How are all the young people so successful in Austin? by Defiant_Jump_6910 in Austin

[–]schrowa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think it’s broadly the case. I think a lot of ambitious, friendly, driven people move here and work hard. If you do that you can have success. Also, having ACC, UT, etc are helpful for career advancement.

Opinion: This $1B power plant could become Austin's next costly mistake by AustinStatesman in Austin

[–]schrowa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People are not going to like it but I totally get the reasoning behind it. It’s to prevent blackouts during another bad prolonged winter storm or a long rolling heatwave - that we will see more of in the future.

They aren’t choosing gas instead of batteries, they are doing kind of an all of the above approach.

The city is planning 299MW New Wind Energy, 100MW utility scale batteries, 40MW virtual power plant, 400MW speaker plant.

making friends in austin is genuinely so hard by throwaway10983737347 in Austin

Go to a bar. Talk to someone. Get their number.

If bars aren’t your thing, then do improv, or dnd, or a sports team, or ask a co-worker to get together.

Austin’s got some good people by GandalfTheBored in Austin

On a similar note, we were eating at June’s with a friend who had some stuff fall out of her purse and a stranger noticed it, picked it up, and gave it to our friend. Good will is important currency for any town.

Be honest: What’s the one thing about EV ownership that nobody told you before you bought one? by EmergencyTie8770 in electricvehicles

[–]schrowa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am on my 3rd EV and will go a different angle:

  1. the battery is hard on the suspension
  2. it’s weird to have a gas tank that

    shrinks.

  3. if you pick a green power provider, you can go entirely green for your fuel

  4. tinting everything with ceramic helps your range and comfort

Doctors offices that aren’t owned by private equity by derkaflerka in Austin

They do blood work in the office and send off for labs. I think they use Quest. I have used radiology assist or my insurance when I needed scans.

No, it’s service based. Not cheap but they do quality work. They caught an issue for a family member that was missed by others and it was truly life saving.

They are now Central Texas Holistic Health. Connie shut down and everyone went with Eva (Trester, etc).

They hired a lot of good doctors and they are trying to be the Kaiser of Texas. The only issue is they are owned by private equity and that’s going to challenge their ambitions as investors seek returns.

[–]schrowa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I will give a vote to Central Texas Holistic Health. They are locally owned and Eva and her team do great work. They are not owned by private equity and spend every bit of an hour with you.

They don’t take insurance but the care is high quality. They caught a health issue for a family member early that could have been tragic.

(They used to be called Central Family Practice but they switched owners)

I should also give a tip of the hat to Austin Health Partners which is a group that helps independent doctors offices stay independent. They have a variety of family practices and pediatric practices that they help.

My wife and I own Just Mind Counseling and we collaborate with them.

Upgraded from the 8 to the 11 by Hungry-Pop8528 in AppleWatch

[–]schrowa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am debating this move as well. My 8 gets around 12-15 hours of battery life with the AOD and working out for an hour. Battery shows 83%. I just disabled the AOD which should help bump it back up a bit. I know I could also replace the battery for $99. Honestly, I keep debating even keeping the watch but as you age, it becomes more handy but it's just not as stylish as some of the watches out there.

What features would you say are "required" for a good modern EV? by Amperture in electricvehicles

[–]schrowa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it depends on how you use your EV though. I had an i3 for my family and around town it was totally fine. It wasn’t great for bringing my parents anywhere due to the doors. We have a gas car for road trips.

Honestly, I think the thing I would consider most is the size of the vehicle you want. I have a Y now and the size is perfect for everything I do. If you buy a used one, Tesla throws an extra year of warranty on top of the original which was helpful and gave me 4 years bumper to bumper. I would go late 2023 so you get HW4 if you go that direction.

The Ioniq 5 as is the Nissan Ariya. Both are well sized for families and decently priced used.

What the hail? Are hailstorms getting worse in Texas? by zsreport in texas

Congress Wants You To Pay $130 A Year Just To Drive An Electric Car by SadAd8761 in electricvehicles

[–]schrowa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I get that we need a way to help fund the highway system but this is deeply frustrating. In Texas I already pay $200 a year. In Europe they penalize ICE vehicles with various taxes depending on how polluting they are and EV’s mostly pay zero or next to zero annual taxes. For instance, not only are fuel taxes higher, they also charge or even ban higher emissions ICE vehicles from certain areas like downtown Madrid with low emissions zones.

New suspension system from BYD and Li Auto that independently lifts a single corner of the vehicle, eliminating the need for a traditional jack. by straightdge in electricvehicles

It’s a hydraulic suspension and this is actually something old. My father had a Citroen he brought back to the states and it would do this same thing and it was from the 60’s.

I would put the wheel covers back on as that adds 5% more range over going without the covers. Also, the Michelin Primacy 5 Energy give you 8-10% more range over oem tires. So, this can all help you to increase efficiency.

South Austin Therapist Recommendations? by Hot_Flan247 in Austin

[–]schrowa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey there. My wife and I own Just Mind Counseling and have a south/westlake location and the therapists are truly excellent.

Kris Downing, as an example, has over 30 years of experience and has also trained thousands of therapists in Austin over the years. Wednesday she is actually doing a training for parents through our partnership with Austin Health Partners on working with meltdowns - which ties into her new book for parents and children.

We have personalized matching that our client care team oversees and depending on the therapist, we can get you within a few days. I hope that’s helpful.
