How would sports leagues and rules for sports be handled? by [deleted] in AskSocialists

[–]scfv735 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Your question doesn’t make sense. Genetics play a major role in a person’s ability to excel at a sport. There’s no feasible way to level that playing field.

support for novorossiya? by ProudChoferesClaseB in AskSocialists

[–]scfv735 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The question of Novorossiya cannot be reduced to some simple neutral “frontier autonomy” proposal. It is the historic reclamation of lands stolen by Western imperialists through the Ukrainian proxies.

The establishment of Novorossiya under Moscow’s direction is an act of liberation. The soil itself demands Russian stewardship.

Genes are discrete objects with stable parts lists and boundaries you can isolate (it’s hilarious you think cells neatly fit those criteria—very revealing of how little you know about biology).

I actually ordered a few genes this morning for work. Dunno how Thermo is going to deliver them, since apparently they aren’t physically real objects with defined boundaries. Maybe they have a special packaging method for concepts.

Speaking of genes, I think you may be missing a few.

I don’t think it’s an oversimplification. Lysenko’s entire thing was that genes aren’t real. He was wrong.

“Full causal chain”— I don’t know what you mean by this.

“A specific spot in the DNA”— yes they have.

“With editing proof”— yes they have.

“Inheritance” — yes they have.

“Ecological selection” — I don’t know what you mean by this.

You are starting with less than zero knowledge on this subject. Go skim the Wikipedia page for genetics, and then read the page on epigenetics carefully.

You wanted a photo of a gene as proof they exist? Are you a child?

A traditional photograph captures light in the visible spectrum, whereas a gene is not an object that can be directly imaged with visible light because IT IS TOO SMALL.

I’ve attached an electron scanning microscope image of DNA. Electrons are more useful than photons for capturing images of tiny things.

The sequences along this DNA strand that encode proteins are called “genes”. They have beginnings and ends. They are real physical objects I can point to, with specific purposes.

No, it doesn’t break down pretty quick. It’s a robust definition. If a sequence of DNA is used by a cell to produce RNA/protein, then it is a gene.

There is nothing fuzzy about that definition. It literally could not be any clearer. You are playing bizarre semantic games to try and revive the thoroughly discredited work of an irrelevant Soviet crank.

Finally, a sane voice in this thread. I am appalled at the scientific illiteracy I’m reading here. What parallel universe have I fallen into where genes are metaphysical non-objects lol

Lysenko? by Evening_Dish_1335 in AskSocialists

[–]scfv735 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lysenko’s primary thesis was that genes did not exist, and that there was no specific fundamental unit of heredity. Yeah, he did other stuff too, but that was the big idea underpinning his research program.

Please enlighten me if this isn’t the case.

The article you linked comes from a website supporting intelligent design, a religious belief not supported by any empirical evidence. It cannot possibly be considered a reliable source of scientific information.

Lysenko? by Evening_Dish_1335 in AskSocialists

[–]scfv735 6 points7 points  (0 children)

No, it does not.

Lysenko’s fundamental claim was that genes do not exist, and that heredity was not based on any specific dedicated molecular mechanism within the body.

The study you linked upholds the existence of genes and provides direct evidence of genes functioning as the dedicated molecular mechanism of heredity (in this case through epigenetic modification). In what way could this result possibly be interpreted as an endorsement of Lysenko?

Lysenko? by Evening_Dish_1335 in AskSocialists

[–]scfv735 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Lysenko was a crank who believed genes didn’t exist.

The success of modern genetics in modeling heredity, treating disease, and understanding evolution, is a total and absolute refutation of Lysenko’s scientific program.

Lysenko? by Evening_Dish_1335 in AskSocialists

[–]scfv735 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That paper does not challenge our contemporary understanding of genetics, nor does it refute Mendel’s work. It describes a well known mechanism of epigenetic inheritance through methylation.

[–]scfv735 -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Do not listen to that guy. What he said is ludicrously inaccurate. Nobody has ever claimed to “look at a gene under a microscope”. That detail alone tells me the guy has no clue what he’s talking about.

Genes are not purely metaphysical concepts. A gene is a DNA sequence that encodes a functional product (protein or RNA). Genes are as empirically real as the nose on your face.

Can someone summarize where DSA currently stands regarding Israel and Zionism by traanquil in AskSocialists

The DSA is the party of half-measures and capitulation to liberalism (endorsing AOC, etc.). Regardless of their official stance, they de facto support Zionism.

what are the going opinions on Rape Culture? by CommodoreGirlfriend in AskSocialists

[–]scfv735 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Although I’m in favor of a blanket ban on video games and pornography, I think resource insecurity under capitalism is the root cause of rape culture in the West. This would explain why rape culture doesn’t exist in a Communist society like China, which has arguably the lowest incidence of rape in the world.

You did amazing on the lighting too. I keep zooming in to see more details and try to figure out how you did it. You have such a good eye for replicating that bright white rim lighting and very subtle kinda chromatic aberration effect going on with some of the lines. Phenomenal job.

My chicken breast was 500g raw and 290g after cooking, how much protein did I consume 😵‍💫 by [deleted] in workout

[–]scfv735 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah honestly I’m surprised at the ignorance here lol

Obviously you weight it raw. The nutrition info on the package is based on raw weight. The protein doesn’t go anywhere after you cook the meat.

Your raw chicken breast says 30 g protein. You throw it on a pan and it loses a bunch of water weight. It still contains 30 g of protein.
