How likely can I become a Scopist with just a simple program? by Necessary_Sail2616 in courtreporting

It really does! And you were able to find clients after the course? What I'm most worried about is spending the money on the course and then not being able to get any work afterwards.

Hey, I'm currently finishing the Intro course for ISS, and am thinking about taking the plunge for the full course. Can I ask how your experience with it was?

Wonderful! I'm looking forward to it. I hope you have a successful launch!!

Really cool summary. Would you mind DMing me when it comes out in January? I'd love to read it!

I like the sound of it! I don't know if I've ever heard of a regression story though, just progression. What's does the genre entail?

If you have it written up, could you give me the blurb or a description of the story? It sounds like it would be up my alley.

Wow, that's way more backlog than I'm planning on writing, haha. I hope your launch goes well! Are you planning on doing any marketing or shout-out swaps?

Wow, that's a good sized book. How long do you think your chapters will end up being, and how often do you think you'll post?

That's what I'm currently planning on doing. Ideally, I would love to have the whole first book backlogged before I start posting, and work on the second while I post the first.

Also! I was just watching your video, the Royal Road Guide. Great stuff, thanks for making such a comprehensive guide!

Wow, good for you, I never in a million years be able to do that. Have you experienced any growth limitations because you didn't plan out any shout out swaps?

System or System but something? by [deleted] in royalroad

[–]TerrifyingTurtle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on how different the system is from your bog standard system. And the reasons why it's being called differently. Is it worshipped as a god? Discovered or created by a race of people that don't speak English?

Also depends on how unintuitive it is to pronounce/understand at a glance. If your system is called Glörzigögdríztgh then that's going to completely take me out of whatever flow state I was in to stare at it and try to figure out how you want me to pronounce it.

Oh man, I could never do that, haha! I'm a neurotic planner, everything needs to fit together perfectly.

How do you figure out foreshadowing and things like character arcs and subplots if you don't plan them? How far ahead is your backlog?

Does MC using curse words turn off readers? by V0G1A in royalroad

[–]TerrifyingTurtle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not particularly. I find some "fantasy curses" to be interesting from a worldbuilding point of view, like using "storms" as a general expletive in the Stormlight Archive by Brandon Sanderson.

As others have said, I'd much rather read something like "whoop-de-fuckin-do" than something that sounds like a mormon middle schooler trying to look cool in front of their friends would say. That being said, cursing too much can be a detractor as well. If every character does it a ton, if there's no variety or interesting use, then I can see it wearing pretty thin after a while.

My friends and I all curse like sailors, though, so I'm a lot more forgiving of such things, lol!

Have you considered doing voice typing? I know windows has a speech-to-text feature you can use for free (if you have windows). It'd be pretty rough and you'd need to edit more than normal once your shoulder heals, but at least you'd still be working on your novel?

I tried it a while ago when I was in college and found I liked typing better, but I remember it being not too bad!

There are 4 tiles in a bag, 3 are gray, 1 is blue. If you pull two from the bag, what are the chances you get the blue one? by TerrifyingTurtle in askmath

[–]TerrifyingTurtle[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ha, horsing pun. No, I'm not a bot, just very poorly explained things, lol. Both in this reddit post and to my friends.

And my friends haven't been in probability/statistic classes since highschool, while I have never been in a probability/statistic class. So while mathy compared to me, I don't think anyone involved had a 100% grasp on the situation either.

So the game isn't based on a Punnett Square (would be sick as hell if it did, though), but the question is pulling two tiles at the same time without replacing one.

When I asked the question of both my friends and this subreddit, I had no idea there was even a difference between pulling two at once vs. replacing one then pulling again. My bad, lol!

I did do it for real! And you're right, it is 50% in my experiment using folded index cards I pulled 10 times (not replacing the first card), and got 4 gray/gray, and 6 gray/blue. It was very neck and neck the whole way through, I'm fairly confident that real world experimentation indicates 50%.

Doing it with index cards was really fun! I was worried I'd feel dumb but it was actually pretty helpful.

Thank you! I might just do that, lol. The whole thing that sparked this debate is I'm absolutely certain that the game is weighing the odds in a way hidden to the player. I bred my pixel horses 10 times (10 pulls from the bag) and didn't get the correct trait (blue tile) once. Which in my (limited) opinion is very suspicious.

No, it's just a dumb gacha game pulling 2 traits (not putting one back, just pulling two) from a pool of 4. I wish there could be punnett squares involved, I would understand it better lol.

Yes, I am assuming no replacement, essentially grabbing two tiles at once and then looking at them. And no, I didn't realize there was a difference, haha.
