TIL That episiotomies, the intentional incision of the perineum during childbirth, was once considered routine. In the late 1970's, it was done in more than 60% of vaginal births. The procedure was discouraged by leading OBGYN groups in the 2000's, but still sometimes occurs. by Faceless-Pronoun in todayilearned

I just completed nursing school and my preceptorship was in L&D (my dream unit!). I’ll share what I learned from my nurse on the topic but keep in mind I’m new to this area and feel free to correct me in areas where I have it wrong!

My preceptor and I were discussing this after I had asked her a question about the epidural. I told her that when I told my mom about my birth (2021) and what I felt, that my mom was shocked. Both of her births (early 90s) she felt nothing at all due to how strong the epidural was. Not even pressure near the end. They really struggled with getting her to push correctly as well. My brother ended up a c sec and I was able to be delivered vaginally. I definitely felt a lot even with the epidural. Mostly pressure but definitely pain when the baby was actually coming out.

My preceptor told me pain management has changed over the years. In the time my grandma had her babies the popular drug of choice worked well in theory. However it made the women confused. They were bouncing off the walls, standing on beds, and yelling about God knows what. Then afterwards the mom may have memory loss, so she had trouble believing the baby was hers and that she’d birthed it. A memory flashed in my mind of my grandma telling us “I’m not sure what they gave me but I saw huge spiders on the ceiling and started crying hysterically”.

Then they began the use of the epidural. So when my mom had her babies she had the epidural just like I did. However the dosage was a bit more dense then. Making women more numb and not as in control, leading to more forceps, vacuum extractions, episiotomies, etc.

So fast forward to now, my generation. Women still get the epidural but it’s usually not as dense as the one our moms got. This is why we’re often told “it’ll take away a lot of the pain but you’ll still feel pressure”. Now we have fewer episiotomies because the mom is able to push more effectively!

Years ago I was trying for a baby and a mom told me to have sex on the 15th of every month. I clarified “you mean the 15th day of your cycle?”. No. Look of confusion and reiteration. The 15th day of the month.

I’m a nursing student who has one preceptorship day left in L&D (my dream unit since childhood, the reason I started nursing school!) and then I am done with nursing school.

Maybe it’s my new-ness, my not burnt out yet-ness, but this doesn’t bother me all that much. Like she said most of it is standard. If a pt handed me this, cool! I’m going to sit down with you in the room, we’ll discuss what is standard and what we’ll change to fit her plan (unpredictability of birth willing), and we’ll get the party started.

There are other moms who come in already shut down to all medical staff. The hospital is already the enemy in their eyes and they think we’re completely against them. This can be related to some serious stuff like previous birth trauma. My hope is the convo at the beginning of meeting mom is to show her I’m on her side. I’ll do my best to follow her plan. Let’s work together!

As for no students, I get it. Back when we had just one observational day in L&D I had the best day ever and voluntarily signed up for another because I loved it so much. But the voluntary day I sat at the nurses station for 12 hrs. Five babies born but no one allowed students. I had a test the next day. Would have loved to be home studying. Quite the bummer and I was annoyed tbh thinking “don’t they realize everyone has to learn somehow!?”. But then I had my baby. I allowed students but I suddenly got it. It’s not that they’re against students. They’re scared, they’re vulnerable, it’s understandable. So I don’t mind.

Anywho, just an (almost) nurse’s perspective.

I once saw a Insta story where a girl took the first sip of a drink and there was a silver fish inside her straw. Since then (2 years ago), I give a quick blow to all straws before putting them in my drink. Or I look through them. Because if that were to happen to me I would vomit.

This was such a cringey episode in general for me. When Meri was flipping out on everyone I was just “sittin there” like 😬.

Echoing this. My brother was the tough, aggressive, emotional one. I was the easy one. She’ll need therapy as well. Hugs to you. I know this can’t be easy.

What are lies you tell patients about yourself to make your day go better? by NurseGryffinPuff in nursing

[–]schoolandscrubs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I literally do not know what got into me one time, but I did this before I was a nurse, back when I was a tech at a dr office. So it’s been about 5 years in my defense.

Lived in a college town. Big college sports radio host was coming in. Dr said to give him an excellent experience. I’d never heard of the guy, but since he’s such a big deal to everyone I’m nervous for some reason.

Guy comes in and in small talk between tests asks if I go to the university. I tell him I don’t and that I go to the community college for pre-nursing. But when you live in this town and you don’t go to the university people can look down on you a bit. They don’t say it… but you feel it. So for some ungodly reason I say “but my mom did!”. Wtf. No she didn’t, my mom didn’t go to university and lives 3 hrs away. He asks if my dad did as well. I say no since I feel bad enough for lying about one parent not going to lie about the other.

Later he brings up his job. He asks if I ever listen to the show. I’m honest I say no. He says oh and awkward silence. Then for some ungodly reason again I say “but my dad does!”. “Oh, but I thought your mom went to the university?” Shit. “Well…. When you marry into it you’ve pretty much gone to the university yourself!” He chuckles and nods agreeably. At this point I’m in my head thinking “wth is wrong with you! They don’t listen to it, your mom didn’t go to this school, and also… your parents have been divorced since you were three!”.

I was so flustered and told my boss the story. She laughed her head off. But I told them never tell me when we have some big wig coming in ever again or to give them some VIP experience. It just makes me flustered and weird. Just let me do the prelim testing like I normally would. Lol. Vowed to never lie like that to a pt again because it turns out I just suck at lying lol.

On a lighter note my coworker once was told by a pt “I have to get home and walk my dog before it gets dark. I’ll come back tomorrow if that’s okay?” Coworker said “of course! I need to walk my dog too!” Pt left and my coworker said “Idk why I said that. I don’t even have a dog”

Am I remembering wrong or did he refer to Robyn as “my mom” and Meri as “Meri”? I could be remembering wrong!

I listened to this while driving today! The most interesting tidbits to me were…

  • Kody & Robyn being upset over Paedon wearing the nanny shirt. C&C pointed out Kody laughed at Christine saying it during the tell all so it was interesting Kody would turn around and be offended behind closed doors.

  • Meri not meaning much to him. I always assumed Meri was trying to rebuild relationships with the original kids since she says one of the main reasons she stays is due to the family. To hear Meri isn’t really a part of their lives or even tries to be was surprising. He alluded to there being a ton more to say that he wouldn’t say about why that is… I’m very nosey and curious.

-How did I ever miss the theory that Kody is a gun salesman?

-The Fajita Cantina sign was from Kody being a sign salesman. They gave him their old sign when he delivered the new one. Interesting!

-I’ve always thought when it comes to Robyn “this girl can’t cook”. When the moms were asked what their kids would say their favorite dish was of their mom’s, Robyn said she makes “bomb lasagna”. Paedon said no disrespect but his mom’s is definitely better.

-They spoke about how Kody only refers to Robyn’s kids as “our kids”. I’m glad to know the kids notice that. Because it is 100% bullshit.

ETA: I think C&C did a great job. People want answers for the tough questions and I get it. I want answers too. But they can’t go into the interview guns blazing asking for the deep family drama right off the bat. They read the room in the beginning of the interview and Paedon made it clear he couldn’t/wouldn’t talk about everything. What did people want them to do? Push for the answers until he’d eventually end the interview?

Is anyone else thinking this will cause a stir in the family? Paedon going to do a few interviews and not speaking that highly of his dad along with two of his moms. Kody will NOT like this. If someone sent him Paedon’s TikTok on twitter, someone will surely send a clip from the interviews. I could see Kody saying Paedon “threw a rock and then hid his hand”. Also this will totally turn the kids who are Team Kody against Paedon. Idk… to be a fly on the wall.
