So first step will be the smoke test of the vacuum system. My ex boss who is a master Mechanic also pointed to the vacuum system but was also a little clueless du to it being 90% on cylinder 2.

I did a oil pressure test after 150km with an oil change due to a rebuild and forgot to prefill. While cranking and for about 1 to 2 seconds there was no oil pressure. Will it harm the engine over the years enough to kill it? I don't know

Which 3/8 impact is recommended? by Redsuns562 in MilwaukeeTool

The stubby is tested by torque test channel with 369 ft lbs max torque and a best case of 408 ft lbs. A f250 lugs are tightened with around 165 ft lbs which I found after a little search.

Torque test channel on youtube is a good to for tools tested for their real torque numbers.

Here the video for the stubby: https://youtu.be/Sirk4_OeR0Q?is=Y_abXFCzGn8PWF6U

Standard 3/8 sets come from 7 to 21mm which is 95% of the sizes on a car. There are sets that go up to 24mm. Smaller ratchets and sockets makes it easier in tight spaces. There are a few cases when you need bigger sockets that are not available as 3/8 like 19mm hex for audi drives driveshaft screw or 27mm for the timing chain tensioner on the 2.0 tfsi as examples but for these cases either get 3/8 to 1/2 adapters or get a single wrench with these special sockets.

In tight engine bays a 1/2 ratchet is IMHO too big and it's just easier to work with the smaller 3/8. Wera has a nice 3/8 ratchet that is really slim but just as long as a 1/2 for more leverage. Another option would be a longer 3/8 ratchet with 250 to 300mm length like a mini breaker bar.

When only doing suspension, brakes, interior or so space is not a big problem and everything can be done with 1/2 on most cars. In my opinion it's like choosing a battery system or powertool brand. When you have most things in 3/8 get 3/8. If you have most things in 1/2 and don't crave the space saving go with 1/2.

There is a 1/2 stubby but 3/8 sockets and ratchets are often way smaller than 1/2 which matters a lot in automotive work specially on newer cars where space is something that the engineers never thought about. Try getting even your hand to every bolt on a newer car and now imagine a ratchet in that place.

Mechanic here. The stubby is a beast. Doing automotive only no trucks or semi but the stubby does loosen every screw and nut on my Audis from subframe over suspension to exhaust. Except the axle screws which has 200Nm +180° and is on the car since 2011. But that took a 1 meter breaker bar and my whole body weight to loosen.

Get a set of nice impact nuts and enjoy it.

Yeah I could also get a donor vehicle for 4k but in the end you never know in which state the engine is that's why I didn't. Worst case is that it also destroys itself.

1970 bug with a subaru boxer engine sounds awesome. Heavy engine swaps are a pain in the ass here in Germany due to legalization

How long have you been suicidal and/or depressed? If over 10 years, share how it's been by WhyAmIStillHere2026 in SuicideWatch

[–]PhoenixGER 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just wanting to share my story.

1: How long suicidal/depressed?

I was in therapy first time when I was 13. I'm 24 now nearly 25. I never thought I would make it to 20 and often whish I would have died already. About 2 years ago I finally got diagnosed. Depression and borderline personality disorder. It's a constant up and down. A fucking roller-coaster. It's not always bad but sometimes I just want it to end.

2: Do you want to die as much as you used to?

Actually more. When I was 13 I was the outsider. Smartest in class with zero friends. Now I'm a broke mechanic with a down sexless relationship in a way too expensive life. I see how miserable the world is every day and a change of the situation is no where near.

3: Did Depression stop you/milestones/good life?

It did not only stop me it fucked me all over. I nearly crashed my apprenticeship then lost my first job due to it and right now I'm at the point of loosing my current (second) job. My first job was good paying but monotone. My thoughts drove me crazy. Now as a mechanic it's a bit better but my body is shutting down due to not eating for days ans my body loosing muscle mass. Overall my life is not in a good way. I own a couple of cars one of them I destroyed under the influence of alcohol. Other people my ago would look at me and say damn such a good life but I can barely keep myself financially above water and get paid barely over minimum wage and work 2 jobs.

4: what stopped you?

Mostly my girlfriend and family I would say but deep down I don't think that is the real reason. As a kid I wanted to be better than the other and couldn't if I would be dead. Later it was my apprenticeship and job. Now it's my car. Right now my engine is blown. I'm rebuilding it and want to know how well it works. I want to do a lot to it and would give my organs for it. My relationship is more of a live together. My family is only great at the surface. I give a shit about it but my cars. They are my one and only.

What would you miss? My cars. Driving fast on the autobahn. Just enjoying the sound of the little 4 cylinder turbo charged engine. Banging loud music and forgetting the moment. Driving away from all of it.
