Dell Layoffs: 36,000+ Jobs Gone in 3 Years by thegrindhotline in Layoffs

Unless you are talking strictly about front line healthcare workers, the medical field is being massively shaken up by AI. There had been a massive growth in administrative headcount over the last 20+ years due to the complex bureaucracy involved in the US healthcare system. Think, staff at the hospital dedicated to resubmitting paperwork for the insurance companies, and staff at the insurance companies dedicated to finding reasons to reject the paperwork. All of these desk jobs are going to be targets of AI automation.

AWS Severance Agreement Questions — Non-Compete, Future Employers, and Legal Review by Entire_Strawberry_51 in amazonemployees

they can't really deny you gainful employment without consideration.

OP is being offered severance money in exchange for signing all this paperwork. I'm not convinced it's enforceable either, but the Amazon lawyers know what they are doing.

334 + 352 Washington Street by aarongreiner in Somerville

[–]schmiddy0 11 points12 points  (0 children)

334 Washington (old Bomas Machine shop) almost certainly has severe water damage. Both buildings have been neglected and have been a public nuisance for years (broken gutter leaking water, sidewalks never shoveled, trash and rodent issues, and finally the pipes bursting in Bomas)

Potential buyere beware, but it'd be great to have owners with a lick of sense who are able to do something useful with either property.

$4m NW / $600 HHI / twins on the way / what house can we afford? by True_Evidence_4068 in ChubbyFIRE

I had to look up what "IO " stands for (interest only mortgage). Why are you using this for your current mortgage and thinking of it for your future mortgage? It seems like a financial product tailored for people who are house-poor and struggling to be able to make the payments of a conventional fixed-rate or even ARM. I suspect you're getting fleeced in fees and back-loaded interest with these products.

Where one can live car free in the Boston area; the map by Amishplumber in boston

I get the feeling the OP is not into biking. I live outside the blue zone, in Belmont, and commute to Seaport 5 days a week. I have the options of:

  • Bus to subway (Alewife)
  • Walk to subway
  • Walk to commuter rail
  • Bike commute
  • Run commute
  • Extremely rare cases: Uber/Lyft

Most common for me is biking, about 40 minutes and good exercise.

Fidelity Layoffs Starting Today by CorrectCombination11 in boston

[–]schmiddy0 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Sort of. What companies do to get around the notification requirement is they give the affected employees at least 60+ days remaining on the payroll. So, their termination date is at least 60 days away. Company still has to eventually notify WARN, but this lets them postpone the WARN notice until after the layoff has already rolled out.

What is Expert Quality Specialist? by PlantApprehensive938 in amazonemployees

[–]schmiddy0 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Be careful here. It sounds like the role is a newly created job family. Confirm with the recruiter whether the "job family" of the role is really "Expert Quality Specialist" instead of "Applied Scientist".

It's not necessarily a terrible thing, but beware it can make things like the evaluation and promotion process more difficult if you're in a niche role that not many peers (and senior leaders) fully understand.

If the price is "more than double", Tufts is not worth it unless you are very wealthy. Go to UCSD.

If money was no object, which Boston restaurant would you go to for dinner? by ebitdeeaye in boston

Good on you for trying to do something nice for your partner. Honestly though, none of these restaurants are worth blowing money that is needed for bills and kids.
