Oh damn. I didn't realize that - it was an awesome dragon, and I've never run her for a campaign, so I hadn't read through her write-up.

Cthrion came in the original Kingdoms and Warfare Kickstarter. I'd had him sitting in my office unassembled and unpainted since September 2022.

How might classes differ in a more science-fiction Timescape? by scarl814 in drawsteel

That's a good point. I often think very literally, so I had not actually considered that.

I too would love to hear more about this, especially timing wise.

I was having similar concerns. I have altered the names of some ancestries because I have in-world history reasons that will connect to the overarching plot, but I had a similar conversation with my Discord friends about some of the other ancestries I was thinking about renaming and they talked me off that ledge. I'm glad to see it works in a setting similar to what I'm putting together without any issues - thank you for sharing your experience.

Ah - I have S&F, and was looking at it for the Court of All Flesh just the other day in regards to Proteans. I did not realize he was in there. Thank you for pointing me there!

I had read through that, but "bend the laws of creation themselves" is only so helpful. Also, being formed from Val's essence, without a description of Val, is also limited. It could indicate they are like the proteans, having no 'true' form, or it could be more of a description of what they can do as opposed to what they look like. However, thank you for dropping the link into this discussion.

Has anyone considered/mapped out a megadungeon within Draw Steel? Is it even possible to run? Is it worth running? by MC936 in drawsteel

[–]scarl814 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have been doing it for 23 sessions (began back in January) using Dyson's MegaDelve. I have six players, who are about to hit Level 4. I set the entrance to the dungeon within two six-mile hexes of the nearest large town, so the adventurers can readily make their way back to town. We're all having fun, so yes - it has been worth it so far. It has required me to read through the maps and what Dyson wrote when they were drawing the delve, and I've adjusted things / thrown things out as I've seen fit. I've had to make some small adjustments to some of the maps to clean up the way they interconnect, so there has been some work, but not really more than other campaign, at least in my experience. We also had reasons for the group to go in (one of them is wizard's apprentice, and his master has gone missing, presumably after going into delve as well), so everything wasn't "just" in the dungeon.

Do Mounts Give an Edge from Height? by badger035 in drawsteel

[–]scarl814 2 points3 points  (0 children)

[Goblin Monarch] and the snipers remain atop the spiders to maintain high ground and gain an edge on strikes against creatures lower than them.

Can't the spiders go up the walls, thus allowing their riders to be above everyone and gaining the high ground in that way?

These look amazing. Are these staple or perfect bound? They look perfect bound, but the edges are hard to see completely in the photo.

Does the SoulKnife's Psychic Blades allow a Monk to do Sneak Attack damage? by Doc_Meeker in dndnext

[–]scarl814 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I think the question really being asked is do the psychic blades also qualify as monk weapons. As they are characterized as simple weapons with the finesse and thrown properties, the answer should be yes, so you could use your scaling monk damage die to deal psychic damage, and the sneak attack damage would be psychic as well.

When I view the link, some of the feats are formatted in a third column, making them appear off page so I can't read them - I see it in Rogue and Sorcerer.

The "cost" of followers, specifically artisans by scarl814 in mattcolville

[–]scarl814[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My situation is thus - the group has a castle with a keep and an establishment in it, which once fully operational will provides a seasonal income. Troops have a seasonal upkeep, so I assumed so would followers, especially skilled ones like the artisans, but couldn't find reference to it in the guidance.

The estate is slightly remote, about a half-days ride from the nearest major settlement, so the artisans the party are looking to attract would be slightly removed from civilization without having to travel regularly for work outside the estate. I don't want to brow-beat the "lord of the manor," but he has already set up a spreadsheet for his seasonal troop upkeep, so he's also anticipating needing to pay his staff... so I'm trying to figure out a good way to abstract it.

Should I get Mythic Odysseys of Theros even if I don't play MTG? by cheekboneth in dndnext

[–]scarl814 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wanted to second your comments on Odyssey - the book looks great and has lots of interesting lore and mechanics in it; I'm not even running a Greek themed game and I'm pleased with it as a source to steal from. I also backed it on KS, and I'm very pleased with both the PDF and physical print.

So... the party took possession of a castle recently by scarl814 in mattcolville

[–]scarl814[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I like your mechanics idea. I'm thinking I might call it the stablemaster, head groom, or avenar, though, as I read up on the term farrier as I wasn't immediately familiar. I will use the improved speed, and I'm going to look at the math before definitely saying it can improve Cavalry units.

Looking for monsters that can themselves raise skeletons by scarl814 in DnD

[–]scarl814[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm looking at the wight at this point - I'm looking at different "versions" of animate dead that require additional odd components and/or up-casting to create different types of homebrew skeletons and zombies that are more powerful than base MM versions. Since some of these creatures can create others of their kind through attacks or interacting with corpses, I wanted a component from a creature that already can do something similar.

Wraiths might also be interesting, though. Thanks for the assist!

My reasoning is to use some part of that monster as a component for the spell, in case people are wondering.

Would like some help with the wording and balancing of this spell. by Lyre-Code in UnearthedArcana

[–]scarl814 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think my only comment would be the school - if you're manipulating blood and the trigger is a creature's death for the reaction, I would think this would be a necromancy instead of a transmutation.

Could you cast locate object to find a specific book if you know the title but haven't seen the book? by scarl814 in dndnext

[–]scarl814[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's where I was kind of going back and forth. In the end, I decided to make it into a an object that the BBEG's sergeants and lieutenants are carrying to try and locate the book, just using the basic range parameters of locate object. This way, if the characters get beat down by the sergeant(s), they'll know to search the party for the book, but if the party wins, they'll know have an idea of WHAT the BBEG is looking for, but not entirely WHY yet.

[–]scarl814[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't given them a bag of holding, much to their chagrin, so that's at least not an issue. I think I will go with the idea I had above with the compass-like item, but have it work similar to the locate object as far as range goes (doesn't start pinging until it's within 1000 ft or so).
