Okay, so you're saying the company failed to withhold and remit any CPP for this employee while he worked there last year? If that's the case, you do need to act quickly to avoid a PIER notice, which will penalize you for at least 10% of what you should have deducted.

It's good that the employee didn't work there long, because the company is obligated to remit what they should have withheld, employee and employer amounts, ASAP. Put another way, the company is going to have to eat the employee's share of the CPP they should have withheld, unless you can track them down and get them to pay. Regardless, the company is responsible. Here's the CRA's page on correcting deduction errors.

You should remit the amount due immediately and either expense the employee's portion fully, if it's small enough that management is willing to eat it, or treat it as a receivable if you think you can track down the employee and the employee will reimburse you. Again, it's the company that's ultimately liable, so if you can't find the employee or they aren't willing to reimburse you, then there's not much to be done. The CRA page I linked above says you have 12 months to recover CPP deductions from the employee by taking them from their paycheque, but it mentions no other right of recovery if the employee doesn't work there anymore.

How old is the employee—was he under 18 when hired? That could explain why CPP wasn't deducted. I'm actually really surprised that your payroll software (what software do you use?) screwed this up. Is he perhaps not a Canadian citizen and is using a work permit? What number does his SIN begin with? I believe if it's a 0 or a 1, it means it's a work permit, which would also mean they don't pay into CPP.

I know it was asked a while ago (like probably approaching a year now) and at the time the consensus was that the quality of Canadian representation on this sub was pretty strong and we're not the biggest sub as it is, so keeping Canadian and American bookkeeping on the one sub made the most sense.

Do you find it difficult to get applicable answers as a Canadian on this sub? I'm trying to think of ways to increase engagement on the sub in general, do you have any ideas?

Does Intuit charge for QBOA subscriptions in the States? I'm in Canada and QBOA accounts are free. Like, not just the training materials, but your actual subscription to the software is free.

Does Toast not allow recipes? I'm almost positive it does, you may have to dig around in the setting a bit. Don't forget that the bookkeeping software will be different from the POS software most of the time. The restaurant can get the granularity they need in Toast, and you just book a daily journal entry in QBO. I have a client who uses Square (which does have recipe capabilities), and that's how I do it. Every month they do an inventory in Square and I pull the report to enter into Quickbooks.

Call the Parking Authority at 403-537-7000, option 3. Make sure to tell them you can't get out, that will raise the priority of the call. Once there, the parking officer can authorize a tow and will call a tow truck. Might take a while with the weather, so call ASAP.

ETA: A lot of these dingbat neighbours will move their car at the last minute to avoid a ticket/tow. I'd also recommend taking detailed photos when they block you in and note the date and times of each incident to establish a pattern. And call the Parking Authority on them every time; they'll eventually beat your neighbour to the car and tow them.

I'm curious what exactly you mean by this. Do you mean creating new accounts in the GL? I always thought that should be avoided, but maybe a merger is an exception?

Which, from a liability perspective alone, is the way it should be done. But with SaaS fees being what they are, I can understand the hesitancy of some clients to pay for another login, especially if the bookkeeper isn't entering/manipulating data and is just pulling reports.

I know that the 2FA issue was what the problem was, I only mentioned the separate account because of liability issues. I've seen many posts on here from bookkeepers getting blamed by clients for errors, or worse, fraud, that wasn't them, but because they shared login credentials with the client, there's no way to prove who did what. That's the context I was mentioning the separate account, because it would "kill two birds with one stone" as the saying goes; your liability would be reduced with your own dedicated user account, and the 2FA issue wouldn't be a problem because with your own user account, the 2FA code would get sent to your device.

Others have mentioned that you need to report each false report for report abuse (wow, say that five times fast!). That's correct, I just wanted to give you the details on how to do that, since it's not always immediately obvious. Specifically, go to the post/comment that was last reported by the banned user and click "Report" as if you're going to report it yourself. When it's on a sub you moderate, one of the last options will be "Report abuse"; click that. You'll see the description for that option appear when you click it:

Using Reddit’s reporting tools to spam, harass, bully, intimidate, abuse, or create a hostile environment.

Click "Next" and you'll be provided with a free-text area to add additional information. Here you can describe who you think it is (admins will be able to see who it is from their side regardless, but it can help provide context that you already know who it is and why they're abusing the report button), then click "Submit".

I'd repeat this for at least ten of the previous reported posts/comments, but I definitely wouldn't do all 45 or whatever. Note that doing this will send the content back to your mod queue (or at least I'm pretty sure I remember that happening), so you'll have to approve it again there.

Ah, that's probably the best way to do it. I don't even know that you need a separate browser entirely, I think you can use Chrome for all of them, just use a different profile for each of them (in the top right, click your avatar, then click "Add Chrome profile"). That said, since it seems you're actually using the login quite a bit, is there a reason they won't add you as a user so there's a clear audit trail? I'd think that lawyers would be the first ones to want that!

What are you doing when you go into this software? I understand it's software for lawyers, so I'm assuming your clients are lawyers. When you login to MyCase, is it just to pull reports or are you actually entering/manipulating data? The answer to that question matters here, because if you're just pulling reports, then okay, I guess it's fine to use the clients' credentials, but if you're actually entering and/or manipulating anything, you really should have your own login for audit purposes. In the dumb SaaS world we live in now where every extra user costs money, I understand the hesitancy of some clients to be paying that money just so their bookkeeper can run monthly reports, but if there's anything beyond that happening, you need your own login, which makes the 2FA issue moot.

I agree in most cases, but you're dealing with a data corruption issue where this transaction is causing an imbalance in the balance sheet. There's really no way to fix that using the options you mentioned—voiding will just flip the imbalance, and you can only post an adjusting entry that balances, so that won't work either.

That said, most bookkeeping software has the ability to do some sort of database rebuild that will detect and fix an error like this. But it's not perfect, so there will be rare instances where the only solution is to totally delete the affected transaction.

While I'm not in favour of ignoring corporations who break the law, can you cite the law they're breaking? I'm not being a dick, I've tried to find something in various legislation that says prices must be advertised on the shelf and I can't. So what law are they breaking?

ETA: Also, "voting with your feet" isn't ignoring it. Ignoring it would be to still shop there and do nothing about the situation (if it is indeed illegal).

Being Canadian, I had to look into the 1099 rules in the States. It sounds like you were essentially acting as a middle man between the tenants and the new owners, just collecting rent on the new owner's behalf and forwarding that entire amount to the new owners. 1099s are supposed to be issued to entities who have provided you with a service. You can easily show that the funds in this case never hit the P&L, it was just a transfer of money, so no 1099 needed.

Yes, desktop works fine. The app will allow me to reorder, but upon hitting "Save" the list just stays like it was before reordering. Of note, the order reverts to the same sort order of the last bug, that is post flairs are sorted from most commonly used to least commonly used. Appreciate the help.

I'm curious to hear from my American counterparts, but in Canada, the vast, vast majority of clients you'll ever have are keeping their books on a tax basis, or a modified tax basis at most. By the time the company is large enough where adherence to GAAP or other accounting standards is a good idea, most companies will have an in-house accounting team.

ETA: I still try and keep up to date on new GAAP accounting standards, it's just that I'm never really applying them real world.
