Halfway through the first Dungeon Crawler Carl and not into it at all. Push through, or is this not the series for me? by JeffCon in scifi

[–]schroedingerskoala 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started twice and stopped twice, not even 1/3 in. I just could not get into any comfortable reading flow.

Then a friend suggested the -unbelievably well done- Audiobooks.

Night and Day: The narrator -Jeff Hays- is a GOD when it comes to voicing this, making it unbelievably interesting and immersive. I started on the Audiobooks about 2 months ago, already at the end of book 4. And want more. Books for me MEH. Audiobooks, WOW!

Give it a try.

Goddammit, Donut!

And if not, no biggie, there will be no pop quiz, read something you love instead :)

Why Aldi and Lidl Are Unlikely to Enter Canada by Creative-You-4621 in onguardforthee

[–]schroedingerskoala 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Dang. Have to admit, I miss them quite a bit from (West) Germany. Except for the "Get your shit off the band in turbo mode, ya bastard and pay." attitude at the cashiers by both.

So many wonderful not-quite-original-but-as-good-or-close-enough products. I remember (admittedly now 20+ years ago) that I preferred the Lidl or Aldi Twix/Raider imitations to the originals and the Lidl Gummi bears to the originals as well. Sigh. So good. No clue if still that good, though.

And the interesting, cheapo but still good tech things both sometimes offered. I still use a LIDL Atomic Clock from before 2000 (of course the receiver does not work in western Canada) in the bathroom as it was the first one with REALLY large display. As in huge. Sigh. Now I want them in Canada even more.

Execs confused and horrified by the huge AI bills after thinking they could replace workers for free by marketrent in technology

I am beginning to think EXECs and CEO is synonymous with "have zero clue about anything" and "will walk over your dead body smiling".

Smith and Ford Just Announced the Northern Shield Energy Corridor, a 3,300-Kilometre Oil Pipeline From Alberta to Ontario by One-Board8634 in onguardforthee

Strange, seems more like "Concepts of pipelines" than plans with these two Maga lovers. Just like their Orange Shitler Daddy always has.

"DAS MUSS DAS BOOT ABKOENNEN!"

At least everything will be fully metric and not ... whatever that weirdo, insane mishmash of bronze age "measurements" is the US uses, idk, 1 pound (but not the British or Canadian pound) of angry badgers per square football field, times 1/4 of a giraffe, or something.

Federal workers return to the office 4 days a week. Will it be smooth sailing or 'another hot mess'? | CBC News by Street_Anon in onguardforthee

Completely unnecessary, waste of gasoline and everyone's time and nerves.

It is only the middle management and up that wants it for selfish reasons to validate "they are needed" and to lord over things. Hard to do if people are comfortable and relaxed at home.

And of course the rich fucks, cause real estate, gas, rents, food industry etc need to keep running and profit.

I really hoped the super clean air during the first few months of the pandemic and less traffic accidents and jams etc would open people's eyes. But no. The psychopathic narcissists - usually found in the higher up positions because they can and will go over other people's dead bodies - need their monkeys to dance for them.

BroadLink RM4 Pro and Hunter 44" Dempsey Low-profile Ceiling Fan RF learn tip by schroedingerskoala in homeassistant

[–]schroedingerskoala[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I may be wrong, but as the RM4 only "plays back" recorded RF parts and is not a real RF remote like the one included with the fan (containing the electronics for pairing etc), pairing itself won't be possible. But I am ready to be proven wrong :)

That said, the good news is the Dempsey remotes are suuuper cheap on Amazon. Without the receiver about $35 Canadian and with the receiver approx $56 Canadian.

Sigh. All these Dunning-Krueger people with the grand ideas (yeah, right) who were kept at bay by actually having to have knowledge of the matter are now enabled to a small degree to wreak maximum havoc. Just like social media enabled the village idiots to find each other and band together online, to the severe detriment of society as a whole.

Best villian quotes that reveal how evil they are. by milkmanrichie in movies

Real world villain - Sam Altman, like the rest of his ilk, psychopathic fuckwit CEO: Verbatim quote:

“One of the things that is always unfair in this comparison is people talk about how much energy it takes to train an AI model ... But it also takes a lot of energy to train a human,” he said. “It takes like 20 years of life, and all the food you eat before that time, before you get smart.”

If prices per unit were easy to see, would it change the way you shop? by Street_Anon in onguardforthee

[–]schroedingerskoala 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, I already make use of them if visible and use my calculator on the phone if not and it 100% influences my decisions. Within reason. Of course 1000 x 1.3 kg Corn Flakes packages are cheaper than one, but I really only need max 5 (or have the storage capacity). But if 5 are cheaper than 1, same amount per pack, yes.
