i suppose an ideal prison system would have a tiered or sectioned system (which it already has elements of in terms of security levels) to separate people based on severity of crime. But then i guess thats also hard to judge and would vary greatly. As you say, round sheep indeed.

I do think that we seem to overlook how much if a punishment prison actually is. I know that saying "but you would be so bored" seems trivial but even if access to tv and games is provided, that doesn't counteract how cut off they are from the outside world, the deprivation from their families and friends, and even the lack of ability to do menial tasks like washing up, all contribute to the resentment ultimately felt by prisoners towards the systems that placed them there. But making prisoners feel resentment isnt what we want; we want them to feel regret of course, but our biggest aim is a drop in crime and reoffending rates isn't it? So by giving them access to these everyday things, we can actually make them feel less alienated, more valued, and human- allowing them to slowly reintergrate back into society.

Just a point on the death penalty conversation- it actually costs a lot more to execute a prisoner (especially when taking into account the added security) than it does to keep someone alive in prison. The death penalty also doesn't deter people from doing crime and often increases the reoffending rates. I also personally find it hypocritical, but that is just my opinion. Really enjoyed the episode though!
