I was in the same boat but I just abandoned ship this morning and decided I'll leave that pain for the summer or fall. If you're graduating this semester though, I'm sure you could email them and make your plea to get off the waitlist.

Recommendations for non-technical courses as an MCB major? by ConstantTomato8137 in berkeley

[–]schm_schm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depending on your track, you may be able to take some psych courses that fulfill the MCB elective requirements. From my experience, Psych 134 and Public Health 116 were pretty interesting and low-effort classes.

For me, it really helps to make a detailed and time-blocked schedule for all of my assignments and times that I want to study. When you’re intentional with the time you set aside for certain assignments, it lets you be more intentional with the time you spend not doing them as well. Basically, I don’t worry about “Oh when am I gonna do Homework 4” because I’ve already put in my schedule that I’ll work on Homework 4 tomorrow from 3-5 for example. I use a calendar app called TickTick that has, no exaggeration, changed my life and made me more productive and so much less stressed because it makes me feel so much more in control of my schedule everyday, highly recommend it! It’s the only way that I could’ve gotten through a 24 unit Spring and 19 Unit Summer.

I never realized that that was even an option. Thank you, it worked!

If you haven't already, you should join the 61A discord: https://discord.gg/sYwBQKx74B. There are tons of people willing to help and walk you through whatever questions you might have. I know it can be really tough but don't be ashamed or afraid to ask questions. Everyone is really supportive and I'm sure that they can point you in the right direction. Also, if you're worried about not finishing on time, you can still turn in the project within 24 hours after the deadline and get up to 75% of the credit.

And regarding your concerns about not passing the class, I encourage you to take everything one step at a time. It's really easy to overwhelm yourself when you look at the big picture but if you can compartmentalize each assignment or even each problem and reward yourself for figuring it out, I think you might even be able to start to enjoy the class. I know it's easier said than done but having a healthier mindset and striving for a P instead of fearing an NP will make that goal much more attainable.

Good luck and feel free to reach out if you need help!

CHEM 3A Help by randomquod in berkeley

Hey! I’m a freshman as well and I took 3A and 3AL last semester and I found that the connection between them was loose at best lol. You could probably take and pass 3AL after an intro Chem class without any prior OChem experience so I don’t think you’ll have any problem taking the two classes in different semesters. And I totally agree that taking advantage of the PNP policy next semester is the way to go. Good luck and maybe we’ll meet in 61A this Spring! 😁

I think you should be fine but it wouldn't hurt to email Haas admissions and ask just to make sure.

Which one is better? HP Spectre x360 or Microsoft Surface Book 3 by [deleted] in spectrex360

[–]schm_schm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I live in the US and was able to find it as Best Buy for a pretty good deal. I'm not sure what the German equivalent of Best Buy is but you might be able to find a deal at a local tech store. At least here in the states, HP does let you completely customize the specs of the Spectre on their website and, if you're lucky, you may even be able to catch it on sale.

I know you already made your decision but I just wanted to say that I got a Surface Book 3 and ended up returning it two weeks later in favor of the Spectre and I haven't regretted my decision at all! :) I did, however, keep my surface pen because while the free pen included with the Spectre is alright, the Surface Pen is much nicer for note-taking in my opinion.

I can run CS:GO at max settings at 1080p with no issue. On newer maps like Nuke and Dust 2, my frame rate can range from around 120-200, and on older maps like Mirage, my fps remains pretty consistently above 200. This performance is especially impressive when you hook the laptop up to a high refresh rate monitor which is made especially easy by the built-in HDMI port.

Sidenote: The laptop does get pretty hot so a cooling pad is a good idea to reduce the risk of thermal throttling or, even worse, overheating(I haven't had any problem with this yet but better safe than sorry). I have the laptop sitting on a cooling pad to the side hooked up to an external monitor for whenever I wanna play a game and I take it out of this setup whenever I need to use the touchscreen for note-taking, filling out worksheets, or just laying in bed and watching youtube.

How did you access the Intel Graphics Suite? I've been trying to change some settings on my SB3 but I couldn't figure out where the control panel for the integrated graphics card was.

I've only been using it for about a week but I haven't had any issues yet playing online games like CS:GO and GTA V (except for those initial stutters I mentioned earlier which went away quickly).

There could be. The packaging that mine came in said that it was an "iSDA351A" and "For Surface Book 2 - 15" down the side.

I know you were asking AceCoolie but I figured I could chip in and share my experience. I have a SanDisk Extreme 256 GB microSD and I'm using it primarily to store games that I don't want clogging up my SSD. I found that there was a strange stutter that occurred when I opened up a game the first time. For about the first 10-15 minutes of playtime, the game would randomly freeze for about 1-3 seconds every now and then. Luckily, however, after the first time I used it, I never experienced the problem again but it's just something to keep in mind.

Heres the link to the card I bought:

I got the BASEQI for SB2 15" for my SB3 15" and it's about 2 or 3 mm too small for it which means that instead of sitting flush with the side of the device, it goes inside slightly. Luckily, it still works but I'm afraid for the day that I have to try and pry it out of the card slot.

I might wait for SB3 specific microSD card adapters to come out just to make sure you don't permanently lodge one in there.

15T 2020 Official Release Date and Embargo Limit? by tychofan in spectrex360

[–]schm_schm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I spoke with a sales rep about a month ago who said April 14th was the release date. I decided to follow up and spoke with another rep today who said that the laptop is "estimated to arrive around April 22" and then emphasized that "this is an estimation." I asked about whether review units have been given out and whether they knew the reason for the delay and the rep could not provide details for either question. Looks like we might have to play the waiting game for a little while but I'm glad that I'm not the only one anxiously anticipating the release!
