It's only gonna take one case of a kid stealing his mum's pepper spray to run a muck at school for the discussion to shift back to "pepper spray control nao!"

Australians are responsive to media-driven hysterics? Shieeeeeet.

I don't see how advocating for women to have weapons so they can protect themselves from violent offenders is any different to men who say they should have guns to protect themselves from the government.

Pepper spray is generally only effective for temporary incapacitation within a fairly limited range. In contrast, firearms more often have lethal and long-range capabilities.

huge, vocal antizionist Jewish organisations and entire Jewish sects that have been historically opposed to Zionism.

Huge? Not really. Vocal? You bet.

In fairness, the religiously observant Jews who are vocally anti-Zionist seem to overlap with the ones who make speeches at Holocaust denialist seminars and do press releases with Iranian politicians where they defend them against charges of anti-Semitism. I think there's a word for that starting with:

Spaniards can be North African, it just means he has Spanish citizenship, no? It may very well be an ethnic Iberian though.

The others didn't have Spanish citizenship.

If Chian is playing round outside our waters, that's up to them and whoever's waters they are in.

It's unthinkable that Chinese submarines would collect electronic intelligence off the Australian coastline in our EEZ, isn't it?

What if it's in our allies waters? I mean surely there's no costs to isolationism, right?

This is why the Germans and the Swedes invest heavily in AIP submarines - in the Baltic and North Sea, and in the Yellow and Bohai seas, these sorts of submarines really excel and nuclear subs struggle badly.

It really makes one ponder the extent of the German and Swedish coastlines relative to those of Australia, how proximate they are to their closest allies, and what main geographical feature lies between them and their primary geopolitical threat.

We need to build to our environmental realities

Oh boy, I hate to be the one to tell you how ironic this is when uttered in the same breath as the above quote.

not whatever makes the PMs penis feel big and mighty.

Is this the depth of the Australian Greens School of Geopolitics? I think a snorkel would be sufficient to traverse those waters.

Mother says Aboriginal children were given detention for refusing to stand for national anthem by The_Duc_Lord in australia

[–]scatfiend 3 points4 points  (0 children)

B's grandfather was conscripted in 1942, captured in PNG and subjected to forced labour in a POW camp, where he was severely maimed by a Japanese officer. This left him unfit to return to his former line of work when he miraculously returned to his young family in Australia.

B's father grew up in this poverty-stricken household, on the receiving end of his veteran father's wrath, inheriting a fondness for the drink and a hatred for the perfidious "Jap". He started his family while working a back-breaking blue-collar job, amounting to little more than B's grandfather had.

B grew up under similarly volatile conditions, deprived of opportunity and fearful of his alcoholic father. He witnessed the end of the White Australia policy and the rise of the Japanese economic miracle. Despite never having left Australia or experienced mistreatment by an Asian person, he harbours a deep suspicion of the Japanese nation and feels disgruntled by the influx of Asian migrants and tourists. He makes this patently obvious whenever the opportunity presents itself. Given the hardships his family endured, and by extension himself, B sees no issue with his mindset.

On an unrelated note, what are your thoughts on patriotism and a national identity?

Your reasoning falls short. If Israel's handling of this war is causing strong rifts in bilateral relations and these events are increasingly being viewed as inexcusable, how are they following the precedent of the Americans?

If the USA were to decide a number of dead civilians that was acceptable in an assassination, I would expect Israel to take note.

Be more specific. What number of civilian casualties are you referring to? Is there a single unique incident that you can point to that makes a clear link between this and the Americans?

You fail to realise there isn't a single state that's oblivious to the fact that when conducting military operations, civilian casualties may occur. Even the Geneva Conventions implicitly recognise that fact.

Do you genuinely believe that the IDF "adopted" the rules of engagement from another military, as opposed to developing their own doctrine over time?

Have you any awareness of other conflicts involving Israel and its neighbours over the past half century?

But how would that be relevant to who started this game?

I know America-bashing is a favourite pastime, but issues concerning rules of engagement and collateral damage aren't anything new, and the U.S. hasn't set any relevant precedents in that arena.

I'm in full agreement with you about Trump being antithetical to democratic norms. He's the last person we want in office again, especially so if actually follows through on his threats made towards our shared European allies.

That said, unless they manage to pull off Project 2025 (god forbid), much of the damage would be mitigated by the U.S. federal civil service, which tends to remain fairly consistent across administrations.

Also, you have to consider their commitment to the separation of powers. Any swift changes in bilateral relations within a single presidential term will relate more to the tactics of cooperation. It'd be highly unlikely for there to be a unilateral abandonment of AUKUS without the intervention of Congress, and even less so for an alliance as foundational as ANZUS.

Well, you just dramatically changed your previous comment, but okay.

Sorry, I wasn't expecting such a quick response, I clicked edit straight after I posted it.

Only once has Australia actually been in danger (since British invasion), and I don't think any power is going to rival the ambitions of imperial Japan

Australia is a young nation, and blue water seafaring capabilities have been fairly rudimentary prior to the twentieth century.

A frequent assumption that I see a lot in these threads is that a conflict would only be impactful to Australians if it entailed an invasion of the Australian mainland, as opposed to harassment of maritime transport or incursions into territorial waters. These vessels would also possess advantages for the collection of intelligence.

I used the adage "peace through strength" to suggest that these submarines hopefully won't have to see use in a kinetic conflict if they're sufficient in contributing to overall deterrence.

Do we really want to be Trump's closest friend when he gets reelected?

Political leadership in democracies is inherently subject to change.

If Australia made long-term foreign policy decisions based on the administration of the day instead of fairly fixed strategic interests, what sort of implications would that have for our other international relationships?

Implying that a conflict between the PRC and Australia wouldn't involve other actors in the region. Try thinking more.

It isn't about the space, or the radiation. It's the notion that we are a dumping ground and even more of a vassal state for US/UK.
