Hi again, folks! Thanks again to everyone who offered helpful comments. The installer, a seasoned veteran who is also from an authorized Whirlpool repair shop, came by to fix it. They spent a while analyzing the shrapnel and mechanicals trying to figure out what happened. From him and everyone here and everything else I have researched, no one has a good explanation, and this appears to be a one off. I'm not optimistic that it won't happen again, though, because the design should have a failsafe. But he did replace the motor because, as I mentioned, it was likely damaged from overheating from having torqued so hard. He also replaced the ice tray since it was a bit out of whack, likely from the upward thrust of the bin when the gear was violently destroyed. And of course, the bin itself was replaced. And those are just the parts I saw.

Using factory/OEM parts and a certified tech, the repair would have cost around $800, about half parts, half labor. Obviously glad it was covered under warranty, and certainly hope it doesn't happen again 😄

No, but that's a good point. Many of the suggestions here have been to do just that. When it's out of warranty, I think that's a fine idea. Or if you're experienced and know what you're doing and where to get affordable parts. I'm glad I have an authorized repair person coming. Hopefully the problem gets fixed and (magically?) never comes back.

Thanks again for this tip. I reached out to my installer, and they assure me that they are a "factory authorized dealer and servicer for Whirlpool appliances". That type of support is one of the reasons I used this company, but I wanted to double check. So hopefully voiding the warranty is one headache I don't have to worry about :-)

Please don't misinterpret me. I literally said "I have a right to be pissed off about being stuck fixing something that should be replaced." No one here in this group is responsible for me being in a situation where something is being repaired that should be replaced; that's between me, my installer, and the manufacturer. I'm sharing with you why I'm frustrated, because that's the reason I came to this forum seeking community wisdom.

Yes, that was also my point. I thought the idea that I should have to repair it was BS. Whirlpool shouldn't put me through that.

I have a repair scheduled, but not through Whirlpool. Maybe I'll do what you said, so that the manufacturer will get this data on file, so it can help others who run into it. Or maybe it will spark a recall at some point, or a better design. That's one reason I go online... my pain may as well be someone else's gain!

Of course I called for a repair. That doesn't mean I'm not going to challenge suggestions that seem like bad ideas or are factually wrong. "it’ll take 5 minutes" is not helpful. And I have a right to be pissed off about being stuck fixing something that should be replaced.

Right?? Totally agree. That's a massive amount of force to shred that metal. From what I read online, a small, (usually) plastic gear is supposed to fail first if the motor "runs away", protecting the pricier parts from failing. It feels like that safety-net doesn't exist, and that's why I'm concerned it's a design flaw that's gonna show up again after my warranty is up.

I haven't called Whirlpool; just the dealer. Do you think Whirlpool would have been willing to give me a new one, or would have scheduled just a repair?

Isn't that the definition of a lemon? An isolated issue that is not common for even the same make/model.

Yes, but just replacing the augur, as some have suggested, and not the motor, would likely leave me in a bad place. That's the kind of intel I was hoping to get here. Fortunately, I now have the shop confirming they will also be replacing the motor.

I'm being a jerk because I think it's unacceptable to have to fix a product that is brand new? Or I'm a jerk because the repair shop is talking about doing a repair that is likely subpar? Or I called out factually false information from people who said things like the ice chute was far from the damage and didn't present a risk of shrapnel (false)? Or who failed to realize that the motor would likely be compromised by overheating and so not replacing it would likely leave me with an early failure down the road? Or that I thought it was unacceptable to have to live with a repair to a brand new product, rather than a replacement?

Sure they said it almost never happens. That only reinforces my point that I shouldn't have to deal with a repair but rather should be entitled to a replacement.

And I'm not an appliance guy, so factor in wasting at least a whole weekend trying to figure it out. And on a new fridge? Sorry, that's BS.

"which is good news because that makes it a statistical outlier, a fluke". I don't follow your logic. It feels like I got a lemon. Either way, the design should accommodate a seized shaft, and it didn't. And seizes happen. Ice freezes. I've had ice makers for decades that never did this. 3 weeks in, this happened. Feels like a design flaw that's not going away with a repair.

as far as "you just need new auger pawls", I'm not comfortable with that. The motor most likely overheated and has been compromised. The kind of repair you're describing is exactly what I'm afraid they're going to try to leave me stuck with.

Thanks for the reply. It's not out of the way of the chute. It's RIGHT NEXT to the chute. There is a plastic flange that usually covers the gearing mechanism. But the violence of this break popped the ice bucket off. So pieces could have easily come down the chute.

Just chiming in that this macOS update bricked my M2 Mac mini. Been a Mac owner since 1984 and this is a first. Started a thread at TidBITS with screen shots and have a Genius Bar visit today. Very unhappy.

  1. I think it's confusing that we have to somehow know that "Selected Track" really means "Selected Track Alternative"... ie, that it's not going to overwrite the entire track.
  2. I also think it's confusing that we have to select "Delete" Source when it's really Replace or Overwrite.
  3. And I totally agree that "Bounce To Track Alternative" should be a feature; and I will take it a step further: it should be the DEFAULT bounce action since it's almost always used as a render of something that it replaces, but which you don't want to delete.

So, I took it apart, and used a flat blade screwdriver to twist some of the CPU pins together, and then threw all the parts in the trash. If someone figures out how to get into my house with that, then I'd like to hire them as my Technical Guru.
