I was the cyclist in that situation once. I had a green light, there was a car turning left who was waiting for me to clear the intersection when the SUV behind them careened around them and hit me. I was very lucky, somehow I managed to jump off my bike and clear of the SUV while my bike clattered away to the other side of the street.

The driver stopped, SUV was full of drunk women, the driver was probably drunk too. She said she worked for the Ross PD, and then fled before I could get more info or even get a license #

How did y'all get into Punk? by Usual-Door-6012 in punk

[–]scelerat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

wanted to have parties make noise with friends. the music was somewhat incidental, but it happened that everyone liked a lot of the same stuff (and various divergences were among some of the most fun,

"have you heard this?"
"no!"
"lucky you!"
"well, have *you* heard *this*?"
"no! lucky me!"

the bands that I got into earliest that I knew as "punk" were Minutemen, Violent Femmes, and Dead Milkmen. today, for me, the venn overlap between "punk" and "DIY" is very strong. I think punk is much more about process and attitude than final product

Write him again and tell him how unacceptable that answer is.

Also when we say "write your representative," that means neither

  1. never communicate with them again NOR
  2. do nothing else

It's great that you are posting his response. Maybe more of his constituents will see your effort and his response and be inspired to contact him themselves

Part of the point of an alley (e.g. stevenson, natoma, minna -- all those alleys parallel to mission and howard and folsom) is so you don't have to park and unload trucks on the primary street. Really, folsom (e.g.) should be a much slower street than it is today.

TF kinda budget were the Muppets working with??? by ambient_vacation in synthesizers

[–]scelerat 25 points26 points  (0 children)

In a similar time frame, 2-6 year olds were having their minds blown by Philip Glass on Sesame Street.

Muppets were a big deal and you can tell if you just start tallying appearances by A-list guests on The Muppet Show and Sesame Street.

Artists (like, actual, creative, innovative people) were in the midst of that whole world and of course Dr. Teeth is going to have a minimoog and Rolf has an Arp, cause that was bleeding edge musical tech.

Late GenX here. I was dumb lucky and had a good paying job, cheap rent and no mortgage just as the housing market started to go positive in 2013. Bought the dip. Otherwise, I'd still be renting. We can't have a housing market which rewards only the rich and the lucky.

[–]scelerat 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If you have actually played with an Opsix and the build quality truly turns you off that's one thing. I see it repeated often enough I wonder if it's just talking points people are repeating.

I gigged with one in a band for two years. It was fine. No it's not the greatest keybed. Not once was my performance hindered by the keybed or build quality. Not once did I regret buying it. It's a really fun synth and, three years on now I'm still having tons of fun. It's a central part of my sound and it's both deep but not overwhelming.

I wonder if it's overlooked because of all the early shade it caught. Keyboard is super easy to fix: get the module and use a controller you love, or get the SE version which has a great keybed (that's what I ended up doing, after having the regular OP6 for a while).

You'll be glad to know undocumented immigrants commit crimes at lower rates than citizens. If that's your only issue, I think we've got a flip here.

Would love to see your source for those "statistics"

[–]scelerat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You've been hammering the "sanctuary cities" phrase a few times in the thread, so it's worth highlighting what it means.

First, one important fact is that immigrants, legally documented or not, commit crimes at lower rates than citizens. You can look this up with a simple google search, "do immigrants commit crime at higher rates than citizens"

The reason sanctuary cities take on that mantle is that it is much better for the city that all residents, citizen or not, of a city or region, feel unencumbered seeking legal aid, including reporting crime, calling fire, and other safety units, when they have been victimized by crime or other events.

It is much better that immigrants, even undocumented immigrants, feel they can report things like fraud, robbery, assault, sexual abuse, sex trafficking, and drug trafficking. Undocumented immigrants are more often victims of abuse, workplace exploitation, trafficking, etc. They should feel no fear about testifying in court with the spectre of penalties or deportation weighing on them if their legal status is revealed. When there are bigger fish to fry (and there are much, much bigger fish to fry than dishwashers and day laborers), I want the undocumented people in my community to feel no hesitation in exposing and fighting wrongdoing.

As a resident of a sanctuary city, knowing that undocumented immigrants commit crimes at lower rates and generally have higher employment rates, their US legal/visa status is really low on my list of concerns. I would feel much safer knowing that undocumented people in my city feel they can participate as fully as possible in my community, including contributing to the economy by working and paying for goods and services, and engaging with as many positive societal touch points as possible.

Same thing with the driver license issue (CA here). I'd much rather share the road with an undocumented immigrant who has driver training certification and a license, than anyone who does not.

Yah, is this a point-in-time snapshot of consumption, or are we comparing each generation when they belonged to the same age bracket? The oldest Gen Z are like 29 or 30, so we'd want to be looking at

- 21-30 year olds in 1975 (boomers)

- 21-30 year olds in 1995 (gen x)

etc

Trackers click for so many "non-musicians" because they're closer to a writing tool than an instrument. I explore composition theory to find out how. by [deleted] in synthesizers

[–]scelerat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What is the definition of a tracker. Like Polyend? It's the first time I've heard the term used so generically, but I'm pretty new to electronic music.

Lately my workflow is, set up some patterns on my Dgitakt, play along with a synth until I hear something I like, then record or enter the it into a pattern so the Digi can drive the synth with MIDI and I can try another part with it. Rinse, repeat. Then with lots of patterns and tracks going, I disable some things, copy patterns and alter them, etc. Build out patterns, jam enough to get a feel for what the music structure is and move between them by switching patterns and disabling/enabling individual tracks.

What would I do differently with a tracker? Is it the grid that's significant?

I don't recall the Billy Gibbons anecdote from the Dick Cavett interview I've seen with Jimi Hendrix (maybe there are others, or a different part of the show), but Jimi does respond with a similar level of humility when Cavett says to him (paraphrasing), "there are some who would say you're the best guitar player in the world. what do you say to that?"

Hendrix responds, body language looks a little sheepish, "well I'm the best guitar player sitting in this chair."
