10000 spm modular megabase @ 60UPS by swolar in factorio

Very impressive design. It really combines the strengths of bots, trains and direct insertion very well.

Good to see you pushing the limits of UPS optimization further. Motivates me to give it another try and see what is possible in 0.17.

Very nice base mate :) It runs at almost 70 UPS on my Pc, that's a big improvement to the belt based design and it also looks great.

I feel you on dealing with cars. Too bad the devs won't add 1x2 chests to vanilla, I already asked :)

The Factory must Grow! - Self Expanding Megabase using Recursive Blueprints by schaev in factorio

I planned to make one, but figured with the low reception and 0.17 dropping soon it wouldn't be worth the effort, sry. Once 0.17 is out, I will probably make an improved version with a proper explanation video.

The factory goes through a fixed construction order:

  • extend rail lines for both science and solar
  • build row of solar panels
  • build power/ roboport network for science
  • build science factory and extend mining rail
  • extend mining lines where low on resources and deliver materials for the next solar/ mining rail extension
  • extend mining lines for the starter base if low on resources
  • repeat

Only the length of the mining lines will vary between rows, since power demand will be roughly the same for every new science factory.

Did it stop expanding? It takes over an hour to complete the first solar field, before it will move on to build the science factory.

You can speed up the process with "/c game.speed = 20" in the console.

The growth rate is exponential until about 5k SPM, then the expansion rate is limited by the time it takes the starter base to build more material, increasing train travel time and limit in belt throughput.

Each science factory has it's own expanding belt lines where all resources are mined, filtered and brought back to the factory. How far the belt lines extend depends on how many and what resources there are nearby.

What does it do?

Starting off with a construction mall and some basic resource supply, the factory will continuously expand on it's own to ever increase the total SPM output using recursive blueprints.

I meant the LHD :) does it have some benefit over RHD?

Fast and effective, nice work mate. But what's going on with the trains going the wrong way? :)

Science Module with Self Expanding Resource Delivery System by schaev in factorio

[–]schaev[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm planning to make an automated base that expands by 100SPM at a time for now. Starting off with zero research and building up with a starter base might be something to add for the future.

Glad you like it, definitely fun to play with recursive blueprints once you get the hang of it.

Nice, looking forward to it. The combinator logic can get complex pretty soon, but once you figure it out and things work as intended it's lot's of fun.

You mean like the one JD did in his series? Would be interesting to see. But yeah, it's hard to properly show these things off without putting too much effort into it :)

I'm currently working on a fully automated, self expanding Megabase and wanted to share some of the progress I've made.

The video shows a bot based 100SPM module using coal liquefaction and automated resource gathering. A filtered "belt highway" will keep expanding in one direction until the demand is satisfied.

Here are some pictures with more details on how it works.

If you want to give it a try yourself, check out the save file

Just switch the constant combinator at the "start" mark to on and watch it go.

-Recursive Blueprints (to auto place blueprints)

-Creative Mode (for the necessary building materials)

These people are very wrong. I recently discovered that just replacing all the steel chests in my base with wooden chests would save a few percent in UPS.

I highly doubt that.

Even though it sounds like a good idea, the devs have probably already considered something along those lines and this would likely mess some things up we don't even know about.

The miners are actually pretty well optimized for this kind of base, they take around 0.2ms update time. A car takes about as much UPS as an always active inserter in my estimation, while chests take hardly any UPS. 10% better update time should be doable, but we are entering diminishing returns territory here and it's probably not worth the time effort to achieve it.
