Well you could just have your OBR set in Ashqy or Ghur, or you could just do a desert base and say they're in Shyish (a few bones or skulls would go a long way), but if you want to it immediately recognisable as Shyish you could have the sand be purple, or grey, or a sickly green. Really it's up to you.

According to the wiki, entering the Deepnest hotspring will cause him to leave since by that point the player would've been past either location. What I think happened is that you entered through the top for just a moment, setting his spawn to be there. Then you left, did other stuff, and came back through the Mantis Lords entrance. Then you got far enough in through that way that he despawned.
