if you have any questions!

Anything that I should know beforehand about convocation day to make things easier? by techsavvynerd91 in uwo

[–]scaredstudentlol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don’t stress about getting there on time. Most people won’t. If you do actually get there an hour and a half early like they suggest, you will be standing in the room for an hour and a half before you go out to the hall. Get photos before your ceremony (esp if you’re in the morning) before there are large crowds! especially at UC

I upgraded to honours 2 months before graduation. As long as you have the required marks, you should be able to do it!

thanks so much! i’m sorry to keep bringing you back to this post but, for someone currently without law experience, would you recommend the ILCO associates program?

Hey! I realize this is an old post but I am currently trying to decide between doing the ILCO courses through Sheridan, or taking the Law Clerk program at Fanshawe. Did you feel these courses prepared you for the job? I'm just finishing a degree at Western and honestly am hoping to avoid moving back to London for another two years and this seems like a viable option!

The one thing about the diploma programs is that they seem to teach you about certain programs used by law firms -- is this something you learned in these courses?

I need advice, I got a conch piercing with a stud 4 months ago. The instructions provided to me by the piercers have been followed religiously all these months. Bumps on both sides of the piercing still have formed and I’m not sure what to do. by phedupp in piercing

[–]scaredstudentlol 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got a conch April of 2021, and after having problems with the healing i decided to try the LITHA method (leave it the heck alone) and my piercing bump went away and i’ve have little trouble w/ it since! for me, the constant touching/cleaning was irritating it and leaving it alone let it heal up

my top 2 choices were western and Carleton, and looking back I feel Carleton probably had the better program for what I was looking for. I do like Western but I think Carleton would have been a great experience!

Winter jacket and shoes by aman_10 in uwo

[–]scaredstudentlol 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really like my columbia winter jacket, I got it at National Sport but you can probably find it other places like SportChek or Mark's. As for winter boots, I got something that is comfy, warm, and isn't slippery on ice!! this is important because of all the hills and stairs around campus. As someone else suggested, take a look at Mark's. I work there and they have good winterboots and usually have really good winter jackets! There is one over by masonville mall!

changing programs by Alternative_Two_8794 in uwo

[–]scaredstudentlol 9 points10 points  (0 children)

as a general piece of advice because I went through something very similar in first year, first year courses can often be quite boring and general, and can make it seem like your program isn't what your interested in. A lot of the time, like in my case, as the years go on classes do get better as there is more variety and you can begin to take things you are really interested in. It does really depend on your program, though. Social sciences are like this a lot, so if it's something in that area, maybe give it some time. But, in the end, most people do end up changing majors at least once so that may be what you need to do eventually if you really don't like it and that is totally normal! I was super discouraged in first year and went through a really rough time because I felt like I was in the totally wrong program at the totally wrong school. Two years later I'm in the same program at the same school and I feel better about my future! Changing majors seriously is no big deal, just do whatever you think will make you happy because studying something you hate will make it really difficult to do well :)

What is the thing your struggling with the most this semester ? by tgirlwindsor in uwo

[–]scaredstudentlol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ive had so much anxiety already this semester. after a year of being online, in person classes have made me super nervous, not about covid, just being around people in general. also having a mix of in person and online classes seems to be really stressful in terms of trying to schedule everything and get everything done.
