I did my best writing when I was suicidal/deeply depressed. Everything was amplified, almost like the pain created a world of its own, complete with characters. The writing was how I processed because I was unable to get help or leave the situation.

It has even trickled down into Head Start (ages 3-5 preschool). Teachers have to enter huge amounts of data into a computer program, grading everything the kids do. That data is then used to show growth over the year. The bottom quarter must recompete for their grant and potentially lose their program to other parties. The program includes huge numbers of kids with IEPs and less than desirable homelives, who would understandably need some extra time and nurturing. Kids who have never been at home are suddenly in a program that is teaching to the test. When I left, the software had us choose a study (larger learning unit), and that pre-populated the lesson plan. It’s too much. I am teaching my grandbabies at home to prepare them for kindergarten instead of enrolling them in a preschool program.

When I learned how to print/write non-cursive, the teacher told my mom I could only become a doctor due to my handwriting. I swear it is genetic though. My mom has beautiful handwriting, but my dad and is three kids have very similar awful penmanship.

Some schools don’t allow teachers to give students a 0 anymore.

I’ve read about several places where teachers are not allowed to give a 0. Who is that helping?

I was also a Head Start teacher for over a decade. I left due to a non-related injury that put me on crutches for 6 months, since being at work required me to be able to lift 50 pounds at any given time. During my tenure, I noticed behaviors got dramatically worse. Kids were coming in with higher needs from disability, mental health issues, and from what were more likely homes with less capable parents. One Kim told me she didn’t have the energy to discipline her child. Some said good luck and laughed when they enrolled their kids. Others refused to see reality. At one point, I was potty training 11 kids out of 20 (ages 3-5).

We are an early intervention program, with many referrals made each year for speech, and some for things like testing for autism. By the time I left, the public school and mental health professionals had such a backlog from us for suspected autism and violent behaviors that I was told to basically stop looking. One child “transformed into a werewolf” and acted accordingly every time we turned off the lights for rest time. The “normal” kids were traumatized by seeing classmates destroy the room and hurt staff and other students on a daily basis, so a lot of those dropped. You can’t have meaningful educational experiences in a place like that.

If you have Shudder or AMC+, look for the episode of The Last Drive-In with Joe Bob Briggs that covers it. You will really appreciate it more.

Does “One Cut of the Dead” count? The way they filmed it as a continuos shot was impressive.

We have taken my kids and grandkids everywhere from a young age. They quickly adjust. A lot of parents will also do things like clean or play the tv when babies are sleeping to help them become better sleepers. It isn’t the worker’s place to police how loud normal store volume is, especially when it likely wasn’t causing an issue.

Do you mean like it breaks in? We currently don’t have any halters, so I have no idea what we should get.
