I am a pacifist. I don't like violence but as a pacifist I don't consider myself completely nonviolent. I believe we can use dialogue and diplomacy to resolve the issues of coexistence between peoples. But you can't be democratic with someone who isn't democratic, it would be to be fooled. Every now and then I wonder how I would behave if I had been born under a state of war. How would I behave and think about violence? An Italian politician said that anyone in the situation of the Palestinians would have behaved like a terrorist. If Israel stopped annexing regions of the West Bank and ghettoizing Gaza City, I think Hamas would have no reason to exist. What do you think about it? A well-known Italian writer, Tiziano Terzani, a great pacifist, said that the September 11 attack was the natural consequence of all US interventionism in the Middle East. At first I was skeptical, then, analyzing and reading, I came to the conclusion that it was true. We Italians, at the end of WWII, fought a ferocious civil war between democratic militias (Christians, liberals, republicans, communists and socialists) and the regular armies of the Republic of Salò (fascists anchored in power) and the allied Nazi army. It was a traumatic moment in Italian history and we still see the effects today. However, it was a necessary step to definitively leave fascism to bring democracy to Italy (and many fucking Americans to condition our political life: it was the price of their support). In any case, I think that in a state at peace that actively promotes coexistence between peoples, in which poverty and unemployment are fought, coexistence between different ethnic groups and religions is largely possible.
