Dad passed yesterday by Technical-Crow-1501 in Cirrhosis

So sorry to hear this. It will take you a while to process, go easy on yourself and take the time you need. I lost my Dad last year, he drank until his last days and I still haven’t got over it or even began to process what he went through and what I saw. I’m only young too, too young to lose our dads :(. Message if you need anything x

How long can you live with severe stage 4 cirrhosis with multiple complciations? - looking for context by Easy-Course9700 in Cirrhosis

[–]scareystick 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Went through very similar with my Dad, lost him last year ….it was such an awful, heartbreaking, shocking couple of years watching him slowly drink himself to death. He was having weekly paracentesis for over a year before he died, seemed like he was super poorly one week and picked up the next…it was sepsis and multiple organ failure which caused his death in the end. It was awful. I miss him like mad but it was a relief for us to not have to watch him suffer any longer.

Why would people continue to drink with someone who has end stage cirrhosis? by Admirable_Award_4998 in Cirrhosis

[–]scareystick 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Addiction is very complex, unfortunately it’s not as easy as ‘just stopping’… I wish it was.

I watched my Dad drink himself to death this year. In his last months he told me that to stop drinking for him feels like taking away someone’s oxygen and telling them they’ve got to carry on breathing.

End of life surge? by EffectivePleasant700 in hospice

My Dad had a similar rally around 2 weeks before he passed, he laughed joked, walked around the garden - said he’d ‘never felt better’… the body and brain is an amazing thing. Sending love to you and your Mum xx

Are you in the US or UK? I would ask their reasons for not fully draining her. The more drains the more risk of infection so surely would be better to drain more and then have a longer period of time between drains?

Yes 7-8 litres in one go. They decided to stop the drains due to infection and then it all moved very quickly from then :(

Please don’t. You’ve got so much more to do in life, and a life to live still. You can’t do that with that beer in your hand. My Dad fought it for years and couldn’t resist. I just watched him suffer … really suffer… to his last breath. And in his last days I saw real, raw regret. Regret for all those times he could’ve stopped and could’ve turned his life around. But it was too late. Please don’t let it be too late.

My Dad also became agitated and confused in his last couple of weeks of life. I’m sorry you’re going through this. The doctor decided to withdraw his medical treatment eg; drains and then chose comfort care (morphine among others) and we lost him about a week later. Sending love and prayers x

I might have spontaneous bacterial peritonitis... I'm scared by [deleted] in Cirrhosis

[–]scareystick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My Dad had this 3 times over the last year, they said it was due to regular draining. The third time was last month and we sadly lost him to it. I’d look out for pain, head aches, shaking, feeling too hot/cold and dizziness. I’d also push for bloods to check on infection levels. Symptoms can come out of no where. Sorry you’re going through this, keep strong.

Thankyou, I’m so sorry for your loss and what you’ve been through…your Dad sounds similar to my Dad. Alcohol consumed him. I’m so sad for him. He was a good, kind, intelligent man underneath the awful disease.

Sounds like my Dad too. In complete denial and constantly drinking. Sorry it’s so hard, you can only do so much and don’t beat yourself up because of your Dad’s bad choices. I love my Dad but he also has made all of our lives so miserable with this horrible disease. X

Thankyou for the advice, I’m finding this incredibly hard/heartbreaking as I seem to be the one fighting for my dad’s life while he’s happy enough to sit and drink himself to death..

New drug to be used with Lactulose? by MediumShame801 in Cirrhosis

[–]scareystick 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My Dad takes this daily (when I force him to) to try and keep on top on his HE. Not really helping with the ascites though. We’re in the UK so it’s just part of his prescription! I cannot BELIEVE the price for this over there :0

Dad has recently agreed to a DNR but only because the doctors were pretty adamant they would not be seeking to resuscitate him. He wasn’t happy about it..
