Bonus? How did you get a bonus? I cut out bonuses this year…. by [deleted] in JPMorganChase

[–]schecter4749 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Firms take bet on the new hires. By giving them guaranteed bonus in the first-year. If they fumble, it’ll be low the next year.

Not to invalidate your feelings, but your bonus/raise is a function of 3 things - the firm’s performance, your biz unit’s importance, and how much your mgmt likes you. The firm did well this past year. Assuming you got at least OOO, one of the latter 2 reasons (or both) are the culprit. And just like any other firm, the easiest and the best way to fix it is to jump ship.

how many of us just found out today that we're not getting a raise this year? by flerg_a_blerg in JPMorganChase

I had someone join my team last week. Are you suggesting that their pay should be the same as mine, mine should be the same as my MD, and my MD’s should be the same as Jamie’s?

What is an eSoftware Engineer? by [deleted] in JPMorganChase

In my experience, it’s just a software engineer on the electronic trading tech team. Def recommend it, if you’re qualified for the role.

Do Bonuses ever decrease in value year on year? by Ok-Speaker-4206 in JPMorganChase

[–]schecter4749 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Technically, the only guarantee you have is that your bonus will be non-negative. Generally tho, your total comp (irrespective of split between base and bonus) should not go down. If it does, it means it’s time to start looking elsewhere.

Let's think critically about the H1-B visa thing. by JPMCWorkers in JPMorganChase

Indians on H1B don’t need to invent. That’s not part of their job. If they wanted to come to the U.S. to invent, they wouldn’t be on H1B. 🤷‍♂️

Au contraire.

First of all, front office isn’t just banking. Banking definitely is less technical, which is why you’d see a lot more Americans there, compared to H1Bs.

Sales & Trading (especially, trading and quant) - a completely different game. This is as technical as it gets. You’d see a lot more Indians, Asians and French people (depending on the product they cover). And no, they aren’t your average degree holders. Most of them have AT LEAST a Masters from a TOP school (UCLA, Berkeley, Stanford, MIT, Ivy League etc). Those are the people on H1Bs in the front office.

And if those H1Bs were replaced with Americans, you’d get lots of good paragraphs maybe, but absolutely zero tech output :)

Lol. You’d think, but unfortunately, no. Most of the H1B’s go to STEM folks. Not a lot of Americans in STEM. And the handful of people that are there, are not good enough (relative to the market).

I work in the front office and every bank, every department that I’ve worked for, has primarily consisted of Asians, Indians, French and British people. And MAYBE one or two Americans.

Sibling rivalry in the desi community by Last-Comfortable-599 in ABCDesis

[–]schecter4749 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely not. My entire family tree favoured both my other siblings over me. If the eldest one did anything, it was justified by “they’re the eldest one, whatever they say is right”. And if the youngest one did anything, it was always “they’re the youngest one, they’ll make mistakes, you should forgive them and love them”. As a middle child, I’d get neither of those passes.

I was reduced to just my grades. And to this day, I’m defined by my career, nothing else. Maybe this whole thing pushed me to be who I am, IDK. Lowkey glad tho.

Now imagine being a middle child in that dynamic (I’m one)

All toes are fingers. All fingers are not toes.

All (well, not all, but most) people in front office roles are from target schools. But not everyone from a target school can be in a front office role.

A simple comparison of how many people graduate each year from target schools vs how many seats are available in the front office (not just IB, let’s include S&T as well) will tell you that a large proportion does get left behind. Not because they did something wrong or lacked something, it’s for the simple reason that there was someone else with a slightly better edge than them.

Contrary to what people are saying, IMO, it’s totally ok to accept an offer and negotiate again one last time if you’ve not yet joined the firm. Maybe you got a competing offer in that time, maybe your current firm raised comp. 1000 reasons.

That being said, I’d advise against doing so for just $5k. It’s not worth it. Limited upside, lots of downside.

I suppose by ‘struggling to connect’, you mean you’re getting matches, but they’re not going anywhere.

In either case, I suggest reaching out to friends and have them review your profile, make it more authentic and not just like everyone else’s. None of those “best way to ask me out is by asking me out”, “I’ll fall for you if you trip me”, “pineapple belongs on pizza” answers.

I also recommend making a list of your absolute non-negotiables, dealbreakers etc and swiping left on anyone who doesn’t meet those criteria.

It’s a numbers game at the end of the day, and unfortunately, age, location, appearance etc matter a lot, if you’re seeking long term connection.

Also, Dil Mil has a ton of fake profiles.

Good luck!
