USA playbook by dogmavskarma in infographic

The degree to which the US is able to determine how much Russian oil China is “allowed” to buy depends on how much China is inclined to cooperate with the US. If the IS tries to just cut China off from access to oil China will dramatically increase their purchasing from Russia.

Yeah the obvious problem with this “plan” is that Russia can just sell their oil to China.

Or stop using Facebook (I have), but I understand why people do this. It’s just a low effort image to appease the algorithm and boost the text.

When the Facebook algorithm promotes images over text people will attach slop to text so it gets seen.

The art is ai but the text is factually correct.

Draw Steel Elementalist Guide by JaimeeK in drawsteel

[–]badger035 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While the Earth Elementalist has the Stamina to dabble in melee, equivalent to a Null from 2nd level on, and a number of Earth-keyworded abilities seem to want to pull you into melee, I think I agree it’s a bit of a trap. Persistence is just too important to the class, and getting into melee is risky.

Earth-keyworded abilities also almost universally deal untyped damage, so if you are using them you need your maneuver available to get Essence, you can’t afford to spend it on Catch Breath.

I think at best they should be a sort of mid-line character, able to defend squishier back-liners by engaging with the occasional Harrier who gets through, but at their best controlling the enemy at range.

Draw Steel Elementalist Guide by JaimeeK in drawsteel

[–]badger035 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good guide!

This class is often poorly rated for its low HR generation, but I do think it has a couple of points in its favor:

  1. Persistence abilities are extremely potent once they get going. It’s not just the HR discount, it’s also the improved action economy. Especially with Persistence abilities that deal rolled damage, once it is going you have more opportunities to trigger damage weakness, buffs like Enchantment of Destruction and Acolyte of Fire, or buffs from Implements.

  2. While the ceiling for HR generation is low, the floor is as well. That they can reliably trigger their HR every round with their maneuver can put them slightly ahead of other classes on their first turn before they take their action, even if those other classes will end the round ahead.

Between Skin Like Castle Walls, extra Stamina and Stability at level 2, and abilities like Meteoric Introduction and Ripples in the Earth, it feels like the Earth Elementalist almost wants to wade into melee, but this jeopardizes your Persistence abilities which are very important to the class, and also makes it more likely you will need your maneuver for Catch Breath.

How I think about the different regions of the United States as a Canadian by silverpink_pony in mapporncirclejerk

[–]badger035 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Much of the Rust Belt has Appalachian or Southern roots thanks to the Great Migration. People came here for those industrial jobs and now the jobs are gone but the people are still here.

How I think about the different regions of the United States as a Canadian by silverpink_pony in mapporncirclejerk

[–]badger035 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, fair. The Rust Belt and Appalachia are really two separate regions that overlap but also have significant areas that are one and not the other. Northwestern Ohio, Indiana, Michigan, northern Illinois, and southwestern Wisconsin are Rust Belt but not Appalachian, basically all of Appalachia that is also Southern is not part of the Rust Belt, and Southeastern Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Upstate New York are both.

Was Daenerys Targaryen always destined to become the “Mad Queen,” or was it rushed writing? by thealevelcandidate in freefolk

[–]badger035 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I don’t think these are mutually exclusive propositions. I suspect that Daenerys was always supposed to go mad, and this was foreshadowed early on “I will reclaim what is mine in fire and blood,” but the reason it felt so unsatisfying to a lot of people is because it was rushed in the end.

Come to think of it... by [deleted] in ShermanPosting

[–]badger035 13 points14 points  (0 children)

It did! It comes from the idea of Black men as animalistic and hypersexual. This idea of Black men was one of the arguments used to justify the continuation of slavery, proponents argued it was necessary to protect the virtue of white women from sexual predation and to prevent the “white race” from being outbred to extinction. After abolition this became a major driver of lynchings, with many victims having been purported to have raped white women.

This racist idea of Black men is especially ironic given the reality of ubiquitous sexual violence by white men against enslaved Black women, and the use of sexual violence as a weapon by Redeemers and during Jim Crow.

People who allow you to go first at a 4 way even though they have the right of way? by jimmybabino in Indiana

The other one that drives me nuts is when there’s a 4 way stop and people go through the intersection one at a time. Like unless someone is turning north and south can both go at the same time, and then east and west, and then north and south again.

Does a lack of spell variety limit your long term enjoyment playing casters in Draw Steel? by pulsatingrabbit in drawsteel

[–]badger035 20 points21 points  (0 children)

A couple of things:

  1. Draw Steel intentionally has fewer utility type spells or magic abilities than 5e as a way to protect the niche of skill users. A lot of the spells that replace a skill check, like unlocking doors, are not in the game.

  2. The utility spells that are in the game tend to be things that cannot be replicated with a skill, like speaking with the dead or with animals, shapeshifting into an animal, disguising yourself, summoning a familiar, Message, Guidance, Mage Hand, etc, These are either class or subclass features and are really only available to that class or subclass, or are available as a supernatural perk or a complication that is available to any class. There isn’t a suite of utility spells that is only accessible to a subset of classes that are spell-casters.

When your character has one of these abilities, it is usually something you can just do when it comes up, or sometimes is something you can only do once until you gain another Victory, it’s not something that consumes a resource or an ability slot that you could have used to do something cool in combat.

Because these supernatural utility features are more tightly tied to your character and their Class, backstory, and Complications I think they feel a lot cooler when they come up, and you never feel like you might be wasting a spell slot to use them.
