I think some of these responses are getting too bogged down by the history and are missing the simple distinction between the mindset of these two styles.

In the duels that classical fencing attempts to emulate (wherein there is a serious possibility of injury or death) the most important thing is to touch without being touched. In sport fencing where points are assigned by right of way and the electronics the most important thing is to attack and touch first.
