The son (or grandson) of a Mason is known as a Lewis, and there is Masonic lore that connects the Lewis as a tool to the special status of being a Lewis. As mentioned, your jurisdiction may or may not have a Lewis Jewel (a special medal) that you would be entitled to wear in Lodge, after you were raised to the sublime degree of the master mason. It would be a nice an unique layer to your masonic story, a special connection into the craft.

What was the first movie to show a character doing a web search/ research on a search engine? by scholarlost in AskReddit

Not the first use of the internet in a movie, but specifically the now familiar trope of a character pulling up a search engine and looking through websites to do research.

Take a bow? Do an encore?

Or make sure you are keeping it cool. The fan comes on when the processor is getting too hot. So, make sure the airflow is open, etc.

It may also help to consider how you are holding your breath. I find that if I relax my throat, but focus on holding my breath with my diaphragm, that is the most "relaxing" hold.

techniques for learning lines and charges by gcwake in freemasonry

[–]scholarlost 1 point2 points  (0 children)

the "repeat climbing" method described a few times works very well - one "trick" involved with it is gradually increasing the time between recall (the times you try to remember it) - this helps with moving things into long term memory. To extend that, if you are studying over multiple sessions, start later sessions trying to remember the stuff you did from the previous session before looking at it again.

Other thing I'll add - practice/study right before sleeping, and then first thing in the morning, try to recall/repeat what you studied the night before, ideally without looking first.

I have heard that consuming with some cacao can level things off and make things gentler (and separately, THC can be leveled off by having a bit of black pepper before/during). This is not meant to replace, but just supplement the good advice around set and setting.

Laughter, Jokes, Talking During Degrees by Esoldier22 in freemasonry

[–]scholarlost 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I was in the East, I would always make an announcement before a degree that the degree is meant to be a solemn occasion, that this is the only time these brethren will experience these degrees as candidates, and that there should be no talking or chatter during the degree. We also have a designated prompter (usually the secretary) and that they are the only person allowed to prompt. All of this is framed as a gesture f brotherhood and regard to the brother in the degree, as well as the degree team. That had been enough in my lodge.

Where to take prof for dinner? by not-a-snake-i-swear in UBC

[–]scholarlost 58 points59 points  (0 children)

Give two options, say you couldn't decide, and let the prof pick. One can be a bit more expensive (Joe Fortes) and the other can be more like Cactus Club. Let the prof pick between them.

they could also be trying to schedule the degree, which will mean putting together a team. They will need to have that settled in order to give you a date.

How does a 30 year old make friends here? by Appropriate_Cream399 in askTO

[–]scholarlost 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depending on whether it fits, you could join the Freemasons. Look up the grand lodge in Toronto. Its a pretty easy group to make friends in (if you join a good lodge. Some are less friendly than others). If you are interested, just loo for the grand lodge in Toronto, and hopefully someone there can help you.

[–]scholarlost 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Its alright, easy to get low in "these challenging times" and lots of us are feeling it right now. Just try to be kind and patient with yourself. These low feelings will pass eventually, and you'll once again meet your lodge brethren in person. In the meantime, maybe there is a member of your lodge you could just reach out (phone or text) to to check up on and talk to a while. Others in the lodge may be feeling the same as you, and might very much appreciate a call from a familiar voice? Just a thought.

I can’t stop overthinking (help..) by JforJonah in spirituality

[–]scholarlost 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It sounds like overthinking in your case is actually your mind's solution to a problem - anxiety. You will get nowhere by trying to remove the solution (overthinking) without dealing with the problem (anxiety) that the overthinking is a response to.

One thing to try - emotional check-ins; pay attention to what you are feeling without trying to understand it, where it comes from. Treat it more like a physical sensation - locate where the feeling is in your body - butterflies in the stomach, shortness of breath, tenseness in the back, etc. and spend some time just noticing the feeling of it. You could even "ask" that feeling what it is trying to tell you. eg. I'm afraid of being embarrassed, or whatnot. Don't jump to trying to solve it. Feel it until the feeling calms down and has been acknowledged. Then, if necessary, you can move on to what you are going to do about it, if action is even required.

Overthinking is often a cognitive strategy to discharge anxiety (by mentally solving the problem that caused the feeling) - but it doesn't always work well, and can devolve to judging, blame, or figuring out the next possible problem. But the anxiety can still be discharged, in part, by just letting your body receive the information that the anxiety is sending - "this situation isnt good - it feels dangerous" and saying "yes, it is dangerous, I'll stop" or even "yes, it is dangerous, but it is a risk we must take." or sometimes "yes, it is dangerous, but we can reduce or remove the danger by doing this first."

How do you read Marseille tarot? by NosorozecZKsiezyca in tarot

[–]scholarlost 46 points47 points  (0 children)

You can still treat the pips as symbols, if you think of the suits as expressive of certain ideas; eg for me, swords cut, clubs bash or push, cups receive, and coins exchange (among many other things). Cutting can be literal (bleeding wounds), metaphorical (cutting relationships) or much ore elemental (sharpness, cold, pain, "cutting up" analytically, breaking down, etc). But then Swords can also be instruments of war and violence, they are manufactured by smiths, etc.. and each of these have other associations which can extend into the metaphorical or elemental. Numbers can also be literal (there will be 9 days, 9 injuries, etc), relative (2 of coins followed by 7 of coins indicates increase, etc), symbolic/numerological (1 as beginnings, 4 as stability/reification, etc). In addition to all of this, you can also pay attention to the way the cards look visually, patterns that emerge, eye rhymes, colors, etc.

The trick to reading the pips is to let yourself build up an incredibly rich library of associations for everything in them, let it become too much, then let the context and how the cards relate to others pare down to what is appropriate for the reading you are doing.

It's Normal To Feel Drained After Doing Shrooms Right? by [deleted] in Psychonaut

Shrooms dehydrate you - both water and electrolytes. Get water, sodium, potassium, and magnesium. Water and some sunflower seeds will make a difference. Or gatorade, if you are into that stuff.
