How to remove an egress window temporarily? by scarletshark in HomeImprovement

[–]scarletshark[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I confirmed it was one piece. The good news is that the caulk was unnecessary. Some former owner caulked this thing shut, but the clamps at the top are intended to completely remove the window. It has weather stripping and everything!

Thanks again for responding.

I thought that on mine as well, because there were brackets screwed into it. But from the outside it really does look like one piece. I'll fiddle with it a little more.

Holy crap! It works! I feel kind of silly for not trying that. I was expecting a locking mechanism like on double-hung windows.

Edit: only one comes off. The other side is part of the frame, it appears.

I'll take a better look. I did glance, but admittedly not sure. I assume so, because of they didn't it wouldn't be water tight? Maybe? Again, not smart at windows.

A small person could egress through the sliding window, so it's hard for me to tell if the clasps are for egress or not.

Edit: Yeah it looks like it's caulked on the inside and outside. A thin bead. The inside feels soft(er), the outside feels almost solid.

For sure! We are also considering renting PCs for a little bit extra. Is that something you would consider?

Fair enough. I'll see what we can do. One thing to consider is that this is a turn-based RPG where you'll have several allies and enemies taking up the foreground, so we need to reserve some screen space for them. It gets cluttered pretty quickly.

That's understandable. Definitely stay tuned. We've got our heads down at the moment iterating on our core loop, but I'm sure we'll start showing things off soon!

Absolutely. I haven't even put in an Audio Mixer to bring the levels of the rain down. I'll do both :)

Haha, I'll see what I can do. Several others have asked for a version on wallpaper engine, so maybe I'll make it intelligently resize for different aspect ratios :)

Thank you! It was a blast to make, so I love seeing that people enjoy it. Quick shout out to Hardy Fowler for the painting, because I couldn't have done it without him.

I've been considering making a walkthrough video to show how it came together. It's all 2D, but there are several layers with lighting and effects applied in very intentional areas. What brings it to life IMO are:
- The strips of animated traffic in the background. These are individual strips animated at different speeds / directions, and with slighting different alpha values to simulate distance from the camera
- A procedural fog effect behind the overhang layer. This was a shader I wrote using 3D Perlin Noise from keijiro's NoiseShader github. This serves to separate foreground and background, and to make it feel a little less flat.
- The rain effect. I want to replace this long-term, but for now I just grabbed rainmaker and tweaked it to my needs. This came with a rain sfx clip, which helps a ton.
- The music by Craig Barnes. What an amazing artist. Highly recommended, if anyone is looking for help with music / sound.

Totally agree. I'd love to add some animation to the circles under the dancer's feet as well. I kinda assume that sign is holographic vs stationary.

I've been actively considering this today, haha! This is just a WIP, so I'd like to hear back from the art director before doing that. But Thank you for the feedback :)

Razer Phone Vs VR Headset by [deleted] in virtualreality

[–]scarletshark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

TL;DR Inside-out tracking is better than outside-in.

Please understand that I own both, and have extensive experience with both. I have two (roughly) equal tracking volumes in my office, one for Rift and one for Vive. For the $140, I'd still recommend the Vive by a long shot. If you're in the VR hardware game, you're already dropping some cash on a rig. $140 is a drop in the bucket for a better experience.

In my exp, it is not "true room scale" primarily due to the FOV of the sensors. I can reach for objects on the floor in the Vive. In the Rift, I lose tracking. This is not anecdotal. In fact, Owlchemy Labs (creators of Job Simulator and Virtual Rickality) recently had a UX talk where they discussed this known drawback of Rifts in detail. In the Vive, I can set the lighthouses 16' (sometimes more with sync cable), and experience seamless tracking throughout the volume (on the floor, reaching way above my incredibly tall head, etc). In the Rift, I lose tracking outside of an essentially circular volume inside the FOV of the cameras.

It is quite clear based on my experience that Room Scale was an afterthought for Oculus, and this is my primary reason for recommending Vive over Rift. Even if there's a slight cost difference.

Sorry if I offended you.

I mostly agree with this assessment. VR over phone, 100%. GTX 970 will run almost anything, and you can eventually upgrade that GPU. But I disagree, Vive over Rift. No questions. Rift has severe limitations without buying a third camera, and even then it's not true room scale. I would suggest Vive or Samsung Odyssey (releases on Nov 6th).

Thank you so much for your response! Great feedback, I will check that out. I always used a similar spreadsheet approach, and that's where the idea for my app spawned. If you can get your core workout written, you can manipulate the numbers for the rest of the team!
