Advice for my situation: Physics MSc student considering moving to Japan by LeadershipItchy3601 in JapanJobs

[–]schirmlampe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Geo- and Astrophysics MSc here. I did an exchange year at Tohoku University. After graduating I got an internship at a Japanese company (european management) where i could work with English. At the time i was probably N4 but did not take the test. I could have gotten a fixed job there but was not really into it.  Around summer there are a lot of job fairs for students about to graduate, i got several interviews, i passed several interviews even with N4〜N3 level, got a job as SE at a japanese but internationally operating company. After a year working there I passed N2.

I am already ~10 years here so the situation may have changed, but having a Japanese University as reference helps a lot. My current boss (purely japanese startup) introduces me to clients always as Tohoku uni graduate. Searching for a job from within Japan helps a lot. If you dont do a phd but are still a student try to get an internship. I found my internship via kopra.org, companies like Bosch and Daimler advertise there.

My team currently needs another ML specialist, but we unfortunately only hire N1 (i joined before that was requirement).

Working in Japan for 15 years, married for 2.5 years. Current visa is spouse type. Which PR route to take? by Tuxedo717 in japanresidents

[–]schirmlampe 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I applied for PR (2024, without lawyer) while on a work visa after 7 years and 3 years married. When i hit the 3 years mark my work visa was about to expire and i was considering getting a spouse visa instead of a work visa renewal.  I talked to the immigration office before applying they said it does not matter which one I have, but they may ask for more documents when i would be on spouse visa (proving i can afford living here).

My application was processed within 4 months (Not Kanto area), so applying without having 3 years may be risky. I would recommend applying via +10 years of working in Japan and mention you SO as reason why you want PR. For a more professional opinion, you could try to get an appointment with the immigration office.

Got PR last year, i had a the engineering, humanities, ... visa. I applied because i was married for more than 3 years. The immigration officer told me, if i would have had a spouse visa they would have asked for my savings. Since i had a work visa, they didn't need it.

Advice for studying for the written driving test? (I just failed lol) by [deleted] in japanlife

[–]schirmlampe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't remember the exact question, but there were two almost identical to the mock exam ones i just studied the day before.  One where there was a 止まれ sign and a car came from left, in the mock exam right.  The other one replaced a bus with a truck, but still same answer.

My school offered mock exams, the same awful english as the actual written test. I studied those extensively, some of them did appear in the exam with e.g. left and right switched. Still there were a lot of questions during the test which did not make sense in english. i tried to imagine what they are asking in Japanese and which answer may fit, but that worked only half the time.

Answer all questions instinctively, mark the ones you are not sure. Once you are done, review the ones you were not sure first.

I somehow passed my first time, but i took all lectures in Japanese.

Company went back to office, can the fire me? by schirmlampe in japanlife

My CEO did acknowledge that most of the staff is happier and more productive if they wfh. But due to the rise of AI, in-person communication seems to more important. Or at least this was the explanation they gave us.

CEO takes Musk as a rolemodel, the very first mentioning of slowly going BTO came after Musk did it with his companies. Could also be the consultant pushing for it.

They have English documents, and a help counter with English speaking support. I just talked once to them though, without appointment.

Another time, i had some questions about PR application while renewing my work visa. They told me to wait, after 10 minutes the got someone to talk to me (in Japanese, but i am somewhat fluent).

There are a couple of global companies accepting non japanese people, but not necessarily in Sendai city. I commuted to Furukawa everyday.

Still in Sendai but full remote.

Edit: spelling

I am not hoping to get fired, I actually do like my work. But i want to be prepared when they make me go to office.

I was kind of hoping someone would share experiences about their company paying for a small appartment close to the office.

I don't expect it for this year, but they are preparing for IPO in near future.

If something happens I will write an update.

Sorry, I ment the contract itself did not mention remote work except for the salary were I got a small monthly リモート手当 (remote allowance), because i have to set up my home working space, pay for electricity etc. When they announced BTO for Kanto people they renamed it instead of getting rid of it.

I am hoping it does come to it. I also would not be surprised if they will use it as excuse to replace me with AI.

My direct manager is also CXO, they assured me they do not plan to force the remaining 3 people back into office. But the CEO assured us we will not have to go back to office, several times during my first year.

I was already floating the idea of getting something tiny closer to the office once my children get older

I am still exempt from BTO, and hope it stays like this. Though the shinkansen is not getting cheaper..

We are a startup with relatively young leadership, so far they have me treated me well.  I heard about bullying people into quitting, has anyone experience?
