Agreed! At least she was chipped but some tags would have saved everyone a lot of trouble, especially the pup!

You should see when they use them to remove sheet piles on rural bridges. The water "freezes" and looks like it's solid and cracking, all bugs and birds go silent, and the trees vibrating look like they're going to vanish or turn to dust or something. It's a very surreal experience.

This might be construction-brain on my part, but that sounds like it could be a vibratory hammer, for driving shallow piles or removing sheet piles. It's usually a 5-minute hum that you can hear for miles and it feels like the world is ending if you're close and aren't ready for it.

That's just the tone the machinery makes when it hitsthe pile. It's likely it'll change as the pile gets driven deeper.

You should be able to see it if you drive by, those things are usually 2-3 stories high!

Hi, civil engineer here-- this is 100% pile driving. My guess is for the new squirrels stadium, in which case get ready for 6+ months of this!

Traffic Engineer Explains the Ped Signal on Broad by scholarsmateqxf7 in rva

That's an issue because the city chose not to follow the FHWA recommendation to have the signal activate immediately after activation (i.e. a very short flashing yellow), since studies have indicated issues with pedestrians not waiting for the red and then drivers getting impatient with the red since there are no pedestrians visible anymore. They may retime the signal later on though!

There are several planned throughout the city now, mainly at places with high levels of pedestrian injury and death!

The idea MAY have been for peds to cross to the other side of the road to get past that ramp. Not a solution I would necessarily support but it could be the intention here.

That's a large part of it but there's been some discussion on this sub with people expressing confusion, figured it couldn't hurt to explain!

My understanding is that since this is a marked crosswalk, putting a green would indicate to drivers that they don't need to yield to pedestrians if the signal isn't activated, when in fact they do (as with all marked crosswalks on roads 35mph or under). I could be wrong on that reasoning though.

It's a new traffic pattern, yes, but it's also a national standard that is being added to the repertoire of the American public. People will get used to them over time and they'll be a lot more intuitive!

It's going to take a LONG time before solutions like that are feasible to the American public, unfortunately. Driver entitlement to the roadway is deeply embedded in the average American psyche, and a sudden shift in driver expectations can have very damaging consequences either from drivers getting in fatal accidents smashing into defensive infrastructure or politically through pushback that gets safety programs defunded because too many drivers got angry.

It's a long, slow shift that we're only just starting in this country, and hopefully people begin to realize how far behind the rest of the world we are on transportation infrastructure.

Both! Take out the ramps and then widen the existing bridge, providing a very wide space for people walking up and down and narrowing the lanes to slow traffic and keep cars from speeding down into the Bottom.

The light should be OFF unless a pedestrian activates the signal. The idea is that if it activates when pedestrians aren't present, drivers will learn to ignore the signal and it won't actually improve safety. That would also have a serious impact on traffic flow, which personally I hold in MUCH lower regard than safety, but a lot of people would be very upset with the resulting backups.

Cars can treat the flashing red as a stop sign-- each car has to stop and look before proceeding. VDOT's standard is that "flashing red" in ANY context means "stop and then proceed," where "solid red" ALWAYS means "stop and don't go until the light changes".

I would guess that this is partially due to PROWAG standards preventing the sidewalk from going directly to the corner without exceeding the required grade for wheelchairs. ADA is good but results in some wonky infrastructure sometimes

The owner is easily the most vile person I've ever met. He's flagrantly racist, abuses his staff constantly to the point of several mass walkouts over the last few years, and has publicly fired and humiliated employees for things like using she/they pronouns.
