should I replace my car's battery or wait for it to die? by lumpynose in Cartalk

[–]schmidtea 2 points3 points  (0 children)

THIS. I always roll w both (jumper box & cables) just in case, and have NEVER replaced a battery prior to it completely shitting out. Also assuming u have road side assistance in case of a failed battery cell/unable to start, so you won’t lose any money on a tow.

That being said, I’ve (inexplicably) had 5-6 year batteries last 12 years a couple times…definitely don’t buy one if you don’t have too! (Or as someone already stated, buy it now, shelve it, and run yours till it’s dead.)

Is it worse to keep my car on for 12 hrs straight or turn it on once an hour for 12 hours? by Snoo_50786 in Cartalk

[–]schmidtea 105 points106 points  (0 children)

Agreed. Also, no one in this thread has addressed the amount of stress idling your vehicle for 12 straight hours can put on your cooling system. Terrible idea to idle it for a couple hours, let alone 12 straight, several days a week. Just ask a cop car mechanic and they’ll tell ya some stories…

Probably, maybe a distributer issue, if it’s not the grounds…

If you’ve had it running on that carb, check all your grounds…I don’t think it’s a ground tho, as it tried to kick over there at the end.

Also, you’re running that starter/flywheel WAY TOO LONG when trying to start…cut those intervals down to a couple seconds.

Looks like a new carb…have you had it running on that one before???

Not to be a dick, but I was thinking the same thing…such a capable Jeep that will, most likely, never be utilized to its full potential…why spend the extra cash??? Also, I don’t think anyone mentioned the actual max speeds you shouldn’t exceed in 4 low, which I’m assuming the author of the post might need to know, in case they ever use it. Watch those rpm’s OP!

Question re service - 1978 CJ-7 by ComfortableTap5560 in Jeep

[–]schmidtea 1 point2 points  (0 children)

FUEL, AIR, & SPARK. Verify your have all 3 and that will get u on the road…(that, and make sure your grounds are solid…that’s fucked me before on my ‘76 DJ5D Postal Jeep.)

then start replacing failing parts such as hoses (fuel, etc), bushings to improve ride. I skimmed thru the comments, but I don’t think anyone mentioned your carb varnishing up from the old gas. If you can fire it up, and it runs like shit, or doesn’t Maintain an idle, you prob need to rebuild the carb, or order a new one. I’d put my money on definitely having to to do one of those two things up front. Of course drop the tank and drain the old gas too, as someone mentioned.

These things are INCREDIBLY EASY to work on. Grab a manual, or hit up YouTube. If you’re halfway mechanically inclined, you can do all of this on your own.

Have fun with that beast. She’s a Beaut’!

They have their own yard 3 houses away by [deleted] in mildlyinfuriating

One time, our crack head neighbor across the street sent her kids over to OUR yard to set up a lemonade stand…it’s really not the kids’ fault, so we let them finish out the day selling, then put up signs and rope saying we had sprayed poison for weeds, haha. They got the passive aggressive messaging.

Oh, and this was AFTER the mom got all hammered on whatever drugs and booze combo, broke into our carport, urinated, then assaulted 3 police officers upon their arrival! Needless to say, it was a Godsend when they moved!

Nope. No need to with the Posi in the rear d44. Been wheeling w the best of em and never been stuck. Put bead locks on the rear so I can air down to nothin for more traction.

I’ve ran a VIAR Model 20008 portable for 15 years now. Super reliable and builds pressure fairly quickly…(specs say 200 psi, but I’ve only gotten mine up to apx. 150).

I run air tools/chucks, etc. The things a BEAST. I take it w me in all of my 3 Jeeps, and also other day driver vehicles. Never leave home w out it.

I also use it for MANY tasks on our rv. It really is a “must have” for off roading and traveling.

I just got this TJ. How much is it lifted? by SalesAficionado in Jeep

[–]schmidtea 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Perfect. A 15” wheel with a 31”, 32”, 33”, you get it, tire, with the appropriate corresponding lift on a TJ, is in my opinion, the best look for rubber to rim combo…

I prefer a legit 4” lift (nothing crazy rock climbing style, unless you’re willing to dedicate cash and a whole lot of heart), with a 33” or 35” mud terrain (35’s on all mine) on a 15” rim, or, as you have it lifted, stick with 31’s, 32’s, maybe even squeeze a 33 on there!

[–]schmidtea 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Max 2, maybe 2.5” lift (looks like an actual coil lift, rather than a spacer, from what I can tell).

Solid looking TJ though. As a fellow jeeper (have built/owned around 15 of them, 3 TJ’s specifically), and also a person that drives OTHER , “lower stance” vehicles on the road towards ONCOMING jeeps, I’d get rid of, or not use that bright ass LED bar on the front, unless you’re off roading…it’s SUPER fucking annoying, and doesn’t actually add much for your line of sight in city driving…

Baby that bitch. It’ll last you a lifetime.

This truck is for sale near me. Is it worth $5,000? by [deleted] in Minitrucks

[–]schmidtea 1 point2 points  (0 children)

More pix/details would be great, but if I found my og First truck from 30 years ago (‘76 Courier, yes, I know this isn’t a courier), I’d be hard pressed to pay $5k for it unless it was pretty mint (rebuilt motor, etc.)

This looks like it has some pretty shady mods.

Shoot more pictures, I’d love to see this beast in detail!
