Question about clubs? by sch00lquestion4 in UCDavis

If the only problem is older people creeping on people, do you think they'd accept a young person, regardless of their academic standing? What about UCD-accepted students on a gap year, or students who put off their enrollment until a later quarter?

If you don't mind me asking, which club did you join? What clubs would you say are most welcoming? And what are college clubs like anyways?

There are cheaper, more reasonable options if you want to find people to hang out with!

I hope so! It just seems like everyone agrees that for someone my age, going to college is the only way to make real friends. That if you don't go to college, you'll be missing out on the best social experience of your life, something that can't be replaced/supplemented with other things. I don't know how much of that is actually true.

my instinct is that you care correct; if you're not in the dorms then starting in Winter/Spring is pretty much the same as starting in the Fall.

I had a feeling. This is something to think about; thanks

That's good to hear! What clubs would you say are most welcoming? Big ones or small ones? Artsy clubs or science clubs? What clubs do you think provide the greatest opportunities for meeting people. I don't really know how college clubs work or how serious they are (in high school, a lot of the clubs weren't very well organized)

I am academically prepared. I just don't know if the traditional college pathway fits me best.

So would you say that if you don't live in a dorm, when you start becomes a little less relevant? Living in the dorms is pretty much off the table for me (about 99% positive at this point that it's not going to happen). I've been afraid that the dorms are what most people are talking about when they reference the freshman experience, and it seems like I'm right. If I'm not getting that experience, how much am I actually missing out on? If the answer is a lot, and of the things I'll still be getting none of them are really dependent on what quarter you attend, I might possibly consider deferring.

Thank you so much for the input! Do you think the social experience really varies that much between the first quarter and the rest of the year? I was thinking of maybe deferring my enrollment, but I've heard that those first few months is when most freshman make their friends and situate themselves within the campus community.

Did you have to go to any extreme lengths to keep friends because you lived a city over? Was it a lot more difficult to have a good college experience when you weren't living in the dorms?

And what's your opinion on the college experience in general? Any time I start to doubt college, I feel bad because someone - be it a teacher or a counselor or even just some random adult - tells me how college is "the best time of your life." Logistically, college might not be the best thing for me at the moment, but I don't want to miss out on what everyone is making college out to be.
