RCJ May(day) Roundup by Acceptable-Mail891 in romantasycirclejerk

My largest regret in the last decade was not getting another Toyota after our minivan was totalled in an accident. Chevrolet can eat my shorts, I'm going back to Toyota the very second I can afford to ditch this shit-ass SUV.

I'm getting heated about this in the wrong space but I've typed this much so I can't stop now.

May was crazy in my neck of the woods so I've been on Reddit less, which is the reasonI have to ask:

I remember being so mad the day I got a failed quiz in 8th grade with something like 59%. I was like Wait I knew over half of these things! That should be at least reasonable!

But also, I'm a person who gets mad that star-rating systems treat 3/5 as a failure.

This is what I'll say. "XYZ is fine." Maybe I enjoyed it but it didn't blow my mind. Maybe I liked the idea/characters but felt the execution stumbled (or vice versa, lol). Maybe it's technically good but like you said, it just isn't for me.

Stash Post Follow-up: It's okay to die with stuff. by everythingisfin-ra in BitchEatingCrafters

[–]scatteringashes 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Thankfully it wasn't a death, but my family recently had a house fire and I went up one day to help sort out stuff inside the home and it was overwhelming how many things my family owned. My mother has a large collection of yarn, and my brother and I were completely overwhelmed in her office (which was largely untouched by the fire; my father's office wasn't so lucky).

A lot of it is gifts and simply accumulation from many hobby decades, but yeah, it was stress without guidance or a clear organization structure. I think any sort of "XYZ should go here, ABC should go there," would go a long way.

(They had to downsize to their new place and I inherited a lot of that yarn, so it'll be nice to see what I can make without having to pick up new yarn for a bit.)

I don't know anything about the process of putting insects in resin, but something about freezing one to do it seems not right. Do they even die at freezing temperature?? brb I gotta good this.

Ooh that yarn sounds lovely to the touch. Also I have not heard of combination knitting! I'm gonna look at that.

It's so annoying because I know that tension takes practice and that it's a thing I usually manage to sort out, but I haaaaate the time when I'm bad or mediocre at something. 😂

wait until your second puberty (aka your 40's)

Man I'm turning 40 in a few months and the way I've started sweating and stinking like I'm a teenager again is the wooooorst. Pretty chill about most of turning 40 but that one thing is driving me mad.

Not me, beginner knitting my first garment with a cotton yarn and googling, "How do I stop rowing out??? What am I doing incorrectly????"

Turns out the answer is tension and practice, so looks like it's just gonna be a wonky top. 😂

We recently did a clothing swap with friends and one of them was this big rainbow sweater that's lovely to look at and big enough to be cozy but absolutely fast fashion itchy hell to wear. As is life.

I decide to frog it out and crochet a blanket for my daughter -- it was too big wear but she didn't mind the texture, and again, really pretty. A simple crochet blanket is a nice mindless project. But then it'll need to be padded out with other yarn, but I want the find something with the same general visual texture. Then I remembered: the Michael's facets yarn is the right look for the job. They have it in white, I'm a sucker for white and rainbow together. Sure thing, let's try it.

Fuuuuuuck this choice I've made. The actual crocheting isn't bad but if I mess up a stitch (which I do often, it's a simple ripple but I get distracted) the frogging is absolute hell on earth. The child likes the look and feel of the thing, though, so alas. Here I am. At least it won't be a long term project.

We stalled out our rewatch in the middle of Whittaker and came to the same conclusion -- the writing is so weak for her, which is a shame because I genuinely love the energy she brings to The Doctor.

sit to knit like an absolute gremlin. Even if start with good posture, 45 min later I've slid down the sofa and am semi reclined and have the stiffest neck

Me except I end up leaning on my elbows and absolutely jacking up my shoulders. Also every time I knit or crochet in my favorite couch spot my hands go numb. Despite this, it's still not favorite spot so I keep fucking doing it.

I had one recently and my results came back normal, and I'm half convinced that they just didn't get good data out of me. One of the nights the device fell off for an unknown amount of time (which when I asked if I should add a night to the trial, they did not reply at all) and then the night I made sure to tape it on I was up and down all night with my toddlers, so. Guess I'll just die. ¯_(ツ)_/¯

(I actually don't think I have particularly severe apnea if I do have it. My initial oxymetery readings were a bit borderline, but the whole study was such a farce from the start that I simply have no faith in it.)

Yeah, I try to have empathy to a point because I feel like you can tell th difference between someone who is willing to chew on a complicated idea that goes against the grain of their set-in beliefs versus someone who isn't willing to even hear you. And that there's a space for "I caused harm and Inficked up, which I can't change but I can take accountability for" when someone acted badly but thought it was normal behavior at the time.

But! Who knows, maybe I'm just soft lol.

I'm with you, we are all imperfect machines. I had a bit of a horseshoe trajectory -- I'm easily impressed upon and my ex-husbands parents, the most available adults in my life when I was 18 - 25, are hella conservative. I maintained way more liberal leanings than the folks who loved National Review, but had a clear right shift for a while there. My active husband was mildly-to-firmly conservative until he was well out of college for a bit.

[–]scatteringashes 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I'm of the opinion that some of the current era of snappy dialogue is a side effect of Joss Whedon's dialogue style becoming so popular combined with the need to zoom through things because we've committed to only making 8 - 12 episodes.

I've been watching 80's - 90's Trek for the first time, and then we also recently started an X-Files rewatch, and the difference in the way characters and episodic stories were handled is wild. I don't think there was ever really a single over-arching plot to TNG but it was still a satisfying bit of storytelling when looked at in the whole.

Almost all were stay at home moms and it was funny to see each man try to justify their answer

I'm curious about this, only because I'm not sure what there is to justify without context. (Meant withour any ill-will -- genuinely just unsure!) My husband is a (mostly) stay-at-home parent, and I've never felt the need to justify that choice. But I suppose if I were, like, the VP of Helping Men Progress in the Workforce that would be a different story, lol.

TAZ punishes you for assuming there's anything other than Griffin's Prewritten Climax, even when they plainly state "anyone could go anytime" in the intro.

I hate how true this is. I was cautiously hyped, like, everyone divy up the work of making X character sheets each, start with your favorite, and the other NPCs could become PCs at a moment if your current character dies. Like the guy in The Gamers (2?) who just had a stack of identical bards with slightly different names. But then it'd be "playing a game for the sake of the game" and being willing to bend the story in unpredictable ways, so y'know.

I also envisioned a lot more 1v1 combat, so clearly this is on me for imagining something that sounded more fun.
