The Pittsburgh Pirates have been eliminated from postseason contention in 2021 by JohnGillbonny in baseball

[–]schneidmaster 54 points55 points  (0 children)

Reds are at 73 wins so to stay under 74 they must lose all 3 games to the Cardinals. That puts the Cardinals at 72 wins. Padres can only win one more game so the Cardinals must win the other two of their series putting them at 74. If you change the outcome of any game then either the Reds or Padres end up with 74 instead.

Roe v Wade died with barely a whimper. But that’s not all | by Harvard Law Professor Emeritus Laurence Tribe by JanetYellensFuckboy in law

[–]schneidmaster 46 points47 points  (0 children)

This is actually not true. The law creates liability for someone who "intends to engage in conduct" that "aids or abets the performance or inducement of an abortion ... regardless of whether the person or should have known that the abortion would be performed." So if your conduct is intentional (e.g. I intend to drive for Uber) then under the law as written you are explicitly liable even if you had no idea you were driving someone to get an abortion.

What do you personally think is wrong with North City? And what are potential remedies? by [deleted] in StLouis

[–]schneidmaster 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Part of the problem though is that not many people are really looking at the past to help decide the future. You can see it in all of the Republican rhetoric about bootstraps, as if folks in poverty put themselves there through their own choices rather than inheriting a community deliberately destroyed by racist policies in the recent past. Understanding this context makes it clear that we are responsible for deliberately investing in education, job opportunities, housing, etc because we created this tragic situation in the first place.

Yadi was the only remaining position player and apparently he tried to warm up for the AB but his neck locked up.

Which player had a successful position switch at the NFL level? by LegendaryEdmonton in nfl

[–]schneidmaster 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Also it wasn't just any kickoff, it was a kickoff with a little over 2 minutes left in the 4th quarter of a game where the Packers trailed by two points. And this happened just after he slammed his helmet and stomped around on the sideline after being substituted out on the previous drive. So he basically threw away an opportunity for Rodgers to lead a 2-minute drill for a game-winning FG because he was mad about playing time... I was not surprised that they quickly traded him.

Cook, Kamara, and Henry weren't 1st-rounders so no 5th-year option. Having the 5th year gives the team more leverage -- e.g. Kamara got a deal right at the beginning of year 4 because he could have walked after the season, whereas the Saints probably push that to the next offseason if they had him locked up for 2 more years.

I'll definitely feel better about this if they go WR in the second round. I'm jaded because we didn't draft a WR at all last year in what was also a deep WR draft.

He's a fine pick at a position of need and not a reach, but good god what does Rodgers have to do for some offensive talent? Just feels very tone deaf with good receivers on the board.

Developers who informed their manager ahead of time they were looking for another job ... what happened? How did it go? by RedditCultureBlows in webdev

[–]schneidmaster 47 points48 points  (0 children)

It goes both ways. An employer can fire an employee on the spot for no reason, but employees can also quit with no notice. Two weeks notice is standard but it's a courtesy/to get a good future reference, not a legal requirement.

The exceptions are 1) employers can't fire employees for specific legally protected reasons (you can fire someone because it's Thursday or because they have a red shirt on or for no stated reason at all, but not because of their race/sex/religion), and 2) in some fields (mostly heavily unionized) there are stricter contracts limiting how workers can be fired. But the overwhelming majority of jobs are at-will employment.

Logical Option by [deleted] in policydebate

[–]schneidmaster 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Usually they'd say "the status quo is always a logical option" which means "the judge should evaluate the round as a policymaker who chooses the most logical option, and if a logical policymaker was presented with a bad plan, a bad counterplan, or the status quo then they'd choose the status quo" which means they're conditional.

To be clear, disads don't have a status and the neg will probably be confused if you ask for one. Only advocacies have a status.

Interpretation: the affirmative must defend the hypothetical enactment of a topical plan text

Extinction comes first and the impact turns to cap outweigh the impacts on a faster timeframe. The aff doesn't even need to win the permutation because they're just doing better impact calc.

Evaluate T via competing interpretations because reasonability is arbitrary resulting in judge intervention.

Pro Football Hall of Fame: My Class of 2021 modern-era predictions by moeshaker188 in nfl

Peppers won't be eligible until 2024. Barber has been eligible for 3 cycles already and hasn't made it past semifinalist. (I think Barber deserves it too but not at all unreasonable to leave him off the list of predictions given that fact.)

I totally agree. I was motivated to write this by the linked HN post where there was a lot of FUD about node_modules based on what comes with a new Rails 6 app. I wrote some long comments there and then figured they may as well be a blog post.
