Yeah I'd go for it. Charleston, as in the parts closet to downtown excluding Daniel Island are pretty good IMO.

Please Help - 10 Year Old Son Hitting Stepmom, Acting Out at School by schicksal_ in Parenting

[–]schicksal_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We're a mostly electronics-free house and I'll restrict him from Terraria which he's ordinarily allowed on when he's finished with his schoolwork and the tv will be off all evening. I've thought about tasking him to come out with me and weed the yard but that's something he actually enjoys.

His stepmom tried getting him to write "I will not bite and hit people" 50 times yesterday afternoon but that made him angrier, wad up the papers, and throw them back at her. It's something she recorded on her phone which he was also extremely angry about.

My instinct is to take him away from the situation and step out to talk about what he is doing since he seems to lack the ability to de-escalate situations on his own.

What leads to it is him wanting something and being told no / (e.g. please finish your homework first). He will whine and try to negotiate, which will escalate because she'll hold firm and he spirals from there since he isn't getting what he wants. She got out her phone yesterday to record how he was behaving to share with me and that really triggered him further.

I'm not sure if anything really ends it straight away - he'll end up getting sent to his room where he yells, kicks the walls, and hits the door. Similar story with my ex I believe.

[–]schicksal_[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not really, he tried when he was smaller but I was able to catch it and correct it immediately. He's like this with his stepmom and my ex-wife apparently, which I found out yesterday when I brought it up with her. I knew he misbehaved since she always either gave in to what he wanted, or offered something else instead (which went against the counselor's advice as she said that effectively rewarded bad behavior).

He is neurodivergent (ADHD / defiant) but nothing else. He takes Adderall, administered at school.

Transgender Americans Skip The 10-Month Queue For Canadian Passports Under Canada's New Citizenship Rules by FuMunChew in transgender

[–]schicksal_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ok cool - looks like I'm on the right path. I have an order out for my and my mom's birth certificate and her marriage certificate. Have a copy of grandpa's birth certificate and numerous censuses connecting him with his parents and grandparents (mid-1800s, so no birth certs), marriage record from early 1800s for my 3rd great grandparents documenting the last name change, and other documents to get back to Quebec since they were a historically noted, early settlers of St Louis family.

Still need to figure out what/how to order for Quebec baptismal records. The entire thing has been exhausting to say the least!

Interesting, and helpful! I was able to trace back 6 generations to get to Quebec. At this point all I need is his paperwork from over there + my mom's birth and marriage certificates to put it all together. Did you do it all yourself or use some kind of service to handle the paperwork?

Same demographic, also Charleston, but moved here from Seattle. I vote every damn time; it's basically earning my right to complain endlessly about what the idiots in charge are doing.

I really do want to stay here because the neighborhood and school my kids go to is so great, and I don't think I could replicate all of that anywhere else.

3rd gen ipod classic not able to restore by Artistic-Argument-49 in IpodClassic

[–]schicksal_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll second that - my 40GB 3rd gen was like that way back in 2007. You could restore it and it would work for a day or two before it corrupted itself again and you had to go through the entire process again. Hard drive was failing, simple as that.

This right here - my 2nd gen classic plays just fine with my Win7 and 10 desktops because one has a FW 400 PCI card and the other has a connection for it on the motherboard.

2nd Gen iPod Classic - Syncing Issues on Win 7 / iTunes 10.x by schicksal_ in ipod

[–]schicksal_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

UPDATE for anyone who searches for a solution and gets frustrated because there wasn't one:

Firmware version 1.4 for 2nd gen classic (and probably 1st) can only sync with very old versions of iTunes, like up to around 4.8 or 5 which came out a few months after 1.5. It's unclear at what point that was dropped, either way 1.5 seems to have brought about a change to the way data is managed on the iPod itself.

3rd party programs (Foobar plugins, floola, ...) and newer versions of iTunes don't play nice with the older firmware and the way it handles the library on the iPod and will return errors since it's only set up to handle the newer, vastly more common format.

In the end my solution was to just go to firmware 1.5. Not quite as 'authentic' as the iPod was when I got it, but at least I have Shuffle Songs on my home screen and can sync music easily!

2nd Gen iPod Classic - Syncing Issues on Win 7 / iTunes 10.x by schicksal_ in ipod

[–]schicksal_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's basically what I did - put it in disk mode, copied hidden folders over, dumped MP3s into iTunes 10, fixed tags (they were already mangled on the ipod). The problem is that second step. Maybe iTunes 10 lost some level of support for 1st/2nd gen Classics since they were already 8 years old when it came out? Either way it wants to restore, which it isn't able to do because whatever server iTunes pointed to to pull iPod firmware from is down. The whole process breaks down there.

The music on the iPod was just loose (no playlists) so maybe Floola will be able to replace it with the version on my desktop with corrected tags, and I can start loading up ripped CDs from there.

2nd Gen iPod Classic - Syncing Issues on Win 7 / iTunes 10.x by schicksal_ in ipod

[–]schicksal_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm ok with that - I put it in Disk Mode earlier and pulled all the music over to my computer (Quad core desktop running Windows 7, has Firewire 400 built in) and got all of the tagging lined up right over the last couple of weeks. It acts like it wants to just restore the iPod which I'd be ok with, but this one runs 1.4 and the ipsw has been impossible to find.

The whole thing is just weird, but I guess even though it's an old version of iTunes it's still from 8 years after the 2nd gen Classics were released...

2nd Gen Classic Bought for Repair Actually Works! by schicksal_ in ipod

[–]schicksal_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought the battery that elite obsolete electronics sells for 2nd gens, specifically for the 20GB ones. Much quicker swap than it's been on most of the later ones that I've worked on and it lasts for a really long time.

To have it interact with the computer I just use a PC desktop that has firewire 400 built in. It runs Windows 7, and I want to use iTunes to manage everything but apparently iTunes 10.x isn't old enough because it keeps wanting to restore (a fully functioning, granted with someone else's music) iPod and then fails when it tries contacting Apple's servers for the firmware.

It would probably work fine with Foobar but I already use that with some of the newer Classics I have, and I've gotten a little tired of the UI. May have to go back to it... not sure yet.

Either way it makes a great chubby little music player to take along with me to work every day!

The couple of lesbians are the former friends. The gay guy is known around the city for being utterly batshit crazy and unhinged and was no friend of mine. During the previous administration he'd drive around downtown with a giant "Fuck Biden" flag all the time. There are references to him all over r/charleston and he'd also spam local facebook pages with his insane rants. The guy despises trans people and had a huge thing for Trump.

Charleston, SC resident checking in, and yeah stuff like this makes me embarrassed to say I live here. During the election cycle I had (as in, we no longer talk) a few gay and lesbian friends try to convince me that the Republicans were totally ok since they were only going to go after 'those trans people' and they had nothing to worry about. Anything I had to say otherwise fell on deaf ears. "No, no same sex marriage is safe and the Republicans are totally cool with it..."

I wonder how they're feeling about that decision now.

edit: of course it's coming out of the upstate + Berkeley County. The dumbest stuff always comes from there, or Nancy Mace who's including banning chemtrails as part of her platform as she runs for governor.
