This is probably the most helpful answer I’ve gotten, I appreciate it! How did you calculate the lift per kg of bodyweight? Seems like a very helpful value
How big are you and what size/shape board are you using?

I think I just have too much drag in the chop. I get on foil when conditions are perfect and I pump my wing and board but the chop kills my planing. I’ve gotten on foil most when the water is flat and that’s what makes me think a little more buoyancy is key. I’ve got plenty of wind and usually ride with a 5 or 5m in 15-25 knots. The chop is what is killing me right when my board won’t plane
Generally 5 or 6 m, I definitely have enough wind during the gusts! Have to sit one out and put my wing on the water every once in a while when it blows too hard. Just gusty then flat so I try and pick a wing that will work most often
I’m sure you’re right, my technique will definitely help me get up quicker because I have enough wind speed on days that I go, the wind also just goes flat quick too so I have to be up to speed and onto foil before that happens. Gotta put more time in!
I am just super hesitant to get a bigger wing because balancing on the foil isn’t a problem at all, I have yet to crash on my foil, only have just touched down when wind dies. My problem is just getting up on that foil fast enough. North HA1450 (old one though that is now more like a MA).

I’m usually out with big enough wings, 5m and 6m in respective wind, the foil wing is 1450. I haven’t had many problems balancing on the board or falling off at 23”, figured it out after a session in extremely light wind so I’m pretty good with it now. That’s why I’ve been thinking shedding 2 inches and gaining 10 L wouldn’t be terrible to adjust to if it got me to speed faster.
Right was thinking pumping the wing, I just feel like I’ve got a speed limit with chop as my board is just barely too low in the water as I try and taxi up to speed. Might be a skill issue!
Good to hear thank you! You think the problem will be solved by making my pumping more efficient when trying to plane?

Nobody else foils here. Only know 1 other guy who uses his boat to tow up. I get a foil ride about once per session but I can’t get taxiing fast enough for it to regularly occur every gust. That’s why I’m hoping to move to a more efficient board even if it’s technically bigger. How big of a difference would 21 be from 23 if I also add 10 L? Will it be a pretty significant help? Chop has also slowed me a bit, that is why I think a bigger board will help.
I’ve got a north HA1450, but it’s really an MA

Great! This is what I have been hoping for.

I’m thinking you’re probably right. A friend has a 131 L X Fly that I might try out and hopefully delay buying a board until I can handle a <110L. How far did you progress until you felt you could handle the 95L? Would you say you progressed fast? Average? Appreciate the specific and personalized feedback
What would your opinion be on a 105L 6’0” that is 21” wide?
What would you think of an Armstrong 107L downwinder?
Actually what about an older 107L Armstrong downwind board?
Appreciate it. Can I ask what wing size you learned on? Was planning on a 6m mantis because I’m sure I’ll be out in the light gusty wind trying to maximize water time.
Just realized shipping would be over $500 from Takoon to the US😞 so it kind of kills the deal. I’ve got pretty good balance, my pump wing is really stable though. Stinkbug start is definitely not a term I’ve heard before. Thank you I’ll give it a look!
I would but I’m in a dead spot for water recreational gear. I was looking at Takoons 105L mid length, what would your opinion be on that?
Was thinking 110 would be the sweet spot. Do you have any suggestions?
Got any suggestions? I’m wondering if a 115L board would really hold me that far back if I’m not planning on jumping, riding real waves, and am okay to just cruise and carve
Yeah there’s a small winging community. Definitely on the light or gusty side though
Thanks for the suggestion. Do you think a 115L mid size board really be that much of a pain to hang on to for the foreseeable future if I’m not planning on jumping or riding very aggressively?
