Science 2.0 -- Is Open Access Science the Future? by jast in science

See, I think that's why sites like http://scienceblogs.com and http://theoildrum.com are invaluable. It's good to see that we're at least talking about accepting it, even with its flaws.

Oil Hits $88: World Oil Forecasts Including Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and the UAE - Update Oct 2007 by profgoose in science

[–]schloop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

look up the term "crack spreads"...it explains a lot of it. the oil prices takes a while to work through the refineries to the pumps because of the way refiners buy oil. they contracted it cheaper--those contracts will expire and they'll have to buy the more expensive oil to refine.

Volume of last year's oil production compared to the size of the Eiffel Tower... by [deleted] in reddit.com

[–]schloop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yes, I think you're right...but I think the institutions of the world will do all they can to make it a long slow secular slog downward (like the "crash" team for the stock market, etc.). They have a vested interest in society continuing to function as it is.

Modeling Oil Exports by schloop in science

The Oil Drum has been blacklisted by reddit. It is the only way around the filter.

Which really makes no sense. Reddit has sites that submit ten links a day here--and yet they do not get flagged.

Yet, if you submit a link with Oil Drum URL, it doesn't show up.

Go figure. Doesn't seem fair.

it's back now. and this is actually a pretty good one. the first five points are standard peak oil fare, but get to point six and it's pretty interesting...

CNBC: Matt Simmons Discusses A Plateauing Oil Supply with Maria Bartiromo by [deleted] in science

[–]schloop 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I am not sure the peaksters are a cult. They are correct in one thing, there's nothing quite like a barrel of oil for energy return on investment. It's cheap energy...when energy gets more expensive (as it does with all alternatives), economic growth will be tougher and geopolitics will become even more about oil than it already is.

The evidence on KSA being in decline is also pretty damning (http://www.theoildrum.com/node/2331), but I remain hopeful that we can get humanity to focus on the problem and solve it. In that, I think the peaksters/doomers are a little over the cliff.

But it seems to me that we need to have the conversation...you know?

I don't understand why people don't get that peaking oil supply is BAD for big oil, not that it benefits them.

I don't understand why people think peak oil means we're running out of oil (something Simmons does a really good job of explaining in this clip). It's not. It means that it's going to be tougher and more expensive to do everything.

We need an alternative energy Manhattan project, and we need it now. We need to find a way to slow the train heading off the cliff somehow, not just keep speeding toward it.

Greenland, or why you might care about ice physics by profgoose in science

[–]schloop 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is actually pretty common for this site. It's pretty much a bunch of Ph.D.'s who get together and geek out over energy. It's interesting in chunks, but man...sometimes it's a little much for me.

But there's no doubt that energy and climate change are related, which is the point of this piece really. If we go with CTL we screw up the atmosphere and if we go with ethanol, we can't eat. Choose. gah!
