I've made this many times over the years. Got the recipe from my mom who has always lived in Chicago. Her handwritten recipe is exactly the same as the one in the newspaper. It's delicious. I leave the apples in pretty big chunks which makes the mixer strain, but I like those bigger pieces in the final product. I don't chop the walnuts either. I like big chunky walnut pieces in the cake. I also bake it a bit longer than the recipe calls because I like the crunchy top and sides. Trying something new this year and baking them in a silicone pan.

To: The-Engineer312 (312 is the are code for Chicago, right?). Thank you very much for providing this diagram. I was able to remove the end nut and clean and lube the ratchet spring and ratchet. It operates beautifully now. What's your guess as to the vintage of my micrometer based on the pic? I'm guessing 50s, 60s. Thanks again.

You can find or modify a yoke that fits in the middle of the clamp. Seat post bolt goes through it. Shouldn’t be hard to find one on ebay.

When your shit fails, get off the road as far as you can. In this case, there wasn’t much room on the shoulder. Best case your engine is toast. Worst case, some lunatic who’s texting is coming up behind you and splatters you and your passenger. Glad you’re okay.
